In den Warenkorb2 parts in 1 volume. First and only edition of an important and richly illustrated work on the Peloponnese and the Adriatic Sea, with descriptions of Venice, the Dalmatian coast, and several of the major Greek Islands. The work is notable for its fine plates, after Vincenzo Maria Coronelli (1650-1718), Jacob van Meurs (ca. 1620-1679), Joan Blaeu (ca. 1598-1673) and others. It was probably published in response to the Morean War (1684-1699), the sixth conflict between the Republic of Venice and the Ottoman Empire, in which Venice took control of the Peloponnese peninsula (also known as Morea). The maps show various locations from this battle. The Dutch physician and scholar Olfert Dapper (1639-1689) wrote several highly esteemed descriptions of various parts of the world, based on travel narratives from the late seventeenth century. With remarkable frequency, he published historical and geographical works on Africa, Asia (India, China, and the Dutch East Indies), the Middle East (Palestine, Persia), and the Mediterranean, all richly illustrated. The present work is one of his last. He never travelled himself, but read widely, and the numerous sources he cites throughout his texts testify to the wealth of knowledge he possessed. Some of the authors he cites in the present work are: Herodotus, Pliny the Elder, Ptolemy, Plutarch and John Chrystostom. The present copy bears the royal arms of the United Kingdom on the front board, with the text "Military Depot" in a banner above. It must have been part of the collection of a British military regiment, but it is unknown which one. The work may have been bought by the British army as a source on the region. The page numbers in the first part have been corrected by an 18th-century hand. The work has been rebacked, with the original spine laid down, the leather is slightly rubbed and scratched, somewhat affecting the clarity of the gold-tooling. Page 48 of the first part has some loss of material in the fore-edge margin, without affecting the text, the plate of Zante has been bound upside down. Overall in very good condition.l Navari, L., Cyprus and the Levant: Rare books from the Sylvia Ioannou Foundation I, p. 117; STCN 841792194 (17 copies including 2 incomplete); Tiele 303; USTC 1821186 (15 copies, same as STCN); Zacharakis 824-828. With an engraved title-page, 2 folding maps, 9 double-page plates and maps, 6 single-page plates and 29 half-page engravings in the text. Further with a woodcut ornament on the typographical title-page (printed in red and black) and 4 woodcut initials. Pages: [8], "168" [= 264]; [12], "164" [= 181], [6], [2 blank] pp.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition of Dapper's Asia Minor and Mesopotamia; a German edition followed in 1681. In common with contemporaries such as John Ogilby, the Dutch physician Olfert Dapper (1639-1689) never travelled to visit the lands he wrote about, instead compiling extant translations and other eye-witness accounts to produce lavish and encyclopaedic books for the northern European readership. The work of Dapper and others thus both reflected and directed growing public interest in distant places and foreign peoples. Dapper was meticulous in using hundreds of published sources and several unpublished ones for each of his books; he did not lift whole passages from one book, but often based a single paragraph on two or three different sources. In this sense his work is indispensible to modern scholarship, as it reflects manuscript sources that have since been lost. Central to the contemporary appeal of Dapper's works were the engravings, which ranged beyond the geographical interest served by maps and views. Clothing, eating habits, religious beliefs, court ceremonies, and judicial practices were all subjects discussed by travellers and missionaries in letters and travel books and were reproduced by Dapper. The plates (here in excellent strong impressions) include superb views of Baghdad, Abydos, Ephesus, Smyrna, Magnesia, Muscat, and Mecca. Among the half-plates are attractive botanical subjects, including the coffee tree (p. 62 in the second part). The Atabey Library copy counts 16 plates but one of these is an additional botanical plate not called-for in the collation. Aracadian Library 8342; Atabey 322; this edition not in Blackmer; Macro 805. Folio (317 x 194 mm) in 2 parts. Letterpress title printed in red and black; engraved pictorial title, 12 double-page engraved view (2 also folding), 3 double-page maps, 22 half-page plates. Contemporary vellum, title inked on spine, three-line blind tooled border on sides enclosing a large arabesque blind stamp, red speckled edges. Bookplate of Heyse-Tak; front board has sprung, 19th-century repair to fore edge of engraved title. An attractive copy in a contemporary binding.

