In den WarenkorbIntroduction by William S. Burroughs (illustrator). A fine copy in an equally fine d/j. 8vo., black boards in dust jacket; 186 pages Very scarce first edition, first printing. Brion Gysin [19161986] was a British-Canadian painter, writer, sound poet, performance artist and inventor of experimental devices. "The Last Museum" is a fantastical and nearly inaccessible last novel from Gysin, who was a friend of and collaborator with William S. Burroughs, and who here appears to be re-writing Naked Lunch. Derivative, obscure, and filled with in-jokes from another era, Burroughs said that Gysin "was the only man I ever respected." A very scarce book!.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition in English, first printing, presentation copy signed and additionally inscribed by Burroughs and Gysin on the half-title, "[Burroughs:] For Jonathan Williams and Tom Meyer. With pleasant memories of London, all the best, William Dec. 4, 1978 [Gysin:] Yours in Present Time, Brion Gysin". This is a review copy, with the publisher's slip loosely inserted. Jonathan William was a Black Mountain College alumnus, poet, publisher, and photographer; his partner Tom Meyer was a poet and translator. In 1951, Williams founded the Jargon Society to publish the work of neglected poets. It remains one of the oldest and most esteemed small presses in the USA and has been central to the development of the literary avant-garde, publishing writers such as Charles Olson, Kenneth Patchen, Denise Levertov, and Paul Metcalf. The Third Mind was first published in French by Flammarion in 1976 as Oeuvre croisée. Not in Maynard & Miles. Octavo. Black and white illustrations throughout. Original black quarter cloth, spine lettered in silver, grey paper-covered sides. With dust jacket. Faint foxing to edges; flaps of unclipped jacket lightly toned, trivial foxing to verso: a near-fine copy in like jacket.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition, first printing, signed by Burroughs on the title page. This is one of only 1,000 copies of Burroughs's attempt to "rub out the word"; signed copies are uncommon. The Exterminator comprises pieces of Burroughs's earlier writing scrambled and "thrown at the reader, or rather, sprayed at him in the same way a machinegun [sic] sprays its target" (rear cover). It is distinct from the short story Exterminator! (1973), which represents "Burroughs' induction into the mainstream and corporate publishing" (Birmingham). In contrast, The Exterminator was published by the printer-poet Dave Haselwood's Auerhahn Press, a small press responsible for publishing many of the key poets of the San Francisco Renaissance in the 1960s. Maynard & Miles A4. Original white wrappers lettered in red and black with Gysin design in green. Covers faintly toned with trivial marks: a fine copy.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition, first printing, signed limited issue, number 8 of 115 copies signed by Burroughs and Gysin, this copy retaining the rare publisher's prospectus. Burroughs dedicated this book to Gysin, his friend of nearly 50 years, "My artistic and psychic debt to whom I can never repay". Gysin died later the same year, and it is likely that The Cat Inside was their final published collaboration. Burroughs, famed for his early literary accounts of drug abuse and violence, writes here of the significance of feline companionship. He drifts between memories of cats he has encountered in his life and vivid dreamscapes populated by feline creatures, with occasional asides to address foxes, dogs, and skunks. Schottlaender A58A & G1; Shoaf 78 & 29. Not in Maynard & Miles. Folio. Title vignette and 7 drawings by Brion Gysin, printed in red and black. Original quarter vellum, spine lettered in silver, red hand-painted paper over boards, Gysin design in black on front board, edges untrimmed. With early acetate, likely original. Price in publisher's prospectus inked out. Corners bumped and slightly worn; acetate chipped, edges creased, loss to lower edges: a near-fine copy in good acetate.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition, first printing, signed on the title page by Brion Gysin, next to his printed name. This was the first book of cut-up poetry published by Burroughs, Gysin, and their collaborators: "the original manifesto and manual of the method" (Harris), and marks the first of Burroughs and Gysin's many collaborations. Burroughs and Gysin met at the Beat Hotel in Paris, in October 1959, where Burroughs was first introduced to Gysin's cut-up paintings, which influenced much of his later writing. By the time they had met, Gysin had already contributed the notorious marijuana fudge recipe to Alice B. Toklas's Cookbook, and the pair's time in Paris together was dominated by "mirror-gazing, scrying, trance and telepathy, all fuelled by a wide variety of mind-altering drugs" (Stevens, p. 50). It was from this febrile atmosphere that the present book emerged. Burroughs contributes eleven pieces to the volume, and Gysin five, including "First Cut-Ups" and the titular poem, "Minutes to Go". The cut-up technique later influenced some of the 20th century's most important artists, from the Beat Generation to David Bowie. Maynard & Miles A3a. Oliver Harris, "'Burroughs Is a Poet Too, Really': The Poetics of Minutes to Go", RealityStudio, available online; Matthew Levi Stevens, The Magical Universe of William S. Burroughs, 1999. Octavo. Original blue and white wrappers, rear wrapper designed by Gysin, lettering to spine in blue, to front white. Spine a little sunned, extending to front wrapper, extremities a touch rubbed, lower rear wrapper a little soiled with short closed tear, pale foxing to fore edge, a few marks to endpapers else internally fresh. A very good copy indeed.

In den WarenkorbZustand: Very Good. First Edition. Number One, Spring 1964. 103 pp. Illustrated magenta wraps. Very Good with sunned and faintly stained wraps, creased spine, old price written on front free endpaper. The first and only issue of a mostly expatriate literary journal compiled in Tangier, Morocco. It features the photos of Jack Smith (stills from his film Flaming Creatures), as well as work from famous Beats Allen Ginsberg, Michael McClure, and William S. Burroughs. The latter's influence on Bob Dylan was profound. This literary magazine was featured on Dylan's mantelpiece on the front cover of the album Bringing It All Back Home as per Dylan's request, which is a testament to that influence that also made this one-off production an instant cult favorite.
