Paperback. Zustand: Fair. "Bloomsbury Poetry Classics" are selections from the work of some of our greatest poets. The series is aimed at the general reader rather than the specialist and carries no critical or explanatory apparatus. This can be found elsewhere. In the series the poems introduce themselves, on an uncluttered page and in a format that is both attractive and convenient. The selections have been made by the distinguished poet, critic and biographer Ian Hamilton. Although now famed cheifly as a playwright, Oscar Wilde started his career as a poet, winning the Newdigate Prize at Oxford in 1878. A disciple of Walter Pater his determinedly "aesthetic" affectations found their first literary expression in a book called "Poems" (1881). It was as a coming poet that he toured the United States in 1882. After his marriage two years later, Wilde for several years wrote prose, including one novel, "The Picture of Dorian Gray", and it was not until the early 1890s that he began scoring his theatrical successes. Then came his friendship with Lord Alfred Douglas, and his imprisonment in 1895 for "homosexual offences". Bankrupted and disgraced, Wilde on his release exiled himself in France and there wrote "The Ballad of Reading Jail", now generally recognised as his sole poetic master-work. He died in Paris in 1900, aged 46. A readable copy of the book which may include some defects such as highlighting and notes. Cover and pages may be creased and show discolouration.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. 'I have nothing to declare,' Wilde once told an American customs official, 'except my genius.' A good part of that genius is evident in the essays and poems included in this volume. There is the intellectual genius of "The Soul of Man under Socialism", in which he clearly foresaw the dangers of economic bureaucracy and state-worship: for Wilde, socialism meant liberation and individuality, not enslavement. Then there is the emotional genius of "De Profundis", the long, introspective and often hostile letter he addressed to Lord Alfred Douglas from prison. And there is the poetical genius of "The Ballad of Reading Gaol", in which Wilde's generous nature could movingly express for another's misery the sorrow he found it hard to express for his own. This collection contains, too, many examples of that humorous and epigrammic genius which captured the London theatre and which, by suddenly casting light from an unexpected angle, widened the bounds of truth. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Lord Alfred Douglas, 1870-1945, nicknamed Bosie, poet, translator and author, best remembered now for his high-profile relationship with Oscar Wilde. Douglas includes a short prefatory note stating that 'the poems in this collection, dating from about 1890 to the present year 1919, are printed in something approximating to chronological order. Consequently readers are invited to note that the best poems are not, generally speaking, to be found in the beginning of the volume.' By 1919, Douglas had converted to Catholicism and publicly condemned Wilde and homosexuality; his homoerotic early poems including Two Loves is conspicuously absent from this volume. A. Gladys Kernot is presumably the New Zealand poet of Chrysanthemums.

The misery and wretchedness of his years in prison, and the contact which they gave him with other outcasts of society, were the cause of two of the best known, if not the most widely read, pieces of Wilde's writing: The Ballad of Reading Gaol and De Profundi*. Both are included in this selection of essays and poems which is prefaced with an introduction by Heskcth Pearson, one of Wilde's more famous biographers. De Profundi; (here printed unabridged with an introduction by his son Vy vyan Holland, and with his permission) is the long introspective letter, addressed to Lord Alfred Douglas, in which Wilde so movingly described his sorrows and innermost feelings. Among the other poems included here are the famous Sonnet to Liberty, Magdalen Walks, and Ave Maria, Cratia Plena, and also the essays The Soul of Man Under Socialism and The Decay of Lying. 4.25x7in. . . . .

Josephy, a 'pioneering book designer,' of the 1920s and 30s, working for Alfred Knopf, among others, winning several awards for his work (biographical details from 1993 Hartford Courant obituary). Douglas McMurtrie was an American typeface designer, designing a few new types, as well as importing several from Europe. He also wrote several histories on printing (see Wikipedia). GOOD+ condition. A rare issue of this scarce left-wing journal, with articles, poems, stories and literary criticism by Ilya Ehrenburg, George Barker, and Douglas Garman, among others. A very scarce issue of this scarce work in the publisher's original pictorial paper wraps. Volume Three, No. 4 (May 1937) of Left Review, a journal set up by the British section of the International Union of Revolutionary Writers. This journal was established in 1934 and continued until 1938. MI5 recorded the names of all contributors to the magazine and kept detailed files on several of Left Review's contributors as possible "security risks", including Cecil Day-Lewis, Wintringham and Rex Warner.This issue includes an article on the Spanish Civil War by the notable Soviet writer and revolutionary Ilya Ehrenburg (1891-1967); an essay on Ibsen by Douglas Garman (1903-1969); poems by George Barker (1913-1991) and John Pudney (1909-1977); and a book review by Thomas Alfred Jackson (1879-1955), who was a founding member of the Socialist Party of Great Britainand later theCommunist Party of Great Britain. Some of these poems appeared in a French edition of Douglas's verse in 1896, but most were not republished until the Lyrics of 1935, along with a companion volume of Sonnets, which appeared in the same year.

Elkin Mathews and John Lane published the Club's first collections of poetry - including work by Dowson - in 1892 and 1894. After a series of family tragedies in the mid-1890s, his health began to rapidly decline, and he died at the age of 32. His poem Non Sum Qualis eram Bonae Sub Regno Cynarae provided Margaret Mitchell with the famous title of her most popular work Gone with the Wind.
