It was first published in the Enciclopedia Italiana of 1932, as the first section of a lengthy entry on 'Fascismo' (Fascism). The entire entry on Fascism spans pages 847-884 of the Enciclopedia Italiana, and includes numerous photographs and graphic images. The Mussolini essay leads off the entry: FASCISMO - Movimento politico italiano creato da Benito Mussolini (v.). DOTTRINA Idee Fondamentali. (the first section of the essay) A second section of the essay is titled: 'Dottrina Politica e sociale.' The Mussolini entry starts on page 847 and ends on 851 with the credit line 'Benito Mussolini.' All subsequent translations of 'The Doctrine of Fascism' are from this work. A key concept of the Mussolini essay was that fascism was a rejection of previous models: 'Granted that the 19th century was the century of socialism, liberalism, democracy, this does not mean that the 20th century must also be the century of socialism, liberalism, democracy. Political doctrines pass; nations remain. We are free to believe that this is the century of authority, a century tending to the 'right', a Fascist century. If the 19th century was the century of the individual (liberalism implies individualism) we are free to believe that this is the 'collective' century, and therefore the century of the State.'.

Fu insieme a Benedetto Croce uno dei maggiori esponenti del neoidealismo ed un importante protagonista della cultura italiana nella prima metà del XX secolo. Giovanni Gentile è il padre della riforma della scuola nella quale hanno studiato generazioni di italiani. Filosofo, senatore, ministro, intellettuale militante fu mosso dall'intento di 'trovare un percorso ideale e storico unitario in grado di dare agli italiani un nuovo senso di appartenenza a una cultura comune e condivisa'. Un percorso intrapreso dapprima con Croce, con 'La critica' e numerose iniziative editoriali, poi con il fascismo di cui fu il costruttore, insieme a Mussolini, e il massimo organizzatore culturale. Dopo l'8 settembre diede la sua adesione alla Repubblica sociale e rimase a Firenze dove fu ucciso da un gruppo di partigiani nell'aprile del 1944. 156 pag. Size: 20cmx12,5cm.

(8), 133, (3) pp. The scarce first edition in book form, fourth thousand (i.e. with mention of "quinto migliaio" on title-page), of the key political document of fascist philosophical thought - the publication in which the ideological cornerstones of The National Fascist Party (Partito Nazionale Fascista, PNF) are officially established. "The Doctrine of Fascism", the first part of which was actually written by Giovanni Gentile, who is not mentioned as the author, was originally published in the Italian Encyclopedia Vol. 14, 1932, as the first section of a lengthy entry on "Fascismo" (Fascism). Gioacchino Volpe's "History on the Fascist Movement" was also published in that volume, as an appendix to Mussolini's entry, and immediately after the Encyclopaedia-publication, the two pieces were published together, in the first book form of the work, under the title "La Dottrina del Fascismo. Con una Storia del Movimento Fascista di Giocchino Volpe", by the "Biblioteca della Enciclopedia Italiana", which undertook the separate publishing of the most important entries of the Encyclopaedia. Mussolini added a series of notes that appered for the first time in the first publication in book-form. The present copy bears the imprint "Quinto migliaio" at the foot of the title-page. We have been unable to determine whether this actually means that the issues of the first edition were in fact divided into thousands and this thus the fourth thousand, or whether, as would have been common practice with eg. propagandist literature, the "fourth thousand" was a way to boost the public perception of the immediate reception of the work. No matter whther the "Quinto migliaio" was a boosting gimmick or not, the work ended up being published in enormous numbers after its initial publication in 1932. Not only did it appear in several newspapers already in 1932, it was also published again in book form already in 1933 and kept appearing in different versions, with other additions on the subject, throughout the following decades. It was also translated into numerous other languages and came to have a tremendous impact on the spreading of fascist thought. This magnum opus of Italian fascism came to have the greatest impact upon Italian politics and the entire political climate of Europe. È giunto il momento di smontare uno dei luoghi comuni più duraturo della storia repubblicana, ovvero quello secondo il quale il fascismo è morto e sepolto da fine aprile 1945. Già nel secondo dopoguerra, infatti, la dottrina della continuità dello Stato riportò ai vertici di prefetture e polizia personaggi di schietta fede fascista. Poi si è permessa la ricostituzione di un partito fascista come il Movimento sociale italiano che, tra manganello e doppiopetto, ha avuto un ruolo negli scontri di piazza e ha contribuito perfino all'elezione di presidenti della Repubblica (da Antonio Segni a Giovanni Leone). E ancora, tra la fine degli anni Sessanta e il successivo decennio, le convulse fasi della strategia della tensione, con trame nere e stragi su cui la magistratura non ha fatto chiarezza, lasciando impuniti i responsabili delle sanguinose attività terroristiche. Infine, al superamento del MSI in ottiche postfasciste hanno corrisposto riemersioni e soprassalti di destra radicale. La nascita dellÂ'Associazione provoco' divergenti reazioni fra i vertici del Fascismo divisi fra chi contestava la legittimazione di questa, e fra chi, soprattutto l'anima piu' marcatamente sociale, plaudi' a tale iniziativa. Complete with frontispiece portrait and 7 photographic plates. Frontispiece portrait includes the tissue cover. Faint dust along top edge of text block, solid binding, a bright, near fine example. In the publisher's scarce first state dust jacket, $3.50 price on front flap, multiple closed tears, some loss along top edge of back panel, Japanese tissue repair to verso, a very good example. Signed on the title page by Benito Mussolini. Includes a letter of provenance from the Consolato Generale d'Italia, delivering this signed copy of "My Autobiography," and thanking "E.T. Kitzenberger" from the Charles Scribner's Company for his help in publishing the book. This work was dictated to Richard Washburn Child and Luigi Barzini, Jr., who both served as ghostwriters on the project. This work of propaganda was aimed at an American audience, and was unpublished in Italy until 1971. The work was first serialized in The Saturday Evening Post, from May-October 1928. The first edition was published by Charles Scribner's Sons in 1928, followed by the first English edition in 1936, based off manuscripts held at the Houghton Library at Harvard.
