His copious memoirs record the byzantine politics of the ages of George II and George III. His works of art and garden history, Anecdotes of Painting (1716-80) and the Essay on Modern Gardening (1780) are of seminal importance, as are his pioneering Gothic novel and drama The Castle ofOtrano (1765) and The Mysterious Mother (1768); while his remarkable remodelling of Strawberry Hill had far-reaching effects on neo-Gothic architecture. He has long been admired for his originality and reviled for his frivolity. This volume charts Walpole's critical reception from the earliest reviews in 1757 to the judgments of the early Victorians up to 1840, striking a balance between sympathetic and hostile responses. Attention is paid to criticism in Europe and especially in France, where Walpole has always been highly regarded. Among the authors represented in this selection are Voltaire, Rousseau, Burke, Gibbon, Chatterton, Fanny Burney, Scott, Byron, Coleridge, Hazlitt and Macaulay. Born and educated in England, Peter Sabor has taught in Canada since 1978 at the University of Calgary and at Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario. The German Baron Grimm was introduced to Parisian literary society through his friendship with Jean Jacques Rousseau and this led to a close association with the Encyclopédistes, in particular with Denis Diderot. In 1753 he began a literary correspondence with various German sovereigns, which he managed to carry on during temporary absences from France with the help of Diderot and Mme d Épinay. The correspondence consisted of two letters a month until 1773, and Grimm eventually counted among his subscribers Catherine II of Russia, Stanislas Poniatowski, King of Poland, and many princes of the smaller German states. His correspondence, which embraces the entire period from 1753 to 1790 was strictly confidential and was not divulged during his lifetime. It is one of the most celebrated of the eighteenth century. "At first [Grimm] contented himself with enumerating the chief current views in literature and art and indicating very slightly the contents of the principal new books, but gradually his criticism became more extended and trenchant, and he touched on nearly every subject political, literary, artistic, social and religious which interested the Parisian society of the time. His notices of contemporaries are somewhat severe, and he exhibits the foibles and selfishness of the society in which he moved; but he was unbiased in his literary judgments, and time has only served to confirm his criticisms. In style and manner of expression he is thoroughly French. He is generally somewhat cold in his appreciation, but his literary taste is delicate and subtle; and it was the opinion of Sainte-Beuve that the quality of his thought in his best moments will compare not unfavourably even with that of Voltaire. "La guerre civile de Geneve" handelt von einem komischen Sittenskandal, der sich in Genf ereignet hatte. Ein Robert Corvelle gab zwar die Liebschaft mit einem Fräulein Cathérine Ferboz zu, nicht aber die Vaterschaft ihres Kindes. Nach alter Sitte sollte er Gott auf Knien um Vergebung bitten, doch er weigerte sich zu knien und kam ins Gefängnis. Schließlich bat er Voltaire um Hilfe, der mehrere lustige Flugschriften und das vorliegende Gedicht zu dem Fall schrieb. In dem Streit zwischen dem gestrengen Rat der Stadt und Corvelle, der die Bürger auf seiner Seite hatte, konnte Voltaire schließlich erfolgreich vermitteln und wünschte sich zur Belohnung die Wiedereröffnung des Theaters, was ihm gewährt wurde. Band am Schluß: "A Sens, De l'Imprimerie de la veuve Tarbé, imprimeur du Roi, 1787." Die Einbände etwas berieben und bestoßen, besonders an den Rücken. Einzelne Deckel mit Bereibungen, bzw. Lederabriß. Mehrere obere Kapitale mit kleineren Fehlstellen, einzelne Ecken bestoßen, jedoch alles in allem trotzdem eine dekorative Reihe. Ein datiertes (1796), gestochenes Portrait nach Cochin, von De Launay le jeune und 23 (recte 24 !) weitere Tafeln von Marillier, gestochen von Baquoy, Borgnet, Dambrun, Fessard, de Ghendt, Giraud l'aîné, Hubert, Le Villain, Maillet, Patas und Thomas. Eine Tafel, die in Band 2 zur Seite 