Added English title page: 'The Passover Haggadah: its sources and history. With the complete text of the traditional Haggadah, the most ancient Haggadah from the Cairo Genizah and sample pages of manuscript and prnted Haggadot in reproduction. ' Hebrew essays about the history of the Haggadah by Ernst Daniel Goldschmidt (18951972) , "librarian and scholar of Jewish liturgy. Goldschmidt was born in Koenigshuette (now Chorzow, Poland) , where his father was rabbi. He served from 1926 to 1935 as librarian in the Prussian State Library, Berlin. Immigrating to Palestine in 1936, he joined the staff of the Jewish National and University Library (193662) . Goldschmidt prepared critical editions of various liturgical texts. His various Passover Haggadot (with German translation, introduction, and notes, 1936, 1937; Hebrew, 1947, 1960) became very popular; the Haggadah by N. N. Glatzer (Eng. , 1953, 1969) is based on Goldschmidt's work. In 1959 his edition of Maimonides' prayer text appeared; it was followed by Siddur Tefillat Yisrael (two rites) in 1964; Seli? Ot according to both the Lithuanian and Polish rites in 1965; Kinot (liturgy for the Ninth of Av, Polish rite) in 1968; S. D. Luzzatto's introduction to his edition of the Mahzor Roma was reissued by Goldschmidt (1966) with notes and an essay on the Roman rite. His edition of the High Holiday mahzor (1970) , which is a compendium of all the Ashkenazi rites, is of particular importance. " (EJ, 2007) "Through the generations the Passover Haggadah has been one of the most popular works perhaps the most popular in Jewish religious literature. Many recensions, differing from one another to a greater or lesser degree, have been preserved in various manuscripts mostly dating from the 13th to the 15th century, and also in fragments from the Cairo Genizah. These manuscripts originate from all countries in which Jews have lived. Some halakhic works also contain the text of and commentaries on the Haggadah. Others are found in daily or festival prayer books; the majority, however, are separate works for use on the eve of Passover only. These manuscripts have not yet been adequately investigated; only a selected few, particularly the illuminated copies, have engaged the attention of scholars. In the seventh or eighth century the Haggadah was apparently compiled as a separate work by the geonim. " (Ernst Daniel Goldschmidt, 'Haggadah, Passover' entry in EJ, 2007) . Subjects: Judaism - Liturgy - Texts. Passover - Prayer-books and devotions. Seder - Liturgy - Texts. Cairo Genizah. Haggadah. Very good Condition. (HAG-10-23B).

This finely produced Passover Haggadah reproduces the contents (text) from the 1740 Venice Haggadah (see Yaari 116), and contains illustrations reproduced after the original woodcut engravings from 1609 and 1629 Venice Haggadahs (see Yerushalmi, plates 44 and 54 among others). The original 1740 edition had running marginal translation in Italian, here replaced by Spanish. A facsimile of the original title page from that edition is reproduced on the final leaf of this book. The cover illustration of this book, in color, is taken from an image from the famed Sarajevo Haggadah. Pages visually reproduce the look of vellum from the original 1740 edition. Text in Hebrew and Spanish. Binding with light rubbing to extremities. Covers with light sunning and/or damp stains along edges. Interior with inscription to a previous owner on the front free endpapers. Starting at the top of the gutter of the interior back cover, with binding tight overall. Binding in very good-, interior in very good+ condition overall. Scarce.
