Superbly illustrated by the eminent, celebrated & prolific woodblock artist KATSUSHIKA HOKUSAI Taito [1760-1849]. . "TAITO" was one of Hokusai's "Go" [studio] names, used 1811-1820. See Lane & Roberts below. . On the last page is the colophon, with the artist's signature reading: "Taito Sensei Ga Zu" or "Master Taito's Illustrated Pictures." . Encyclopedic in coverage, this book was profusely illustrated with over 400 individual sketches and drawings, covering all aspects of Edo period Japanese life, life style, articles of daily usage, clothing: Kimono, clothing boxes Hakama, architecture, sword-making, military weapons, armor, archery, Kendo practice, Samurai battles, textile weaving, landscape, all forms of edibles: fruit, greens, giant Daikon, monkeys, foxes, fish, shell fish, animals & birds of all varieties, cormorant [fishing] birds, Buddhist deities, courtiers, Samurai, merchants, farmers, commoners, men, women, children, road trips shanks mare, lacquer ware, Mt. Hokusai had no concern for the book content, he simply went wild drawing and sketching things of common usage and examples of everything he saw around him. The work is more of a reflection of Edo period culture than the laws of family, per the title. The work is similar to the famous "Hokusai Manga" showing similar subjects. . *** WOODBLOCK PRINTED: The work is entirely hand printed from woodblocks, on handmade Washi paper from mulberry fibers. . *** AUTHOR: GENYE Hoohshi [ -1350]: The FIRST EDITION was titled: TEIKIN WORAI [OHRAI]: . The original edition was written by Genye. . "GENYE.was a Buddhist priest, of the Tendai sect. The purpose of this book was to show the models for letter writing, commonly used in the Ashikaga period, but as these letters give useful words, and acknowledge of things necessary for cultured people, the book was used as a text book for Terakoya schools in the Tokugawa period. Consequently there were many popular illustrated editions of the book, of which this is an example. The illustrations in this publication have no direct relationship to the letters, only suggesting some points mentioned in the writings."
