German Architecture in China: Architectural Transfer - Softcover

This publication presents the 100 most important german buildings constructed in China at the turn of the 20th century. Rare historical illustrations of the buildings are shown side by side coulour photographs of the buildings as they stand today. The book is divided according to cities in which the German buildings are located: eg. Beijing, Tianjin, Beidaihe, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Wuhan, Shandong Province and Qingdao. Discussions on the major cities themselves, such as Shanghai and Beijing are included and among the specific architectural structures in the book are the following: Qianmen City Gate in Beijing which was converted into a building for exhibitions by the architect Curt Rothkegel; the former residence of the German Governor in Qingdao built in 1905-1907; residential housing near the Yan'an Yilu in East Qingdao which was designed by Chinese architects in a sort of "Neocolonial style", which for China is unique and can only be found in th city of Qingdao. Finally, the volume indicates the exact addresses and position of buildings in city plans and therefore presents a guide to this particular architectural phenomenon within a broader context. The author, Torsten Warner, is himself an architect and has lived and studied for several years in China. The book is based on research in Chinese and German archives and therefore offers a historical perspective.