377 gebunden werden sollte, wurde wohl vom Buchbinder aus Anstandsgründen "vergessen" und fehlt seitdem spurlos (liegt aber als Kopie bei). Auf dem vorderen fliegenden Vorsatz des ersten Bandes verso ein längerer, zeitgenössischer handschriftlicher Eintrag, wohl Inventar eines Sammlers, zeitgenössischer Besitzvermerk auf dem Schmutztitel recto. Auf den Seiten xvii und xviii des ersten Bandes, der "Notice" zum Inhalt der einzelnen Bände mit zeitgenössischen handschriftlichen Ergänzungen. Ansonsten sind die Seiten, bis auf einige papierbedingte Bräunungen und einige wenige Lesespuren sehr sauber. An einigen wenigen Stellen im unteren weißen Rand mit kleinem Einriß oder minimaler Fehlstelle und/ oder Knicken, wohl produktionsbedingt. Auf den Innendeckeln das Exlibris von Vicco von Bülow-Schwante. Diese recht seltene, erste Gesamtausgabe gliedert sich in vier Abteilungen, aufgeteilt auf 12 Bände: I "Romans de Chevalerie" (Ritterromane). II Historiettes, Contes, Nouvelles, etc. (Histörchen, Märchen, Novellen) III Contes orientaux et féeries (Orientalische Märchen, Feengeschichten). IV Facéties (Possen und Schwänke). Caylus was born to an old noble family and was exposed to the privileges that aristocratic life offered. He traveled as a boy with the French ambassador to Constantinople and later to Italy and Asia Minor. He spent time in the military as a successful officer, but at the death of Louis XIV in 1715, he resigned his commission to devote himself to art. In 1716, he visited the perilous ancient sites of Smyrna, Ephesos, Colophon and Troad, seldom visited by Europeans. Returning to Paris permanently in 1719, he dabbled in engraving, and through the wealthy collector Pierre Crozat (1661-1740), met the painter Antoine Watteau (1684-1721). Caylus was exceedingly close to the artist, collecting the infamous "morceaux," (clandestine, perhaps erotic drawings of Watteau, now destroyed), and engaging in generally dissipate activities with the artist and others. Caylus' own renderings included the Roman coins and gems in the royal collection. He was admitted to the Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres and the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture in 1731. His graphic work continued to document the major ancient monuments in France. Caylus assisted the careers of Hubert Robert (1733-1808) and Joseph-Marie Vien (1716-1809) by advising their ancient landscapes. Between 1744 and 1765, Caylus lectured at the Académie des inscriptions on ancient art techniques and processes. He also used this position to advocate a return to history painting. Using Pliny's account of encaustic painting, Caylus rediscovered the process, which Vien demonstrated by producing a picture. In 1752, Caylus' Recueil d'antiquités égyptiennes, étruscanes, grecques et romaines, a seven-volume work began to appear. The Recueil addressed the tastes and styles of Greece, Rome, Egypt and the Etruscans in a meaningful way, and like Johann Joachim Winckelmann (q.v.) made use of minor objects, not simply the "great works of ancient art" to create his art history. He helped fund the production Les Ruines des plus beaux monuments de la Grèce, 1758, by Julien-David Le Roy (q.v.), the first book using serious measurements on Greek architecture. Caylus' power in the Academy attracted a bitter enmity with the encyclopedist Denis Diderot (1713-1784) and Diderot's followers. Diderot, the Baron Friedrich Melchior von Grimm (1723-1807), Jean-François Marmontel (1723-1799) and Charles-Nicolas Cochin the Younger (1715-1790) engaged in a bitter attack (well before Diderot's Salon Criticism) portraying Caylus as a privileged hack and a dictator of taste. They argued vigorously against Caylus' theories on the encaustic process (history vindicated Caylus). A long illness gradually took him in 1765, with Mariette at his side. Comte de Caylus' fame rests with his emphasis on the archaeological object itself as the basis for understanding the work. He developed a historical approach to the periods and styles of the objects he wrote about, laying a basis for modern art histories. His works were translated into English and German shortly after their appearances in French.
