In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: Very Good. Any examination of the history of the photographic portrait uncovers two very different traditions, shaped by the place where they were made - in the street or in the studio. Both are essentially urban. The street has been the place where small and easily concealed cameras allowed photographers to capture subjects unaware or at least in informal settings. In contrast, the studio offered both photographer and subjects the opportunity to present carefully composed images to the world, making use of all the elaborate staging and technical tricks at their disposal. Both these practices have since been subverted, with celebrities becoming used to posing in the street and the studio being used for informal and intimate shots. For the first time this book examines the contrasts and tensions between these two traditions, revealing much about the history of photography itself and providing fascinating insights into the changing face of societies across the globe. The book will include many of the greatest names in the history of photography. Among those who have famously photographed in the street, it will feature work by Atget, Brassai, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Frank, Diane Arbus, Araki, Boris Mikhailov and Wolfgang Tillmans. Studio-based photographers include Carlo Ponti, Edward Steichen, Richard Avedon, David Bailey, Annie Leibovitz, Jurgen Teller, and Rineke Dijkstra. Essays by leading critics examine the history of street and studio photography and how the images these photographers have produced has conditioned the way we see both the modern city and ourselves. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

"Legendary photographer Annie Leibovitz's surprising - and surprised - account of her encounters with fashion. Looking back at my work, I see that fashion has always been there, Annie Leibovitz observes in the preface to her new book, Wonderland. Fashion plays a part in the scheme of everything, but photography always comes first for me. The photograph is the most important part. And photography is so big that it can encompass journalism, portraiture, reportage, family photographs, fashion. My work for Vogue fueled the fire for a kind of photography that I might not otherwise have explored." (publisher's blurb) Multiple copies available this title. Quantity Available: 4. In den WarenkorbZustand: Fine. Susan Sontag was our last great literary star. Her brilliant, serious mind combined with her striking image, her rigorous intellectualism and her groundbreaking inquiries into what was then seen as 'low culture' - celebrity, photographs, camp - propelled her into her own unique, inimitable category and made her famous the world over, emblematic of twentieth-century New York literary glamour. Today we need her ideas more than ever. Her writing on art and politics, feminism and homosexuality, celebrity and style, medicine and drugs, radicalism, Fascism, Freudianism, Communism and Americanism, forms an indispensable guide to our modern world. Sontag was present at many of the most crucial events of the twentieth century- when the Cuban Revolution began, and when the Berlin Wall came down, in Vietnam under American bombardment, in wartime Israel and in besieged Sarajevo. Sontag tells these stories and examines her work, as well as exploring the woman behind Sontag's formidable public face- the broken relationships, the struggles with her sexuality, her agonizing construction of herself and her public myth. Sontag is the first biography based on exclusive access to her restricted personal archives and on hundreds of interviews conducted with many people around the world who spoke freely for the first time about Susan Sontag, including Annie Leibovitz. It is a definitive portrait of an endlessly complex, dazzling woman; one of the twentieth century's greatest thinkers, who lived one of its most fascinating lives.

In den WarenkorbZustand: as new. New York : Random House, 2011. Hardcover. Dustjacket. 245 pp. 31 cm. Condition : as new. - Pilgrimage took Annie Leibovitz to places that she could explore with no agenda. She wasn't on assignment. She chose the subjects simply because they meant something to her. The first place was Emily Dickinson's house in Amherst, Massachusetts, which Leibovitz visited with a small digital camera. A few months later, she went with her three young children to Niagara Falls. "That's when I started making lists," she says. She added the houses of Virginia Woolf and Charles Darwin in the English countryside and Sigmund Freud's final home, in London, but most of the places on the lists were American. The work became more ambitious as Leibovitz discovered that she wanted to photograph objects as well as rooms and landscapes. She began to use more sophisticated cameras and a tripod and to travel with an assistant, but the project remained personal. Leibovitz went to Concord to photograph the site of Thoreau's cabin at Walden Pond. Once she got there, she was drawn into the wider world of the Concord writers. Ralph Waldo Emerson's home and Orchard House, where Louisa May Alcott and her family lived and worked, became subjects. The Massachusetts studio of the Beaux Arts sculptor Daniel Chester French, who made the seated statue in the Lincoln Memorial, became the touchstone for trips to Gettysburg and to the archives where the glass negatives of Lincoln's portraits have been saved. Lincoln's portraitistsprincipally Alexander Gardner and the photographers in Mathew Brady's studiowere also the men whose work at the Gettysburg battlefield established the foundation for war photography. At almost exactly the same time, in a remote, primitive studio on the Isle of Wight, Julia Margaret Cameron was developing her own ultimately influential style of portraiture. Leibovitz made two trips to the Isle of Wight and, in an homage to the other photographer on her list, Ansel Adams, she explored the trails above the Yosemite Valley, where Adams worked for fifty years. In den WarenkorbHardcover in slipcase, 27.1 x 37.4 cm, 5.80 kg, 556 pages XXL -ENGLISH text. ISBN 9783836582186. When Benedikt Taschen asked the most important portrait photographer working today, Annie Leibovitz, to collect her pictures in a SUMO-sized book, she was intrigued by the challenge. The project took several years to develop and when it was finally published in 2014, it weighed in at 26 kg (57 pounds). This incredible collection is now available in an accessible XXL book format. Leibovitz drew on more than 40 years of work, starting with the photojournalism she did for Rolling Stone magazine in the 1970s through the conceptual portraits she made for Vanity Fair and Vogue. She selected iconic images-such as John Lennon and Yoko Ono entwined in a last embrace-as well as portraits that had rarely, if ever, been seen before. The Annie Leibovitz SUMO covered political and cultural history, from Queen Elizabeth II and Richard Nixon to Laurie Anderson and Lady Gaga. What I had thought of initially as a simple process of imagining what looked good big, what photographs would work in a large format, became something else, Leibovitz says. The book is very personal, but the narrative is told through popular culture. It's not arranged chronologically and it's not a retrospective. It's more like a roller coaster. Fans of Leibovitz and her many celebrated subjects can now enjoy that same roller coaster ride for themselves with this unlimited edition. 0 g.

