Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. One of the most compelling and durable of the great classical myths is that concerning Dido and Aeneas, which throughout the centuries has been appropriated and misappropriated for political and artistic ends. It offers much material for such uses: the representation of a city (Carthage) as an exotic encapsulation of the East: Dido's lack of constancy and the paradox of Aeneas, who has already abandoned his wife in Troy, but who, in abandoning Dido, remains true to Rome; the seduction of women in literature; the reworking of the myth to reflect Restoration politics. In this book, ten contributors from the fields of fine art, history, English literature, classics and music examine the myth in its complexity and ambiguity. Their findings indicate emphatically that Purcell's opera is very far from being merely a quaint baroque entertainment. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. The Aeneid is Virgil's Masterpiece. His epic poem recounts the story of Rome's legendary origins from the ashes of Troy and proclaims her destiny of world dominion. This optimistic vision is accompanied by an undertow of sadness at the price that must be paid in human suffering to secure Rome's future greatness. The tension between the public voice of celebration and the tragic private voice is given full expression both in the doomed love of Dido and Aeneas, and in the fateful clash between the Trojan leader and the Italian hero, Turnus. Hailed by T.S. Eliot as 'the classic of all Europe', Virgil's Aeneid has enjoyed a unique and enduring influence on European literature, art and politics for the past two thousand years. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Aeneas the True - son of Venus and of a mortal father - escapes from Troy after it is sacked by the conquering Greeks. He undergoes many trials and adventures on a long sea journey, from a doomed love affair in Carthage with the tragic Queen Dido to a sojourn in the underworld. All the way, the hero is tormented by the meddling of the vengeful Juno, Queen of the Gods and a bitter enemy of Troy, but his mother and other gods protect Aeneas from despair and remind him of his ultimate destiny - to found the great city of Rome. Reflecting the Roman peoples' great interest in the 'myth' of their origins, Virgil (70-19 BC) made the story of Aeneas glow with a new light in his majestic epic. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Good. The death of Henry Purcell in November 1695, aged 36, was one of the great losses in musical history. He was one of England's most original and brilliant composers, and his equal would never come again. Of Purcell the man very little is known. His personality has to be reconstructed through the age in which in which he lived, the circumstances of his professional life, the men and women who knew him, and above all through his music. It is here that Robert King has a unique advantage. As one of Britain's leading baroque conductors and director of The King's Consort, he has a long experience in performing Purcell. His fascination for Purcell's music began when he was a 12-year old chorister: he is now regarded as one of the world's leading experts on this remarkable composer. Purcell's genius was recognised early. He became a "Child of the Chapel Royal" when he was only eight or nine years old, and a court musician when he was eighteen, and was thereafter at the centre of London's musical scene. His career spanned three reigns: Charles II, James II and William and Mary. Each had its own exciting demands, and Purcell produced an endless stream of odes, anthems, ceremonial music and songs. In addition to his official duties, he also wrote a vast amount of music for the theatre, including semi-operas like The Fairy Queen and King Arthur, as well as England's first true opera, Dido and Aeneas. Robert King weaves a narrative, bringing together politics (always in the forefront of Purcell's fortunes), religion, society and the theatre. Relating all this to the state of music at the time - instruments, techniques, foreign influences, formal innovations - he has produced a portrait of Henry Purcell to herald the tercentenary. The book has been read but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact and the cover is intact. Some minor wear to the spine.

From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Back cover light-margined, otherwise very good and clean. - From the text: It is a curious fact that Dido, whom most readers know from Vergil for her passionate love of Aeneas, despite her oath of fidelity to her former husband, should be chosen by early Christian writers as a model of chaste widowhood. So eager were the Apologists to preach the merits of this virtue that they preferred an older version of the legend to the one used by Vergil. It is my purpose to show that the Church Fathers were influenced in their treatment of Dido by their rhetorical training and by example collections in use in the schools of rhetoric. In Part II of this essay some account will be given of the persistence in literature of the tradition wherein her chastity was acclaimed. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.

Paperback. Zustand: Gut. 92 p. In good condition. - Vergil's celebrated romance involves two marvelous creations: Phoenician Dido, the beautiful, passionate, and impulsive ruler of Carthage, and Trojan Aeneas, the refugee from the fall of Troy, a handsome, middle-aged widower with a growing son, valiant, impressionable, fundamentally devout and dutiful, and destined to be the forefather of Rome. Their story is concentrated into Books I and IV of the Aeneid. Shipwrecked through Juno's devices on the shores of Libya (modem Tunisia) while seeking his new home in the West, Aeneas meets Dido, who is engaged in building her new city of Carthage. A young woman recently widowed, and childless, Dido welcomes the Trojans. Her youthfulness, which is in keeping with Mediterranean marriage customs where girls were often married at fifteen or sixteen, increases the pathos of her experience. With divine intervention by Juno and Venus, and smitten by the arrow of Cupid, Dido falls hopelessly in love with Aeneas. Although resistant at the outset to her personal feelings and to divine pressure, Dido finally surrenders to passionate love for Aeneas and his son Ascanius, and to "marriage." When Aeneas is recalled to his mission by Jupiter's command, he sets aside his personal happiness and abandons Dido. The desperate queen begs, threatens, and curses Aeneas, but all in vain. Finally, invoking eternal hatred between Carthage and Rome and summoning an unspecified avenger (whom we recognize as Hannibal), Dido commits suicide. Aeneas encounters her later in Hades, where she is reunited with her former husband, Sychaeus, who had been murdered in Tyre, her Near Eastern home.
