Boards show moderate wear to edges and corner, with light plus bumping to head/tail of spine, and light shelf wear overall. Text block has moderate age toning to edges, light age toning and occasional foxing to pages interiorly throughout, and the ownership inscription of a previous owner on the second free end paper and title page ("John Breed / 1769"). The ex libris of a previous owner ("Ronald Paulson") appears on the front paste down. Note (Per the ESTC): "Place of publication suggested by Bristol." Includes: "The Life of the Author" by Patrick Murdoch, and "Ode on the Death of Mr. Thomson" by William Collins. Contemporary full hard-grain sheep, gilt spine. Two small tears to the upper right corners of pages 23-26, a very good copy. A scarce early American imprint, illustrated with 6 exceptional, unsigned, white-line wood-engravings: Hymn (frontispiece), Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter, and another "Hymn" at the rear, "Breathe your still Song into the reaper's heart." Although not marked as such, this copy is from the library of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Peter Taylor and his wife, the National Book Award-nominated poet Eleanor Ross Taylor.

Complete in fifty-three volumes, 8vo, Chaucer in six volumes, Dryden and Spenser in five, Burns, Churchill, Cowper, Milton, Pope and Swift in three and Butler, Prior, Thomson and Young in two. Portrait frontispieces of all the poets except Falconer, as published, some light foxing, armorial bookplates of Philip Stapleton Humberston in all but the Spenser volumes, Pickering's small bookseller's label to the paste downs of 22 volumes. Original full morocco in various colours, a.e.g., the Spenser volumes with some wear to the joints and spine ends, otherwise a very good set.
