The highlight of this issue though is a long essay by Albert Camus on capital punishment. A close to near fine copy in wrappers illustrated with a Larry Rivers cover and with some very minor wear. Signed by LeRoi Jones as Amiri Baraka in 1997 at his appearance.

This collection of six short stories covers the whole variety of existentialism, or absurdism, as Camus himself insisted his philosophical ideas be called. The six works collected in this volume include: The Adulterous Woman, The Renegade of a Confused Spirit, The Silent Man, The Guest, Jonas or the Artist at Work, and The Growing Stone. The final story most clearly manifests Camus' existential ideals with a protagonist who actively shapes his life in spite of receiving a deep insight into the absurdity of the world, and acting morally nevertheless.

He published his own works of poetry, and in 1952 was awarded the Prix de la Mà diterranà e and in November the Mandat des Poà tes. In near fine condition. Camus separated his work into three cycles. Each cycle consisted of a novel, an essay, and a play. The first was the cycle of the absurd consisting of L'Ãtranger, Le Mythe de Sysiphe, and Caligula. The second was the cycle of the revolt which included La Peste (The Plague), L'Homme rà voltà (The Rebel), and Les Justes (The Just Assassins). The third, the cycle of the love, consisted of Nemesis. Each cycle was an examination of a theme with the use of a pagan myth and including biblical motifs. Camus began his work on the second cycle while he was in Algeria, in the last months of 1942, just as the Germans were reaching North Africa. Based on the true story of a group of Russian Socialist-Revolutionaries who assassinated the Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich, The Just Assassins explores the moral issues associated with murder and terrorism.

Written in 1948, The State of Siegeâ"the original sense is closer to state of emergencyâ"is a play in three acts presenting the arrival of plague, personified by a young opportunist, in sleepy Cadiz and the subsequent creation of a totalitarian regime through the manipulation of fear. In a piece written in 1948, in reply to criticisms from Gabriel Marcel, Camus defended his decision to set the play in Spain, and not in Eastern Europe, citing the ongoing oppression in Spain, France's collusion in it, and the Catholic Church's abandonment of Spanish Christians. The piece was first performed in October 1948, and was initially received poorly by critics and public, who had eagerly awaited the work, but expected a dramatization of Camus's novel The Plague. While the two share a common background, the treatments are entirely different in tone. The work has remained almost constantly in print in French, and since 1958 in an English translation by Stuart Gilbertâ"in Caligula and Three Other Playsâ"with a foreword by Camus.

The recipient, French philosopher and literary scholar Yvon Belaval, was a specialist in 18th century French philosopher Denis Diderot and edited an important edition of Diderot's works with fellow philosopher Jean Grenier, one of Camus' most influential mentors to whom he dedicated the present volume. Camus became a student of Grenier's in Algiers and was strongly influenced by his work Les Ãles, published in 1933. He dedicated his first book to Grenier: L'envers et l'endroit, published in Algeria by Edmond Charlot. L'homme rà voltà was also dedicated to Grenier, and Camus provided the preface to the second edition of Les Ãles in 1959. In near fine condition. A unique association copy. One of Camus' most important philosophical texts, The Rebel examines both the metaphysical and historical development of rebellion and revolution in societies, particularly in Western Europe. Examining both rebellion and revolt, which may be seen as the same phenomenon in personal and social frames, Camus examines several' countercultural' figures and movements from the history of Western thought and art, noting the importance of each in the overall development of revolutionary thought and philosophy.

First American edition of Camus' first novel and masterpiece. Octavo, original beige cloth. The recipient, Vincent Sheean was an American journalist and novelist. Sheean's most famous work was Personal History, which won one of the inaugural National Book Awards: the Most Distinguished Biography of 1935. Film producer Walter Wanger acquired the political memoir and made it the basis for his 1940 film production Foreign Correspondent, directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Sheean wrote the narration for the feature-length documentary Crisis (1939) directed by Alexander Hammid and Herbert Kline. He translated Ãve Curie's biography of her mother, Madame Curie (1939), into English. Sheean wrote Oscar Hammerstein I: Life and Exploits of an Impresario (1955) as well as a controversial biography of Dorothy Thompson and Sinclair Lewis, Dorothy and Red (1963). He studied at the University of Chicago, becoming part of a literary circle which included Glenway Wescott, Yvor Winters, Elizabeth Madox Roberts and Janet Lewis while he was there. With the publication of this first novel LâEtranger (The Stranger), Camus introduced his lifelong attempt to reconcile a philosophy of heroic nihilism with âthe ideal of human fraternityâ (Encyclopedia of Philosophy). It remains one of the classic works of the twentieth century.

