The Haarlem artist Pieter Saenredam (1597-1665) is best known for his cityscapes and drawings and paintings of church interiors. In the summer of 1632 Saenredam spent a month in Den Bosch. He stayed there with his cousin, the preacher Johannes Junius. Saenredam made in a short time in Den Bosch a varied number of drawings, including cityscapes, church interiors and monuments. Every drawing was precisely dated by him, giving us an accurate picture of its work in the summer of 1632. The works that resulted from Saenredams visit to Den Bosch are now, for the first time, brought together in a book published on the occasion of the exhibition in the renovated Noordbrabants Museum. It is about fourteen drawings and two paintings. Saenredam in Den Bosch contains many new facts and useful information about the works of one of the most outstanding painters of the Golden Age.

Seine oft allegorisch aufgefassten Motive sind biblischer sowie mythologischer Herkunft.Hendrick Goltzius (1558 Bracht / Brüggen - 1616/17 Haarlem). Niederländischer Maler und Kupferstecher, Hauptmeister des Manierismus. Schüler von Dirck Volkertszoon Coornhert und Philipp Galle. Reiste ab 1590 mehrere Jahre durch Italien und Deutschland. Machte sich um die Weiterentwicklung des Kupferstichs verdient, indem er den Stich als solchen außerordentlich variabel behandelte - sogenannter Taille-Stich - und sowohl in Dynamik als auch Stärke variierte. Damit hat er die Kupferstichtechnik insgesamt zu einer völlig neuartigen Modellierfähigkeit geführt. Goltzius drohte zwar mit seinen technisch teilweise extrem forcierten Blättern ins übermäßig Artifizielle abzugleiten, wurde jedoch bereits zu Lebzeiten zu Recht als brillanter Stecher gefeiert. Niobe war die Tochter von Tanatalos. Während der Feierlichkeiten in Theben zu Ehren von Latona, der Mutter von Apollo und Diana, wirft Niobe den Thebanern vor, Latona geopfert zu haben. Die Göttin Latona beschwert sich bei ihren beiden Kindern, die daraufhin ihre Ehre rächen, indem sie Niobes vierzehn Kinder mit Pfeilen töten. Ganz links versucht Niobe, ihre Kinder zu beschützen. Unter der Darstellung ergänzt eine lateinische Beschriftung das Geschehen. Die Radierung ist von Jan Saenredam nach einem Gemälde von Polidoro da Caravaggio nach einer Zeichnung von Hendrick Goltzius hergetsellt. Er stach vor allem nach Bildern zeitgenössischer Künstler, aber auch nach eigenen Entwürfen.

Allegory on the Dutch victory over Spain at the Battle of Nieuwpoort, 1600. A triumphal carriage is drawn by chained Spanish prisoners, among them Francisco de Mendoza. Driving the carriage is the female personification of victory who carries a lance with the coats of arms of the conquered cities. Behind her are seated Prudentia and the Dutch Lion carrying a sword and a lance with a freedom hat, and from the back of the carriage sprouts an orange tree with the coat of arms of Prince Maurice (Maurits) of Orange. The procession is accompanied by Concordia, Vigilantia, Fama blowing the two trumpets, and a group of musicians playing various musical instruments. The carriage is followed by a crowd, including members of the States General. Title above: 'Elenchus rerum, deo auspice, a confoederatis Belgis praeclare gestarum'. Signed in lower left: 'I. Zustand: sehr guter Zustand. Folge von 5 Blatt Kupferstichen, 1606, auf Bütten, Blatt 3 mit Wasserzeichen: Lilienwappen und anhängendem HP (ligiert). Je ca. 26,1:36,6 cm. Literatur: Bartsch 2-6; Wurzbach 2-6; Hollstein 30, III (von III): mit Saenredams Adresse. Schöne kontrastreiche Drucke, meist knapp auf die Einfassungslinie geschnitten oder mit winzigem Rändchen um diese. - Kleine Fehlstellen und Einrisse sorgfältig restauriert, vertikale Falten geglättet. Das Motiv, eines der fünf Parabeln aus dem Neuen Testament, ist in der christlichen Kunst seit dem 4. Jahrhundert nachweisbar, war aber besonders im Mittelalter populär. Die fünf klugen und die fünf törichten Jungfrauen sind in ihrer Gesamtheit seit dem 12. Jahrhundert vollplastisch an Kirchenportalen zu sehen, so an der Brauttür des Magdeburger Doms, an der Westfassade des Straßburger Münsters, am Westportal der Kathedralen von Amiens, Bourges, Notre-Dame in Paris, Reims, Sens, Auxerre und Laon. Die von Jesus angeführten klugen Jungfrauen werden lächelnd, die nachfolgenden törichten Jungfrauen hingegen mit verzweifelter Miene dargestellt; die einen rechts, die anderen links vom göttlichen Richter. Es geht um die Vorbereitung auf das Reich Gottes, und damit um den Unterschied zwischen Auserwählung und Verdammung. So symbolisieren die klugen Jungfrauen, die sich vorausschauend mit Öl für ihre Öllampen versorgt haben, die christliche Seele, die sich in fünffacher Weise tugendhaft Gott zuwendet; die törichten Jungfrauen hingegen, die zwar Öllampen haben, aber diese nicht nachfüllten, symbolisieren fünf Arten der fleischlichen Lust und Verdammnis. Die Aufmerksamkeit des Künstlers, der das Geschehen in fünf Szenen wiedergibt, gilt in gleichen Teilen den tugendhaften, sich auf den Bräutigam vorbereitenden Jungfrauen, wie auch dem frivolen, ausschweifenden und selbstsüchtigen Handeln der Törichten.
