Die gesicherte Stammlinie der Familie läßt sich auf Mayer Moses (? n. 1712) aus Rohrbach bei Heidelberg zurückführen. Er betrieb seit 1692 als Schutzjude der Grafen von Pappenheim in Regensburg einen Warenhandel und belieferte dort Gesandtschaften des Reichstags. Sein SohnElkan (um 1690-1721?) führte das Handelsgeschäft weiter. Dessen Sohn David Elkan (1722-92) ließ sich 1737 als Schutzjude der Fürsten von Oettingen-Wallerstein in Harburg nieder. Sein Sohn Elkan (1738-1814) eröffnete dort einen Kramwarenhandel. 1785-99 übernahm er die fürstliche Salzpacht und brachte es 1792 zu einem Vermögen von 9000 fl. Anschließend betrieb er einen Tuchhandel und stieg ins Geldwechselgeschäft ein. Sein jüngster Sohn David (1793-1840) führte das Geschäft weiter. Der älteste Sohn Amschel Elkan (1773-1833) zog 1800 nach Wallerstein und baute dort unter der Firmierung "A. E. Wassermann" neben dem Geldgeschäft einen Tuch- und Lederwarenhandel auf, der während der Napoleonischen Kriege durch Lieferungen an die bayer. Armee großen Aufschwung nahm. Buch.
