Beschreibung
Oblong small quarto photo album measuring 9 ¾" x 7 ¾". Cloth covered stiff paper boards over a leather spine. Contains 158 gelatin silver photographs measuring from 3" x 2 ¼" to 5 1/2" x 3 1/2", nearly all with captions and/or dates. Binding heavily rubbed and bumped, the front and rear gutters reinforced with tape, missing a few photos, the photos are generally clean with the exception of a few, one page loose from binding, about very good overall. A photo album put together by D.S. Wallace, the inside front cover inscribed "D.S. Wallace, Album started About 1923, Birthday Present from Aunts at Twywell, Titles & Dates inserted August 1940." The album features photographs from South Africa, Namibia, Rhodesia, England, Switzerland, Portugal, and Ireland, with dates ranging from 1919 to 1940. The majority of the photos are from South Africa, with locations including Johannesburg, the Keiskama River, Witwatersrand, Zwartkops, Hartbeespoort, Rhenosterkop, Mitchell s Pass, Hogsback, the Bashee River, and more. Notable photos include a Hogsback village, Bashee River locals helping a ferry boat, a photo of a white woman with three villagers, captioned "At Masuie Camp Near Victoria Falls," a Rhodesian man standing next to a skinned crocodile, several fishing photos, a few photos of and around the Matterhorn in Switzerland, and a few photos of the cars they traveled in. Also notable is a 1921 group photo from King s College in London, as well as a 1926 or 27 group photo from "Maritzburg Workshops", both groups presumably including the author of the album, of which there are several portraits throughout. An interesting travel photo album containing lovely images from several countries, photographed and arranged on the eve of World War II. The photographs are consistently well-framed and exposed, surely the work of an experienced photographer. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 574404
