In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: As New. Limited Edition Facsimile. Still shrinkwrapped! 116 pages in laminated boards, together with a 40pp. DUTCH TEXT with English translation booklet. This facsimile is limited to 1000 copies. Jazz was originally published in 1959, and since then it has become one of the most collectible photography books of the mid-twentieth century, ranking alongside the more widely known work of Christer Stromholm and Robert Frank. Like William Claxton's Jazzlife and Dennis Stock's Jazz Street, van der Elsken's entry into the niche of music photography appeared just before the decisive moment when rock cemented its place as the popular music of choice for young people. It is perhaps the most successful of the era's many photographic attempts to capture the essence of jazz, because it is more than just a succession of musicians' portraits or even a documentary record of performance, but a book that visually echoes the music itself. Van Der Elsken's work is that of both an authentic jazz fan and an experienced creator of photography books, who improvises in ways perfectly hooked in to both fields. Vince Aletti, writing in Artforum in 2000, said, "His jazz photos, made without flash in Amsterdam nightclubs, are gorgeous fields of grain, as moody and soulful as a sax riff," and called Jazz "utterly original." This special limited edition is made from a copy of the first edition found in van der Elsken's library, in which the name of each performing artist--Ella, Louis, Chet--was written on every page in the artist's hand in silver ink. 9783865214010 Small Square 8vo Limited Edition.

In den Warenkorbhardcover. Zustand: Perfetto (Mint). . Perfetto (Mint). . . . Book.

In den WarenkorbAmsterdam, Landshoff, 1985. Small 8vo (15.1 x 10.6 cm). 92 pp.; numerous black-and-white photos. Original laminated pictorial paperbound. = An archetypal work by the Dutch photographer and cinematographer Ed van der Elsken (1925-1990). Signed and illustrated in ink on the title page, "1985 Ed van der Elsken", below a simple flower motif. "His imagery provides quotidian, intimate and autobiographic perspectives on the European zeitgeist spanning the period of the Second World War into the nineteen-seventies in the realms of love, sex, art, music (particularly jazz), and alternative culture. He described his camera as 'infatuated', and said: 'I'm not a journalist, an objective reporter, I'm a man with likes and dislikes'." (Wikipedia). La Grande Parade was Edy de Wilde's farewell exhibition as director of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam in 1984. Highlights from the post-1940 painting were exhibited until mid-April, 1985. The exhibition was visited by around 400,000 people. There were masterpieces by such artists as Karel Appel (featured on the front cover of Van der Elsken's book), Francis Bacon, Georg Baselitz, Max Beckmann, Georges Braque, Alberto Giacometti, Jasper Johns, Asger Jorn, Ellsworth Kelly, Anselm Kiefer, Yves Klein, Willem de Kooning, Fernand Léger, Sol LeWitt, Robert Mangold, Henri Matisse, Joan Miró, Piet Mondrian, Barnett Newman, Pablo Picasso, Sigmar Polke, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Frank Stella, Cy Twombly and others. At this event, Van der Elsken acted as journalist, asking smart questions and noting remarkable quotes whilst photographing. Slight wear to front joint, otherwise an excellent, clean copy. Added: a second clean and unmarked copy, in also in near mint state.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition, first printing, Dutch text. "The 1950s constituted a golden age for jazz music. The decade was also renowned for classic small-camera photography, much of it as rough and ready as the best experimental jazz. The two art forms combine to perfection in Ed van der Elsken's gem of a book, Jazz. The result is not just a succession of musician's portraits, or even a documentary record of performance, but a book that visually echoes the music itself. Other photographers, perhaps closer to the jazz community, have made books on the subject, but Van der Elsken's is the work of an authentic jazz fan and maker of authentic photobooks" (Parr & Badger). Superb copy of this influential work. Parr & Badger, I, p.246; Roth p.156. Small square octavo. Over 100 illustrations from Elsken's photographs. Original photographic glossy laminated boards, black endpapers. With the glassine jacket. A spectacularly well-preserved copy, slightly shrinkage of the glassine which is faintly browned and mildly crumpled at the corners, but the boards retain an almost freakishly high gloss, near fine.
