Jahrhundert lässt sich in Italien die Entstehung einer Art Hofkultur beobachten. Vorangetrieben wird diese Entwicklung durch die zunehmende Urbanisierung, die in ihrem Kern die von Jacob Burckhardt in seinem Werk Die Kultur der Renaissance in Italien analysierten sozialstrukturellen Veränderungen nach sich zieht. Das Milieu, in dem sich dieser Zivilisierungsprozess abspielte, war neben den unteren Schichten, in denen sich dieser Prozess jedoch Standes bedingt andersgeartet vollzog, vornehmlich der adlige Hof. Die höfische Kultur förderte neben Kunst und Wissenschaft auch die Entwicklung von neuartigen Verhaltensnormen und standardisierten Sitten, die weit über die höfischen Grenzen hinweg eine Art Modellcharakter erhalten.Durch den konzentrierten Reichtum des italienischen Adels im 14. und 15. Jahrhundert kommt es so zu einer Kunst- und Kulturrevolution, die sich an der Antike und dem klassischen Ideal orientiert und diese Vorbilder mit Hilfe schöpferischer Kreativität weiter zu entwickeln sucht. Diese Revolution gründete sich auf die Gedanken und Ideen des Humanismus des Altertums mit der Folge einer Individualisierung des Menschenbildes in der Renaissance. Diese Wiederbelebung der klassischen Humanitas wird damit bewusst als 'geistig-kultureller Niedergang eines barbarischen Mittelalters' verstanden. Nichtsdestotrotz ist es überraschend, dass gerade die höfische Kultur mit ihrer aristokratischen Hierarchie die Emanzipation des Individuums nicht behinderte, sondern ganz im Gegenteil die freie, persönliche Selbstbestimmung noch begünstigte.Eloquentestes Zeugnis dieses Lebensgefühls ist der Cortegiano, dessen Autor Baldassare Castiglione dieses Ideal zum einen selbst vorlebte und zum anderen in seinem gleichnamigen Werk skizziert. Auf der anderen Seite steht der Principe, dem der Cortegiano dient. Der Vergleich der beiden Bücher verspricht deshalb sehr interessant zu werden.Das Buch vom Hofmann, Il Libro del Cortegiano von Baldassare Castiglione (\*1478 bei Mantua, 1529 in Toledo) entstand zwischen 1508 und 1516, wurde aber erst im Jahre 1528 veröffentlicht und bereits innerhalb der darauf folgenden einhundert Jahre in fast alle europäischen Sprachen übersetzt. Der Erfolg ist nahezu unvergleichlich und das Buch besitzt sogar heute noch Aktualität hinsichtlich Wertevorstellungen und Verhaltensnormen.
