In den Warenkorbsewn PAPERBACK, fresh attractive copy, appears unused. WILTSHIRE, GAIL. A spatial reading of Ilse Aichinger's novel Die grössere Hoffnung. Würzburg: Königshausen & Neumann, 2015, 147pp., . Aichinger, Ilse, 1921-2016. - As theoretical underpinnings she incorporates a number of hypotheses by contemporary cultural theorists. She refers to M.M. Bakhtin's concept of "chronotopicity", that is, "time space" in The Dialogic Imagination (1981), and Michel Foucault's treatise on heterotopic otherness in "Different Spaces" (1967) and Discipline and Punish. The Birth of the Prison (1975). Furthermore, she draws on Aleida Assmann's theory of memory outlined in Cultural Memory and Western Civilisation (1999) to interrogate the nexus between space and memory in Aichinger's novel. Finally, Foucault's seminal discourse "What Is an Author?" (1969) contributes to an analysis of (auto-)biographical space. The application of the theories of Bakhtin, Foucault, and Assmann to this novel breaks new ground. - Apart from a detailed reading of Aichinger's novel, this volume also includes interviews with individuals who are close to Aichinger, personally and professionally: Helga Michie née Aichinger, Ruth and Hugh Rix, Dr. Christine Ivanovic and Reto Ziegler. ISBN 9783826057076.

Neuware - These essays reveal Mikhail Bakhtin (1895-1975)--known in the West largely through his studies of Rabelais and Dostoevsky--as a philosopher of language, a cultural historian, and a major theoretician of the novel. The Dialogic Imagination presents, in superb English translation, four selections from Voprosy literatury i estetiki (Problems of literature and esthetics), published in Moscow in 1975. The volume also contains a lengthy introduction to Bakhtin and his thought and a glossary of terminology.

In den WarenkorbBuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - These essays emerge from different crucial and complex conflicts: from the memory of a bishop, Bartolome de las Casas, urging the pope of his time to cleanse the church of complicity with violence, oppression, and slavery; from the lament and defiance of so many Middle Eastern women, victims of male domination and too many wars; from the voices bursting out from the colonial margins that dare to question and transgress the norms and laws imposed by colonizers and conquerors; from the emerging and diverse theological disruptions of traditional orthodoxies and rigid dogmatisms; from the denial of human rights to immigrant communities, living in the shadows of opulent societies; from the use of the sacred Hebrew Scriptures to displace and dispossess the indigenous peoples of Palestine. The essays belong to different intellectual genres and conceptual crossroads and are thus illustrative of the dialogic imagination that the Russian intellectual Mikhail Bakhtin considered basic to any serious intellectual enterprise. They are also the literary sediment of years of sharing lectures, dialogues, and debates in several academic institutions in the United States, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Malaysia, Switzerland, Germany, and Palestine.

In den WarenkorbBuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - In the politically fluid landscape of modern America, Kurt Vonnegut offers his readers a mirror of cultural self-reflection. Through his personal experiences, he encourages his readers to acknowledge their perceptions of society and ideology as illusionary, allowing them the freedom to recreate a better world. Vonnegut's novels are as relevant today as they were in post-war America, a call for people to allow America to become a beacon of humanity, the role it was always meant to fulfill. This book focuses on Kurt Vonnegut's novels Player Piano, Cat's Cradle, and Slaughterhouse-Five, exploring the themes of technology, religion, and war through the literary theories of Mikhail Bakhtin. It concentrates on Bakhtin's carnivalesque inversion from Rabelais and His World and his theoretical perspectives on the text as a site of struggle from The Dialogic Imagination. 'Emma Saggers' far-reaching application of Bakhtin's theories of the Carnivalesque to the fiction of Kurt Vonnegut is an astute realisation of the possibilities of both. Using the theory as an illuminating lens while keeping the fiction front and centre, Vonnegut's work is given the kind of sophisticated, incisive attention it deserves but does not always get. Now more than ever, we need the insights and deep humanity of Vonnegut, and Emma Saggers' study is an ideal critical accompaniment to reading and rereading this much-loved but still under-appreciated American writer.'-Owen Robinson, Senior Lecturer, Department of Literature Film and Theatre Studies, University of Essex, United Kingdom.
