First edition in English, first printing, presentation copy signed and additionally inscribed by Burroughs and Gysin on the half-title, "[Burroughs:] For Jonathan Williams and Tom Meyer. With pleasant memories of London, all the best, William Dec. 4, 1978 [Gysin:] Yours in Present Time, Brion Gysin". This is a review copy, with the publisher's slip loosely inserted. Jonathan William was a Black Mountain College alumnus, poet, publisher, and photographer; his partner Tom Meyer was a poet and translator. In 1951, Williams founded the Jargon Society to publish the work of neglected poets. It remains one of the oldest and most esteemed small presses in the USA and has been central to the development of the literary avant-garde, publishing writers such as Charles Olson, Kenneth Patchen, Denise Levertov, and Paul Metcalf. The Third Mind was first published in French by Flammarion in 1976 as Oeuvre croisée. Not in Maynard & Miles. Octavo. Black and white illustrations throughout.
