Very good dust jacket overall, the only significant flaw being an approx 4" tear to upper front flap. Presumed first edition (unstated). This is another paragraph From Publishers Weekly: The specter of Edgar Allan Poe hovers, chillingly, over bestseller Fairstein's seventh thriller featuring Manhattan sex crimes prosecutor Alexandra Cooper. Alex's labyrinthine path to a serial killer travels through a lot of forensic evidence and two initially unconnected cases: the Silk Stocking rapist is terrorizing women after a few years' respite and a woman's skeleton is discovered in the wall of an East Village building. Said discovery takes on additional dimension when it's learned that the victim was walled up alive and that the house was once inhabited by Poe. Freelance writer Emily Upshaw appears, at first glance, to be the Silk Stocking rapist's latest victim, but several details feel off to Alex and NYPD detective sidekicks Mike Chapman and Mercer Wallace. Emily, it's determined, is the victim of a copycat, but she does have a tenuous link to Poe and to a secret organization called the Raven Society. These are the puzzle pieces that Alex and company work with, in a tale that develops like the proverbial peeled onion, a layer at a time. Alex, fresh from a breakup, also continues her unconsummated flirtation with Mike. It's a tribute to Fairstein's integrity and her clear, measured prose that the novel never tips into prurience. Her methodical presentation of authentic detail engages reader interest more than narrative flourish or cheap thrills. She's the real deal.

Quarto [26.5 cm] Black cloth over boards, with decorative gilt stamping on the front board. Light bumping to the spine ends and corners at the tips. Some general shelfwear to the dust jacket, with a bit of shallow chipping, soiling to the rear panel, and a few discreet tape mends to the verso. Not often seen with the jacket. With 19 full-page Illustrations in black and white by Ferdinand Huszti Horvath. Horvath (1891-1973) was a Hungarian-born, New York-based sketch artist, who was active in film from the early 1920s to early 1940s. Notably, he worked as a sketch artist for Walt Disney from 1933 to 1937, bringing a European style to the Disney films. He worked on many Disney shorts, including Salt Water Taffy (1930). He is perhaps best remembered for his uncredited work on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937). Horvath's enthusiasm for Poe's masterpiece began when he was introduced to it as a schoolboy, but it was not until the artist's captivity in Russia during the First World War that the idea of an illustrated edition evolved into a series of rough outline sketches. Horvath is featured in John Canemaker's book, "Before the Animation Begins: The Art and Lives of Disney Inspirational Sketch Artists.".

In den WarenkorbRare first editions of Poe's two great collections of stories and poems, bound together in the original publisher's cloth. Octavo, original publisher's dark green cloth elaborately stamped in blind with gilt titles to the spine, publisher's advertisements at rear of each volume which are most often lacking with both volumes bound together. Wiley and Putnam issued both titles separately in paper wrappers, but bound the two together for additional appeal to readers. The Raven is bound first in this copy (the order varies); that work is arguably the widest read and best-known in the American canon. Tales includes "The "The Black Cat", "The Fall of the House of Usher", "The Descent Into the Maelstrom" and other tales of horror and adventure, as well as the three Dupin stories contained here for the first time in book form and considered "the first important book of detective stories, the first and greatest, the cornerstone of cornerstones.the highest of all high spots" (Queen's Quorum 1). In very good condition. Tales bears the third issue of the copyright notice. Housed in a custom half morocco and folding chemise slipcase. Rare and desirable in the original publisher's cloth. Poe considered âThe Ravenâ to be his finest poemâ"indeed, he was quoted as saying it was the finest poem ever written. Dedicated to Elizabeth Barrett Barrett and first published by Wiley & Putnam in November 1845 in an edition of roughly 750 copies, The Raven and Other Poems "made Poe's name known both in America and England, and brought him an immortality that by no other means could he have attained" (Robertson, 224).

Scrive Bacigalupo che «the first satisfactory translation of «The raven» and other poems, by Ernesto Ragazzoni, is found in the volume «Edgar Allan Poe: la vita e le opere», edited by Ragazzoni and Federico Garrone (1896). [] Ragazzoni's translations of the poems [] have been widely admired. Gabriele Baldini, writing in the newspaper «Corriere della sera» (February 22, 1968) calls Ragazzoni «the only admirable Italian translator» of the poems». -- La raccolta delle versioni poetiche, aumentata con materiali inediti, fu poi ripubblicata nel 1927 per le cure di Arrigo Cajumi. Called "the most important volume of poetry that had been issued up until that time in America," by Hervey Allen in his Poe biography Israfel vol. 2, p. Specially bound in a black mourning binding with provenance of Fremont (1824-1902). She was a woman of letters and writer, whose work primarily focused on the American West. She was heavily active in politics and was an outspoken opponent of slavery. She was the wife of John C. Jessie gifted this to her husband directly after the birth of their first son, Benton Fremont b. July 24, 1848, who sadly died a year later. She likely had this bound later in memoriam of her son as most of the notations, written in her hand, on the endsheets are almost all quotations relating to and about death and tragedy. BAL 16147.
