Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good +. First edition. 253pp. Octavo [21cm]. Red cloth over boards, with title stamped in black ink on spine. Spine ends and foot of boards a bit bumped. Very mild moisture damage to upper right edge of textblock and rear board. Prior owner's signature in black ink on front pastedown. In a vibrant dust jacket, with the $2.50 price unclipped. Front panel is vertically creased, and there is a 6.5cm scratch near crease. Folds are a bit rubbed, with a hint of moisture damage near front flap. Rear panel a bit soiled. Scattered chipping, particularly near spine ends. Isaac Asimov's second published work, and first published collection of short stories. All were originally printed in the magazines "Super Science Stories" and "Astounding Science Fiction," then compiled by Gnome Press in a first edition run of 5,000 copies. Asimov was among the most acclaimed--and prescient--science fiction authors of the 20th century. The themes of this title's nine stories (including Asimov's famous Three Laws of Robotics) have undeniably influenced subsequent literature about artificial intelligence. In addition to literary impact, the collection occasionally features in modern technological discourse, with "I, Robot" cited in articles about everything from chatbots to automation in the workplace. Currey 17.

First edition, first printing, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "For Dean McLaughlin, where would we be without readers? 12/2/50, Isaac Asimov". Dean Benjamin McLaughlin, Jr. (b. 1931) is an American science fiction author whose novels include Hawk Among the Sparrows (1968), which was nominated for the Hugo and Nebula awards for Best Novella, and Dawn (1980), inspired by Asimov's own Nightfall (1941). This landmark collection of short stories includes "Liar", in which the author coined the term "robotics", and "Runaround", in which he sets out for the first time his Three Laws of Robotics. "Upon realizing he had coined a new and lasting word, Asimov recognized the uniquely profitable position he had created for himself, and along with the successful prediction of space travel, self-driving cars, and war-computers among others, would go on to position himself as a sort of friendly-but-rough-around-the-edges technological herald, someone entertaining, trustworthy, and often right" (Jung). The nine stories collected here were originally printed in the magazines Super Science Stories and Astounding Science Fiction between 1940 and 1950. Gia Jung, "Our AI Overlord: The Cultural Persistence of Isaac Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics in Understanding Artificial Intelligence", Emergence, 5 June 2018. Octavo. Original red cloth, spine lettered in black, robot design to front cover in black. With dust jacket. Lightly bumped; jacket slightly creased, spine sunned as usual, else bright and unclipped: a near-fine copy in near-fine jacket.

Zustand: Near Fine. First Edition or Armed Services Edition. Though the publishing history is murky, this is assumed to be either an example from the publisher's short foray into paperback publishing, or an Armed Services edition. First edition, wrappered issue according to Currey; though according to Chalker, Gnome printed 5,000 hardbound copies in 1950, and an additional 2,500 were printed in 1951 as the trade paperback "Armed Forces Edition." Near Fine with light creases to wraps and light chipping at edges, light foxing to textblock edge and contents heavily tanned. Exceedingly scarce in this format, much more uncommon than the hardcover edition.

First edition, first printing, signed by the author on the front free endpaper, scarce thus. Asimov's landmark story collection includes "Liar!", which coined the term "robotics", and "Runaround", in which he first proposed the Three Laws of Robotics. The work's remarkable influence has extended from science fiction to cybernetics, posing increasingly prescient questions on what distinguishes man from machine. These nine stories were printed in the magazines Super Science Stories and Astounding Science Fiction between 1940 and 1950 prior to their first appearance here in book form. Anatomy of Wonder 3.20; Currey, p. 17; Locke I, p. 24. Housed in a red quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. Bump to ends and corners, browning to rear endpapers; jacket unclipped, spine faded as usual, otherwise bright, moderate rubbing with one or two nicks, in lovely condition: a fine copy in near-fine jacket.
