In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. First American edition. SIGNED. 213pp. Duodecimo [19.5 cm] Black paper over boards with a metallic-pink stamped title on the backstrip and a circular printed title label on the front board. With a very minor lean to the spine and light soiling to the label on the front board. No dust jacket. Signed by Haruki Murakami on the front flyleaf. A often dreamlike novel which recounts the story of Hajime ("Beginning") from his childhood as an only child in a small town in Japan to his adulthood in Tokyo. From the publisher- "Hajime has arrived at middle age with a loving family and an enviable career, yet he feels incomplete. When a childhood friend, now a beautiful woman, shows up with a secret from which she is unable to escape, the fault lines of doubt in Hajime's quotidian existence begin to give way. Rich, mysterious, and quietly dazzling, in South of the Border, West of the Sun the simple arc of one man's life becomes the exquisite literary terrain of Murakami's remarkable genius.".

Bechman and his son Nicholas Blechman. Fine in about fine dust jacket with small light crease at the upper front cover. A book about literary collaboration appropriately collaborated on between Murakami and Motoyuki, a translator who is widely venerated in Japan for his translations of English language literature (mostly American) books into Japanese including books by Thomas Pynchon, Paul Auster, Richard Powers and Edward Gorey. This copy Signed (and perhaps inscribed) by Murakami in Japanese and with his stamp in English and additionally by Motoyuki in both Japaense and English. In den WarenkorbFirst edition of this classic collection of stories, one of which was the basis for the 2018 acclaimed film Burning. Octavo, original boards. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author in the year of publication on the half-title page, "To Karen Haruki Murakami (in both Japanese and English) 5/6/93 Princeton, NJ." Additionally signed three times by jacket designer Chip Kidd, once on the front panel, above Murakami's signature and on the jacket rear panel. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Jacket design by Chip Kidd. Translated from the Japanese by Alfred Birnbaum and Jay Rubin. In these stories, a man sees his favorite elephant vanish into thin air; a newlywed couple suffers attacks of hunger that drive them to hold up a McDonaldâs in the middle of the night; and a young woman discovers that she has become irresistible to a little green monster who burrows up through her backyard. By turns haunting and hilarious, in The Elephant Vanishes Murakami crosses the border between separate realitiesâ"and comes back bearing remarkable treasures. âThese stories show us Japan as itâs experienced from the inside. . . . [They] take place in parallel worlds not so much remote from ordinary life as hidden within its surfaces. . . . Even in the slipperiest of Mr. Murakamiâs stories, pinpoints of detail flash out . . . warm with life, hopelesslyâ"and wonderfullyâ"unstable" (The New York Times Book Review).

In den WarenkorbFirst editions in English of the author's most well-known work. Small octavos, original wrappers as issued. Both volumes are fine in fine dust jackets. Both volumes are boldly signed by Haruki Murakami on the title pages. Translated from the Japanese by Alfred Birnbaum. Norwegian Wood is a nostalgic story of loss and sexuality. The story's protagonist and narrator is Toru Watanabe, who looks back on his days as a freshman university student living in Tokyo. Through Toru's reminiscences we see him develop relationships with two very different women the beautiful yet emotionally troubled Naoko, and the outgoing, lively Midori. The novel is set in Tokyo during the late 1960s, a time when Japanese students, like those of many other nations, were protesting against the established order. While it serves as the backdrop against which the events of the novel unfold, Murakami (through the eyes of Toru and Midori) portrays the student movement as largely weak-willed and hypocritical. Murakami adapted the first section of the novel from an earlier short story, "Firefly." The story was subsequently included in the collection Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman.

The translation received the 2006 World Fantasy Award and was one of the New York Times's ten best books of 2005. John Updike has compared Murakami's "dreamlike" narratives to the works of Kobo Abe, likening the dream sequences in Kafka on the Shore to those found in The Tale of Genji, in which Lady Rokujo travels "down the tunnel of her subconscious". Kafka on the Shore was published in Japanese by Shinchosha in 2002. John Updike, "Subconscious Tunnels", New Yorker, 24 January 2005. Octavo. Original blind-stamped pink cloth in plain glassine dust-jacket and slipcase with obi. A fine copy. 618, [6]pp. Tokyo, Shinkosha, Murakami's fourth book, Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World was awarded the Tanizaki prize in 1985. The book is a dystopian depiction of a society overcome with artificial intelligence and strictly regulated data. The story alternates between two places and storylines ? in the Hard-Boiled Wonderland chapters, the protagonist is a young 'Calcutec' (or Keisanshi ? a person who is used to process and encrypt data) working in a complex underground network in Tokyo, while in The End of the World chapters, the protagonist exists within an walled town where he visits a library by night to learn how to read dreams from unicorn skulls. As the two plot lines intertwine, the reader is presented with a surrealist portrait of the narrator who is caught between multiple worlds and states of mind. A masterful combination of Murakami's signature magic realism and dystopian ideas, the book was praised for its contribution to sci-fi literature. According to an interview by The Paris Review in 2004, it was Murakami's favourite novel among his works.

In den WarenkorbUnderground is a journalistic work with fictional aspects that recounts the sarin gas attacks by the Aum Shinrikyo group in Tokyo on March 20th, 1995. Shortly after the attack, Murakami began interviewing victims and published his thoughts in an essay entitled ?Blind Nightmare: Where are we Japanese Going??, which also features as the last chapter in Underground. The interviews were originally serialised in the monthly magazine Bungei Shunju. The book describes 62 individuals based on these interviews, which are arranged in groups according to the subway lines they were on at the time of the attacks. Murakami strove to bring out the unique characteristics of each, heightening their family circumstances, indiosyncrasies, habits, as well as their dreams and fears. Compared to his other novels, Murakami's Underground expresses a different form of magic realism, and is a remarkable feat of psycho-geographical writing. Loosely inserted is a signed photograph by Koichi Inakoshi, whose work was used for the dust jacket design.
