First edition of a rare emblem book on the prolongation of life ('de vita protehende"). A very good, firm copy in full period vellum. Double-page engraving as frontispiece, slightly worn at edges. 8vo, 876 pp. (plates not counted in pagination) + 95 (supplementary work by the second author) + 32 pp. (index and errata). The supplementary work, by Erasmus Francisci (Erasmus Fink) is not indexed; it is dated 1691 at the end. The main body of the work, by Lochner, is dedicated to Sophie Catherine of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg (1617-1696) and considers the long life spans of the patriarchs in the Bible, lamenting the lamentably curtailed life spans of modern humanity and its causes. The second work, a commentary in the form of a missive to Lochner, is by the polymath Erasmus Francisci (Erasmus Fink) (1627-1694). It is dated 1691 at the end. Fink wrote on a wide range of subjects, besides the inevitable theology, e.g., on the Kingdom of Hungary, the defeat of the Turks at Vienna, peoples of the world, gardens, comets, and so on. His contribution to the work is a tribute to Johann Ernst von Wallenrodt (1615-1697). Wallenrodt continued the work of his father in forming a great library in Königsberg that existed until near the end of World War II, when part of it was destroyed and the rest taken to the Soviet Union as war booty. As is usual with such Baroque works, the display of erudition is overwhelming. Much of the second work is devoted to the career of the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, who was then reigning in India.