Hardcover (as issued). 280 x 355 mm. 136 pages. Language: english. Perfect condition! Collector`s copy! "Close presents 120 portraits of the world`s most famous and influential people across the arts and entertainment industries, politics, business and sport - from Julia Roberts and Adele, to Frank Gehry and Marina Abramovic, Barack Obama, Julian Assange and Roger Federer. Between 2005 and 2018 Schoeller photographed his subjects, in his words `to create a level platform, where a viewer`s existing notions of celebrity, values, and honesty are challenged.` Schoeller realized this goal by subjecting his sitters to equal technical treatment: each portrait is a close-up of a face with the same camera angle and lighting. The expressions are consistently neutral, serious yet relaxed, in an attempt to tease out his subjects? differences and capture moments `that felt intimate, unposed.` Schoeller`s inspiration for Close was the water tower series of Bernd and Hilla Becher, his ambition to adapt their systematic approach to portraiture. Amidst Schoeller`s famous subjects are also some unknown and unfamiliar ones, a means to comprehensively make his project an `informal anthropological study of the faces of our time.`" (from the publisher) "Born in 1968, Martin Schoeller is an award-winning portrait photographer renowned for his extreme close-up portraits. Schoeller worked as an assistant to Annie Leibovitz from 1993 to 1996, and since 1998 his work has appeared in Rolling Stone, National Geographic, Time, GQ, Esquire, Entertainment Weekly and the New York Times Magazine, among other publications. He joined Richard Avedon as a contributing portrait photographer at the New Yorker in 1999, where he continues to work. Schoeller exhibits internationally and his photography is held in collections including the National Portrait Gallery at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C." In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Fine condition, as new. Limited first edition. 1/10000. 20x 27.5". Altas folio. Includes white archival gloves and the tripod book stand designed by Marc Newson, as issued. This is #8616 from an edition of 10,000 copies, numbered on the colophon at the front and signed by Annie Leibovitz. Part Taschen's large format "SUMO" series, the book was issued with 4 variant dust jackets: Whoopi Goldberg, Keith Haring, David Byrne and Patti Smith. Ours is the Haring dj. "When Benedikt Taschen asked the most important portrait photographer working today to collect her pictures in a SUMO-sized book, she was intrigued and challenged. The project took several years to develop and proved to be revelatory. Annie Leibovitz drew from over 40 years of work, starting with the viscerally intimate reportage she created for Rolling Stone magazine in the 1970s and extending through the more stylized portraiture of her work for Vanity Fair and Vogue. Celebrated images such as John Lennon and Yoko Ono entwined in a last embrace are printed alongside portraits that have rarely, and sometimes never before, been seen. Annie Leibovitz was able to present some of her famous group portraits in a format that proves that she is the master of the genre. Her pictures are at once intimate and iconic, wide-ranging stylistically and also uniquely hers. Annie Leibovitz is often imitated, particularly by younger photographers, but her work is somehow immediately recognizable. The bookends of the Leibovitz collection are the black-and-white photograph of Richard Nixon's helicopter lifting off from the White House lawn after he resigned as president in 1974 and the formal color portrait of Queen Elizabeth II taken in a drawing room of Buckingham Palace in 2007. In between are portraits that make up a family album of our time: actors, dancers, comedians, musicians, artists, writers, performance artists, journalists, athletes, businesspeople. Performance and power are recurring themes. A supplementary book contains essays by Annie Leibovitz, Graydon Carter, Hans Ulrich Obrist, and Paul Roth and short texts describing the subjects of each of the over 250 photographs." - Publisher. Book is in fine, as new condition, and housed in the publisher's shipping box with original packing materials.