Commelin incorporateds two earlier essays by his father Izaak Commelin, who had breifly described Amsterdam in a 1665 book about France, Spain and other countries. As a respected clergyman in Amsterdam, Casparus Commelin had access to the old letters and documents in the Amsterdam archives, which proved useful in completing his work. Commelin died in 1693 and the first edition was published posthumously in that year and reissued in 1694. The beautiful and very clear engravings in the text are all taken from the work of Van Domselaar, while some of the engraved plates were newly made for this work. These include 9 engravings by Luyken. Others are copies of illustrations in publications by Dapper, Brandt and Bor.Bookplate of Vallis Dei, and some library stamps throughout. With a richly engraved allegorical frontispiece representing Africa, a large folding engraved map of Africa (445 x 560 cm), 14 double-page engraved maps of parts of Africa and the adjacent islands, 27 double-page and 1 larger folding engraved plates and views, and 55 half-page engraved views, plans, illustrations of costumes, animals, plants, etc. in the text. All illustrations hand-coloured by a contemporary hand. Contemporary vellum at a later date with elaborate blind-tooled decorations, including oriental portraits. With 2 decorated brass clasps, signed B-I. First impression of the second, much enlarged Dutch edition of Dapper's famous description of Africa. Olfert Dapper (1636-89) was celebrated by his contemporaries for his descriptions of faraway lands. He began his writing career with a description of Amsterdam, where he spent his whole life. His description of the entire continent of Africa and its islands was first published in 1668, which was still early in his career. It is now accepted as his best work and was translated into German and English in 1670, and into French in 1686. The present second edition was thoroughly revised. - Dapper's attention was drawn mainly to the Islamic North of Africa, and he gives extensive descriptions of the area between Morocco and Egypt (with a magnificent illustration of pyramids) and the Ethiopian Empire (Abyssinia). He maps the whole of Africa, Egypt and Ethiopia including the Arabian Peninsula as far as the Gulf and the Red Sea. He includes an impressive double-page plate with a view of a Hajj caravan from Cairo to Mecca. - Of special interest are the book's abundant, exact and finely executed illustrations - especially as they are here coloured by a contemporary hand, a highly unusual feature for this work. The illustrations include engraved maps of the states, provinces, and towns, engraved plates and a large number of engravings in the text representing the residents, the lesser-known plants and animals. - Dapper's interdisciplinary approach was innovative. He compiled his description of Africa from various sources, including unpublished Dutch reports and eye-witness accounts, most of them now lost or scarce, which lends this early work on Africa an enduring historical value. - Faded manuscript title on spine. Covers and spine slightly rubbed, clasps reattached, new ties. Otherwise in very good condition. - Cox I, 361. Gay, L'Afrique, 219. Mendelssohn I, 413f. Tiele 298.

In den WarenkorbNo Binding. Zustand: Very Good. Original copperplate engraving, 35.5 x 27 cm. Bilingual legends in Dutch and French in both upper corners. Slight centrefold stain. Otherwise, a very good copy. The map captures the region's exotic allure with its baroque title cartouche and detailed illustrations of ships and architecture. The map presents a detailed depiction of the capital of the semi-autonomous Ottoman Regency of Tunisia, showcasing its layout, prominent fortifications, key landmarks such as the Carthage Gate and a ruined castle, and its harbour. At the entrance, Dutch and Portuguese trade ships, along with corsair activity on the Barbary Coast, are depicted, emphasizing the city's urban planning and maritime infrastructure in the 1600s. A strategic Mediterranean port under Ottoman influence, Tunis was a key hub for European traders and diplomats. Dapper's map captures Europe's geopolitical and commercial interests in North Africa, illustrating the region's significance in maritime trade and diplomacy. The map originates from the first French edition of Description of Africa (Naukeurige Beschrijvinge der Afrikaensche Gewesten or Accurate Descriptions of the African Regions), a Dutch ethnographic work published in 1668. Written by geographer Olfert Dapper (1636-1689), the book provides a comprehensive account of the regions of Africa known to Europeans in the mid-17th century. It was first published in Amsterdam by Jacob van Meurs in 1668, followed by a second edition in 1676. Translations soon followed: a German edition in 1670, an English edition, often attributed to John Ogilby, titled Africa in 1670, and a French translation in 1676. The illustrations of North and Central Africa in the work were likely inspired by the paintings of Dutch Baroque artist Abraham Willaerts (1603-1669). Willaerts, known primarily for his maritime and harbor scenes, accompanied the Dutch expedition against Portuguese Angola in 1641. His firsthand observations may have influenced the visual representation of African landscapes, coastal cities, and naval encounters in the book. Dapper never personally visited Africa; instead, he compiled his work using accounts from Dutch and Portuguese explorers, traders, and missionaries, as well as existing maps, including those from the Blaeu family archives. His descriptions, while often romanticized, provide valuable insights into European perceptions of Africa in the 17th century.
