Grabado del impresor en ambas portadas y 749 grabados repartidos por el texto, todo coloreado a mano de época. Encuadernación alemana de época en pergamino sobre tabla, ricamente decorada con gofrados en los planos. Primera edición de este famoso herbario al que siguieron numerosas ediciones posteriores. La Naturalis historiae es uno de los textos botánicos más populares y sus reediciones se extendieron por más de 250 años "ningún otro trabajo botánico de la época tuvo un éxito comparable a Lonitzer, el cual es el más importante y valioso" (trd. L'Art Ancien, Early books on Medicine, p.350). Esta primera edición es muy rara. El libro contiene 749 excelentes grabados en madera de plantas, animales y trabajos del campo todos estrictamente coloreados a mano de época. Además de las descripción y nombre de las plantas en varias lenguas describiendo la flora local, el trabajo incluye numerosas referencias a las plantas medicinales y sus remedios curativos. Contiene también amplios e interesantes capítulos dedicados a los animales, a los metales, las piedras preciosas y todo un tratado de destilación. Su éxito se debió en gran parte a que supo actualizar y compendiar los numerosos herbarios más tempranos que se habían impreso. Los numerosos grabados que ilustran el texto son una muestra del numeroso inventario de xilografías botánicas de Egenolph e incluyen copias piratas de algunos que se utilizaron para la Historia stirpium de Fuchs y los Herbarum de Brunfels, Rösslin y Dorsten. It was published regularly for the following 250 years in both Latin and German. 'No other botanical works of the period had a success comparable to that of Egenolph's herbal of which [that of Lonitzer] is the most important and valuable'. (l' Art Ancien, Early books on medicine, p. 350). Lonitzer (1528-1586) was the son-in law of the publisher, Chritopher Egenolph, he was one of the first to distinguish deciduous trees from conifers. Title page shows 1.25 in-long area of damage to lower edge, repaired, but resulting in loss of publication information. Adam Lonicer was a German botanist who studied at Marburg and the University of Mainz, obtaining his Magister degree at sixteen years of age. After becoming a Doctor of Medicine in 1554, he became the town physician in Frankfurt am Main. His true interest though was herbs and the study of botany. His first important work on herbs, the Kräuterbuch, was published in 1557, with a large part dealing with distillation. He married Magdalena Egenolff, the daughter of Christian Egenolff, his Frankfurt publisher and a printer who specialized in herbals. The work that made his name famous is this popular herbal, the Kräuterbuch. Lonicer provides us with one of the early descriptions of local flora as well as being one of the first to differentiate deciduous trees from conifers. With about 320 mostly botanical woodcuts in the text, coloured throughout in green, yellow, blue, red and pink in a strictly contemporary hand (3 botanical illustrations repeated on the title-page and a few of the non-botanical illustrations including repeats in the text), about 70 woodcut-decorated initials plus a few repeats (4 series, the largest pictorial and the others white on black, often with multiple blocks for the same letter), many cut by Sebald Beham. Set in roman types with Greek and Schwabacher for the Greek and German names. Restored 18th century calf covers, modern spine rebacked with lighter leather in six compartments with gilt floral ornamentation and giltstamped red morocco label. Marbled endpapers (free endpapers renewed). All edges red. First edition of Theodor Dorsten's Latin adaptation of Eucharius Rösslin's extensive and beautifully illustrated German herbal, "Kreutterbuch", first published (also by Egenolff) in 1535. It includes about 284 botanical illustrations originally cut for the Rösslin edition, many based on the pioneering naturalistic illustrations cut by Hans Weiditz for Otto Brunfels's "Herbarium vivae eicones" (1530-36). Most show complete plants including roots, some show fruits or other parts of plants, and about 36 mostly smaller woodcuts (including a few repeats) show containers for the medicines or other relevant objects. - Egenolff clearly saw the importance of the new and more accurate style of illustration, and engaged the best woodblock cutters to produce his blocks. While Brunfels's "Herbarium" had no text beyond the names of the plants, Egenolff saw the importance of combining the images with detailed botanical medical texts, first in German by Rösslin and here in Latin by Theodor Dorsten (1492-1552), a physician and professor in Marburg, Germany. The book therefore played a considerable role in bringing botanical medical knowledge to a wider public, both in Germany and abroad. Dorsten's adaptation was also further developed in German for Adam Lonitzer's "Kreutterbuch" in 1557. The present first edition of Dorsten is an appealing piece of book production: the roman type (following the "Venetian" style of Nicolaus Jenson, but in the variant form prevalent north of the Alps) perfectly complements the woodcuts, and the presswork is excellent. The present edition appeared in two simultaneous issues, the present issue repeating three of the botanical illustrations on the title-page and the other instead showing Egenolff's woodcut burning heart device (USTC 616902 & VD 16, D2443): most catalogues do not distinguish the two. - Edges of title reinforced with old paper on verso. 17th century ownerships "Andreae Biscontis" and "Miguel Burilly" to lower edge of title-page. Some damp- and brownstaining throughout, several near-contemporary annotations, mostly trimmed at rebinding. This work contains sixty-one original illustrated pages and plates from works by German, English, French, Italian, Dutch and Swiss writers from the 15th to 19th centuries. With an introduction and bibliographies of all authors. Printing techniques include wood-engravings, copper engravings, lithographs, and chromolithographs. In 1968, a German edition of just one hundred copies was issued, without Peter S. Dance's introduction. Plans for an English edition were delayed. In 1990, Sandra Raphael translated the work and added more references. But publication was delayed once again. Finally, in 2024, Nissen's wish to present his work to the English-speaking world became reality. However, due to the limited material available, only ninety copies instead of a scheduled one hundred copies were produced. It is noteworthy that this is not a direct translation of the German edition. Some of the plates (and hence the explanatory text revised) were taken from different books than the German edition, more focussing on the English-speaking authors. This edition is expanded with a preface by the British malacologist and biohistorian S. Peter Dance. Two leaves are from incunabula ( Ortus Sanitatis), of which one is hand-coloured; two are post-incunabula ( Gart der Gusundheit [1509], and Hortus Sanitatis [1517]; six are later 16th-century works.