Small chip at the spine crown, very good in printed wrappers and unprinted glassine dust jacket. One of 120 copies reserved for the use of the author of a total edition of 1343 copies. This is copy number 848 on Rives paper. The copies numbered between 801 to 920 were the author's copies. Inscribed by the author: "a Nicole, et Jean Marie/ avec la fidele affection/ de leur vieux camarade/ Albert Camus." ["To Nicole, and Jean Marie/ with the faithful affection/of their old comrade/ Albert Camus."]. The recipients were almost certainly Nicole and Jean-Marie Domenach, French intellectuals and friends of Camus, albeit with some philosophical differences. Jean-Marie was a noted left wing Catholic thinker, and while he and Camus were both vocal in protesting such activities as the French use of torture during the Algerian Civil War, Domenach had considerably more sympathy for the socialist and communist governments of the time, which Camus found repugnant. It is interesting to note the comma in the inscription, as though the inclusion of Jean-Marie in the presentation was an afterthought, or perhaps a necessity of politesse. Long after Camus had died, Jean-Marie Domenach provided a preface to a book of his thinking, *Albert Camus and Christianity. Hope on Trial.* The deluxe editions of this title turn up at auction with some regularity, but we were unable to find any instance of one of the author's copies in the market, and very few copies of this limited edition have ever turned up signed. A rarity, and a notable association copy.

Le premier s'ouvre sur une carte de visite contrecollée en tête du premier feuillet agrémentée de cette mention autographe d'Albert Camus : ''4 novembre 1951 / Albert Camus [imprimé] / vous remercie de tout coeur et vous / adresse ses très reconnaissantes pensées''.Les articles très remarqués que publie Camus dans le journal Combat - dont il deviendra le rédacteur en chef - sont rassemblés sous le titre d'Actuelles. Ils laissent poindre le danger de l'après guerre et mettent en garde contre toute tentation de laxisme, de retour au passé. En outre, Actuelles I contient un chapitre important intitulé Morale et Politique avec les onze éditoriaux qui le composent. Dans ces temps de guerre, dans un article daté du 12 octobre 1944, il reprend cette formule de Goethe qu'il avait déjà reprise en 1943 dans son étude sur le roman classique 'L'Intelligence et l'Échafaud': «Mieux vaut une injustice qu'un désordre.» Enfin, le recueil renferme également le célèbre éditorial du 8 août 1945 quand la bombe atomique vient d'exploser sur Hiroshima. Et ce jour-là, Camus n'hésite pas à écrire: «La civilisation mécanique vient de parvenir à son dernier degré de sauvagerie. Il va falloir choisir, dans un avenir plus ou moins proche, entre le suicide collectif ou l'utilisation intelligente des conquêtes scientifiques. En attendant, il est permis de penser qu'il y a quelque indécence à célébrer ainsi une découverte, qui se met d'abord au service de la plus formidable rage de destruction dont l'homme ait fait preuve depuis des siècles.» Le deuxième volume rassemble des textes écrits de 1948 à 1953 et se présente donc comme une suite chronologique d'Actuelles I avec un trait d'union, une continuité que constitue la série d'articles intitulée Ni victimes, ni bourreaux. Il est principalement centré sur les polémiques qui ont suivies la parution de L'Homme révolté. (Le chapitre intitulé Lettres sur la révolte qui occupe pratiquement la moitié du livre reprend les réponses de Camus aux attaques contre L'Homme révolté). L'ouvrage révèle un Camus mordant, le journaliste et l'homme engagé qui ne recule pas devant la polémique. Dos légèrement éclaircis. Discrets frottements affectant les nerfs du premier volume. Papier légèrement oxydé. Nonobstant, très belle condition.

Charlot, Paris, 1950. Un volume relié (16,5 x 25 cm) de 79 pages. Reliure signée J. Liekens, plein box violine, dos lise, titre doré en long, date en pied, toutes tranches dorées, double garde, contre plat en papier vernissé, couverture et dos conservés, sous étui bordé. Etui légèrement sali sinon superbe exemplaire en parfait état. Édition originale un des 800 exemplaires numérotés sur pur fil. Écrit en 1939, sa publication a été ajournée pour de multiples raisons. Après une préoriginale dans l'Arche, revue dirigée par Jean Amrouche, ami de l'auteur et collaborateur comme lui des Éditions Edmond Charlot, le texte est publié en volume deux ans plus tard avec d'infimes variantes. Cette année marque la fin de la célèbre maison d'édition algéroise : Edmond Charlot, découvreur de Camus dans les années trente, fait faillite malgré les succès de librairie qui caractérisent sa période d'après-guerre. Le Minotaure est l'un des derniers titres de son catalogue, en même temps qu'il marque la fin de la collaboration de Camus avec Charlot qui lancera une nouvelle maison d'édition à Alger, Rivages.
