Salten, used to living beyond his means and always strapped for cash, sold "Bambi" to the Disney Studios in 1933 for a mere 1,000 dollars. - Binding a little sunned along the edges. Paper somewhat brittle as usual; half title beginning to part in the gutter. - Contemporary owner's initials "B.O.W." to front flyleaf. - WG 30.

The first edition of the first translation of Bambi into English. By adding the figures of the two previous German editions and the subscription of the Book of the Month Club for 50,000 copies (which they eventually sold and far more so), Simon & Schuster arrived at the statement that their printing was of the "75th-85th Thousand." This copy has a later issue dust jacket with Bambi within a wreath, and is enclosed in a slipcase which matches in main elements the design of the dust jacket. The back panel of this jacket prints press opinions. This gift box was presumably meant for the Christmas season business and is extremely scarce. The ensemble is on the whole very good indeed, with very minimal wear to the slipcase. Previous owner's name in red pencil on front free endpaper, pencil color mostly blends in with the trees in the design, a couple of pages have a thumbnail-sized stain in the middle of the lower edge.

The sequel to Bambi follows the lives of the twin children of Bambi and his mate Faline as they grow from fawns to young adults. Salten wrote the sequel while living in exile in Switzerland after being forced to flee Nazi-occupied Austria as he was of Jewish heritage. Written in German, the novel was first published in English in the United States in 1939 by Bobbs-Merrill. It was not published in German until the following year. Perri, a squirrel character from one of Salten's earlier novels, makes several appearances in the book. The models for Geno and Gurri were Felix Salten's own children, Paul who was careful and timid, and Anna Katharina, who was merry and optimistic. Salten also included himself as the responsible and humane hunter in the novel.

With an excellent photographic portrait of Salten mounted opposite the title page and inscribed: "for Mr Nelson Craig cordially Felix Salten, 1935". The portrait is the same as that used by Salten on his press card for the Union of Foreign Correspondents in Vienna (issued December 1932). Inscribed photographs of Salten are extremely uncommon.
