Card with stamp and postmark. Of the two addresses in her letterhead, she has deleted the London one (105 Hallam Street, W1). In good condition, lightly aged and worn. Addressed to 'Secretary to | E. V. Knot [sic] Eq. | Offices of "Punch"'. The card reads: 'Miss de Casalis hopes to broadcast Mr. Knot's "Reparation" at the end of her turn on Friday 27th 9.35 to 10.15 (Forces programme) & again on Sunday to Forces abroad.'.

Aged and worn postcard. Written in pencil, and addressed to 'The Mac Finck | 21 Heatherfield Pk | Willesden Green | NW'. Reads 'All right Sunny | See you soon. So busy. No time to Finck of ennyfinck for a week | Yours | GRS'. The image of 'MR. GEORGE ROBERT SIMS' on the front of the card shows a seated Sims pondering what to write with pen in hand and finger on cheek, seated surrounded by curios in what is probably his study. Finck's 'In the Shadows' was one of the last songs played while RMS TItanic went down.

1p., 12mo. In good condition. He is writing 'as an old brother savage' (i.e. a member like Finck of the Savage Club), and asks her to accept his 'most sincere sympathy in the loss' of her husband, and his regret that he cannot be present at his funeral. Headed by Mrs Finck 'Answered'. Finck's 'In the Shadows' was one of the last songs played as RMS Titanic went down.

1p., 12mo. In fair condition, aged and lightly-creased. The letter begins: 'Four thousand thanks for the very kind manner in which you have given the notice of my dearest wife in your last number.' The notice will be extremely gratifying 'to her family and any of the many who loved her'. Mrs Planché was also a playwright, and is thought to have collaborated with her husband on a number of works.

2pp., 12mo. On bifolium. Fair, on lightly-aged paper, with strip of tape from previous mounting adhering at the foot of the recto of the second leaf. He asks her to send 'cards for your afternoon Friday' to 'our dear friends Mr. and Mrs. Koecher (and the Misses Koecher)', who would 'enjoy every minute'. He gives the Koecher's address as de Keyser's Royal Hotel, Blackfriars, and ends by conveying his wife's love.

2pp., 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged. The 'Gentlemen' are clearly the publishers of a book which they wish Bell to review. She writes that she is greatly obliged to them for offering her 'a copy of your beautiful book on Japan', and has written 'to 4 editors to ask for space for early notices of it'. The book is 'indeed a marvel of technical skill in reproduction & it would be a pleasure to me to speak as highly of it as it deserves'.

2pp., 12mo. Very good, on lightly-aged paper. 36 lines. Harewood explains that he 'originally asked Mrs Rankl to think of someone who had known her husband for, at any rate, a portion of his continental career who would be prepared to review his career before he came to this country, and also to give some idea of what he had achieved since arriving here [.] when the moment came she had to say that there appeared to be nobody who had known him abroad who had the necessary musical qualifications. When I saw her about 10 days ago I said I would find someone myself. [.] I do hope you do not think that we were simply putting out feelers and asking two people so as to make sure of getting one.'.

2pp., 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged. The letter is addressed to 'My poor dear', and he writes 'with deepest sympathy' with 'your terrible loss of dear Herman. I little thought that my last visit would be the last.' It is 'perhaps poor consolation' to her, but Finck's passing 'hits all his pals very hard indeed. For he was dearly loved by everybody.' He urges her to 'Be brave, my dear, & be sure we are all thinking of you in this awful time.' 'Ans:' (i.e. 'Answered') is written at the head. See Graves's entry in the Oxford DNB. Finck's 'In the Shadows' was one of the last pieces played by the orchestra on the Titanic.

Two pages, 8vo, very good condition, with a few holograph corrections. He thanks Lord Elibank for the loan of pamphlets, naming the one on Bismarck that he is returning. He agrees with most of what Elibank says about the Armada, finding the key question whether there was 'a strike of not'. He continues, "With regard to Lucy Walter. I have indeed read the late Lord George Scott's book and discovered the facts to which you refer. It seemed to me a delicate subject on which to write and this is the reason why I answered the question in such a general manner. For, were such a document found and if it still existed, it is difficult to imagine the constitutional issue that might result. Although on the strength of it, we are much better off having the House of Windsor, the first Duke of Monmouth did have great qualities and the present Buccleuch family are wonderful people [note by Elibank "They are. They are incidentally cousins of mine!"] | I would like to thank you again for writing to me in such a kind way. The more one reads history academically the more one comes up against rooted prejudice. This is one reason why I changed from history to law up here at Oxford." Lord Elibank has underlined the phrases and sentences to which he add a marginal note, presumably as part of a response, concluding with his expressing a wish to meet him when he's less "occupe".

