No poet was more influential on music history in the late Renaissance and Baroque eras than Guarini. While Guarini's work may be seen as lacking the deep feeling and sentiment of Torquato Tasso, his rival at the Estensi court, it was precisely this quality which commended it to musical setting at a time when excessive emotionalism had become unfashionable. Tasso's Aminta is a pastoral drama of very simple plot, but of exquisite lyrical charm. It appeared at the moment when music, under Palestrina's impulse, was becoming the main art of Italy. The honeyed melodies and sensuous melancholy of Aminta exactly suited and interpreted the spirit of its age. Its influence, in opera and cantata, was felt through two successive centuries. Per quanto le formule editoriali siano diverse, ad accomunare queste opere c'è ancora la ricerca di un confronto tra la tradizione cinquecentesca dell'ars epistolandi e le nuove necessità del segretario, nei suoi complessi rapporti con il potere? Le raccolte epistolari del Cinquecento tra inquietudini religiose e ?buon volgare?, Bari, 2009, p. 245).?Non vi è dubbio però che proprio in questo periodo il solco fra l'idealismo dei letterati e la realtà ?effettuale' si approfondisca sempre più, specie in concomitanza con l'irrigidimento delle istituzioni politiche e religiose segnalato dagli storici nell'ultimo trentennio del secolo. Sicché, se si esaminano altri trattati si può riscontrare che l'aspirazione a definire platonicamente l'idea, la ?nobil forma del segretario', come si esprime per l'appunto il Tasso in un sonetto in lode dell'Ingegneri, viene sostituita da un metodo analitico di ispirazione aristotelica che, delimitando rigorosamente gli spazi delle singole discipline, assegna a ciascuna di esse oggetti, finalità e strumenti differenziati, ai quali risultano subordinate anche le diverse attività intellettuali. Una riflessione di questo tipo, che finisce per porre di nuovo l'accento sulle competenze esclusivamente retoriche, si può cogliere nel Segretario di Battista Guarini, pubblicato nel 1594. L'esperienza umana dell'autore del Pastor fido ci riporta ancora una volta al mondo della Ferrara estense: il suo ingresso a corte risaliva infatti, come per il Tasso, all'epoca in cui il Pigna, accentrando in sé tutti i poteri, ne rappresentava la figura dominante; e proprio alla ?ambizione' e ?cupidità' di questi il Guarini attribuiva le difficoltà sperimentate nel conseguire una collocazione professionale soddisfacente. Rare and finely produced edition of Giovanni Battista Guarini's (1538-1612) famous pastoral drama Il Pastor Fido, here of special interest for its fine binding by the so-called "Bird's Head Bindery", Amsterdam. The design is exceptionally rich but light for a Dutch binding from the period. The spine compartments show a charming lozenge with the head of a girl carrying a basket of flowers and the outer frame on the sides shows birds among leafy sprays. The four corners on each board show a fine carnation (t. 28). This Amsterdam bindery probably started its activities ca. 1728 with work for the book collector Gosuinus Uilenbroek (1658-1714). Storm van Leeuwen notes that "the Bird's Head Bindery made many presentation bindings that were definitely or probably commissioned by publishers." The "richness of execution and the Amsterdam publisher" of the present work "indicate that it may have been a presentation copy" (Storm van Leeuwen).In very good condition with the binding slightly rubbed, corners slightly bumped, scratch across lower part of front board.
