The complex and refined creative imagination of Carlo Mollino - an eclectic personality of the Italian twentieth century - is the common thread that unites the research documented in these pages, which combines a selection of photographs from the fifties and sixties, shot by Mollino himself, with the works of Enoc Perez and Brigitte Schindler, artists united by a visionary spirit aimed at experimentation. The volume opens with the shots of the splendid and provocative models portrayed by Mollino (Turin, 1905-1973), through which the author on the one hand explores the beauty of female nature and on the other aims to compose an image - subjective and transfigured - of the woman as the ideal counterpart of his existence. Enoc Perez (San Juan, Puerto Rico, 1967) began a personal investigation in the nineties on a series of iconic twentieth-century architectures, which he transposed into paintings with an indefinite, sometimes dreamlike flavor: among these stands out Casa Mollino - the architect's last enigmatic and secret residence, which now houses the Museum -, visited by the painter in 2019 and the subject of the works presented here. The same house, designed by Mollino down to the smallest detail and conceived as a mirror of his worldview, was a source of inspiration for Brigitte Schindler (Munich, 1972), whose photographs intercept the mystery suspended in the rooms, the subtle connections between the objects carefully chosen and positioned by the owner. Der Turiner Architekt Carlo Mollino (1905-1973) gehört zu den schillerndsten Figuren der italienischen Nachkriegszeit. Nachdem er 1931 an der Höheren Architekturschule seiner Heimatstadt promoviert hatte, war es ihm dank seines väterlichen Erbes möglich, sich in tausend Aktivitäten zu verlieren: Flug-Akrobatik, Fotografie, Skisport, Literatur, Automobil- und Möbel-Design. Als Architekt profilierte er sich erstmals mit seinem Reitclub in Turin (1937-1940). Nachdem Mollinos in den letzten zwei Jahren sowohl in Turin als auch im Pariser Centre Pompidou in umfangreichen Retrospektiven gedacht wurde, konzentrierte sich das Basler Architekturmuseum zusammen mit der Architekturabteilung der Universität Genf auf einen Aspekt im architektonischen Werk Mollinos: das Bauen in den Bergen. Hier hat er Aussergewöhnliches geleistet und vorbildliche Methoden entwickelt.

Zu einer Zeit, als Photographie weit davon entfernt war, als Kunstgattung anerkannt zu sein, widmete er sich 139 modernen Photographen, darunter mit eigenen Kapiteln Nadar und Hill, Atget, Alvarez Bravo und Man Ray. Der großformatige Leinenband lehnt sich getreu an die erste opulente, von Mollino selbst gestaltete Ausgabe an, die 1949 in Turin erschien. Die Bildtafeln sind von Hand montiert.

However, he was also inspired to create the most individual of designs by the Futurism of Gaudí, Niemeyer and Le Corbusier. His extravagant furniture, which he produced in limited numbers or as unique pieces, is still extremely sought after. It is an expression of the designer's extraordinary fantasy: chairs can look like deer, the ribs of a table like the human spinal column, backrests like skis.