Lee and his wife held regular festivals of 'Peace and Temperance' in the grounds at Hartwell, and he writes that he hopes Ransome has received the prospectus of the festival which he sent him. He and his wife would be pleased were Ransome to attend, and he offers him 'a Bed in our house, or to secure one for you in Aylesbury'. In a postscript he states: 'If you cannot come or your Brother; I hope that you will send some delegate, or MP. to represent Ipswich at our peaceful Congress'.

2pp., 4to. In fair condition, lightly aged and creased. After beginning 'Dear Popie / | How are you?' she asks what the 'immediate prospects' are for her to 'get a book and a series in the paper running', as she has 'scanned a tremendous amount of George's material' since moving to 'The Lawns'. In a postscript she describes the material as a 'wonderful story for T.V. too to say nothing about the films!', adding that she has 'got G. to record a lot of his old & recent material ready!' Macqueen-Pope was an admirer of Robey's, as his 'The Melodies Linger On: The Story of Music Hall' makes clear. The book was published in 1950, and as Blanche Robey's letter dates from around this time, it may be for this reason that he did not pick up on her hint that he write her husband's biography.

12mo, 1 p. Mourning border. Twelve lines. Text clear and complete. Fair, on aged paper, with small scrap torn away from top right-hand corner. By that evening's post, they have received 'the sad intelligence that my sister in law, Lady Camilla Sinclair has died at Thurso Castle'. Her brother Sir George Sinclair and his family 'are in great grief', and she is 'under the melancholy necessity of sending an apology' for cancelling 'our engagement to you which we had anticipated with so much pleasure'.

2pp, 12mo. In fair condition, aged, but with closed tear along inner edge of leaf caused by removal from mount, and affecting a couple of words of text. The letter reads: 'Sir Henry Halford assures the President of the Royal College of Surgeons that it grieves him to forgo the pleasure of being present at the Hunterian Oration today, and of waiting upon Him at dinner, but a most important engagement at King's College to meet the Council at half past two compels Sir Henry to relinquish his fixt intention -'.

See the entries on Allen and Meredith in the Oxford DNB. On one side of 20 x 18 cm piece of paper, in good condition, with two vertical folds, laid down on 4to leaf of thick gilt-edged paper removed from an autograph album of Meredith's daughter Marie Eveleen (Mariette; 1871-1933), later the wife of Henry Parkman Sturgis (1847-1929), American-born banker and Liberal politician. Sixteen lines of heavily-revised text, in Allen's close hand, with interpolation by him in the right-hand margin. The place of publication of the text has not been traced, but it is highly complimentary to Meredith. It begins: And isn't it odd how in the end the verdict of Cato always carries the day? (Our first and only appearance in the character of Cato.) Can't we all remember how one was accounted mad or at least eccentric, not so very long since, if one believed in Browning, in Holman Hunt, in Millais, even, aye, hard as it may seem now to believe it, in Tennyson. Yes indeed; I'm playing you no tricks: I can recollect hearing a man of taste read the Ballad of Oriana aloud in a burlesque voice, and then ask in indignant thuder what anybody could find to admire in that blatant nonsense-monger.' Interpolated here is the following: '(See more on this point in Mrs. Sutherland-Orr's Browning. Three hundred copies of one volume sold - the rest unsaleable!)' He continues with reference to the Saturday Reiew, 'Landor's death', 'Swinburne's Folly', Wagner, Burne-Jones, Earlswood. The manuscript concludes: 'Laugh on, mademoiselle, laugh on: you are young: you are merry: but you will live to know that they laugh last who laugh longest. Why, I can recall the time when people used to say pretty much the same thing about Mr. George Meredith. Had you there, I fancy! And now - why, now, even the general public itself is beginning to discover that no higher peak than Box Hill exists anywhere among the summits of our modern British Parnassus.'
