The title story, "The Stratagem," is a strange tale of escape from Devil's Island, in which the absolute horror of imprisonment becomes an allegory of human manners, and hopes. Aleister Crowley (1875-1947), formerly Edward Alexander Crowley, was a British occultist, writer, and mountaineer. He joined the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn in 1898, an organization descended from the Rosicrucians. Crowley's most stringent belief was "Do what thou wilt should be the whole of law," and he founded a new religion that he called Thelema from this theory. He is recognized today as the author of the twentieth century's most influential books on occultism. Presumed first edition by Temple Press (no other Temple Press printings listed).
