In seltenen Fällen lässt sich auch noch der geheimnisvolle, exotische Orient als romantisches Sujet verstehen. Spätestens bei grausamen Massakern und zelebrierten Frauenmorden hört die Toleranz jedoch langsam auf und niemand wirdmehr ernsthaft von Romantik sprechen ¿ eher sogar vom genauen Gegenteil.Das Gemälde 'Der Tod des Sardanapal' zeigt aber eben diesen Inhalt. Gemalt wurde es wiederum von Eugène Delacroix (1798-1863), der als Vorreiter der romantischen Malerei im restaurativen Frankreich angesehenen wird. Wie sich dieses düstere und kontroverse Bild nun genau einordnen lässt, soll im Folgenden näher behandelt werden.Die Forschung über dieses Gemälde beginnt genau genommen bereits mit Delacroix' Zeitgenossen. Der Skandalgehalt des 'Sardanapal' führte direkt nach der Ausstellung im Salon zu massiver Kritik und vor allem zu Unverständnis, welches für über 100 Jahre das Interesse des Publikums, aber auch der Forschung zügelte und konsequent auf andereWerke Delacroix' ablenkte. Erst in den letzten Jahrzehnten wandte sich die Kunstwissenschaft wieder dem einstmals verschmähten Bild zu, allerdings auch nur abgeschwächt. Das Hauptaugenmerk der Forschung liegt überwiegend auf derSchilderung und Einordnung seines Gesamtwerks, auf seiner Farbtheorie oder auch auf seiner Darstellung des Orients vor und nach seiner Marokkoreise.Um das Gemälde erfassen und einordnen zu können, erfolgen nun zunächst eine Bildbeschreibung, danach kurze Erläuterungen zum Aufbau, dem Entstehungskontext sowie dem Forschungsbefund. Im darauf folgenden Kapitel wird die Person und die Legende des Sardanapals an sich dargelegt. Dann konzentriert sich die Arbeit auf dieInterpretation und die Deutungsansätze. Es sollen nacheinander das zeitgenössische Frankreich mit den beiden Schulen des Klassizismus und der Romantik, der Begriff des Orientalismus, ein Vergleich des Schriftstellers Lord Byron und dessen gleichnamigem Drama mit Delacroix' 'Sardanapal' sowie abschließend die Symbolfigur des Dandy unddie Darstellung des Erhabenen im Gemälde behandelt werden. Eine Zusammenfassung samt Fazit rundet die Arbeit ab.
