Lze je povazovat za nejdojemnejsi svedectvi prezivsich i zavrazdenych z zenskeho tabora v Osvetimi-Brezince. Pohled doktorky Perlove na udalosti v Osvetimi neni jen ryze osobni, ale vypravi take o ostatnich veznich, dozorcich ci nacistickych funkcionarich. Jako gynekolog a porodnik pusobila v takzvane taborove nemocnici a v neblaze proslule laboratori Josefa Mengeleho. Jeji lekarskou odbornost naciste zneuzili. Zadani, ktera mela plnit, byla nepochopitelna, vzpirala se jakekoli vedecke i lekarske hodnote. Marne se snazila objasnit smysl sokujicich experimentu, k nimz Mengele pouzival zidovske, romske i ostatni vezenkyne a pri nichz mu musela asistovat. Jeji roli ji prinutili hrat pod hrozbou smrti zastrelenim, bicovanim nebo fenolovou injekci. Jedine, co mohla konstatovat, ze ucelem i vysledkem Mengeleho vyzkumu bylo muceni a zabijeni. S palcivym sebezpytovanim lici, jak mucive bylo jeji rozhodnuti ukoncit tehotenstvi a zpusobit smrt deti, aby zachranila zivoty nekolika tisic zen. Byt doktorkou v Osvetimi vyzadovalo vyjimecnou odvahu a obetavost, vazila si respektu, ktery ji za to projevovaly jeji spoluvezenkyne. Uzasne je, ze si uchovala schopnost citit naklonnost ci lasku k trpicim zenam, dokazala je utesit a nekdy i znovu probudit jejich vuli k zivotu. Ze svych vzpominek stvorila naprosto jedinecne svedectvi. "Nikdo nikdy nemuze pochopit, co pro me znamenalo nicit zivoty techto deti. Po vsech tech letech lekarske praxe pro me bylo zrozeni stale tim nejkrasnejsim, nejvetsim zazrakem prirody. Dr. Gisella Perl. Nov. 1983." Laid in is a 1984 autograph note signed on Rabbi Pesach Raymon Yeshiva letterhead, from Yesioel Aurbach(?) to Goldman, thanking him for loaning the book. First published in 1948.
