Condition : as new. - In Many people across the world know Antonio Negri as an internationally renowned political thinker whose book, Empire, co-authored with Michael Hardt, is an international bestseller. Much less well known is the fact that, up until 1979, Negri was a university professor teaching in Paris and Padova. On April 7th, 1979 he was arrested, charged with the murder of Italian politician Aldo Moro, accused of 17 other murders, of being the head of the Red Brigades and of fomenting insurrection against the state. He has since been absolved of all these accusations, but thanks to the emergency laws in Italy at the time, he was sentenced to 30 years in prison. Then, in July 1983, he was elected as a member of parliament, which meant that he was released from prison after four and a half years of preventive detention. After months of debate, the Lower House decided to strip him of his parliamentary immunity Ð by 300 votes in favour and 293 against. At that point he left Italy for exile in France where he remained until 1997 and continued to maintain his innocence of all the crimes of which he was accused. This book is Negri's diary in which he tells of his imprisonment, trial, the elections, and his escape to and exile in France. Some of these movements have led to impressive gains: the toppling of authoritarian leaders, the furthering of progressive policy, and checks on repressive state forces. They have also been, at times, derided by journalists and political analysts as disorganized and ineffectual, or suppressed by disoriented and perplexed police forces and governments who fail to effectively engage them. Activists, too, struggle to harness the potential of these horizontal movements. Why have the movements, which address the needs and desires of so many, not been able to achieve lasting change and create a new, more democratic and just society? Some people assume that if only social movements could find new leaders they would return to their earlier glory. Where, they ask, are the new Martin Luther Kings, Rudi Dutschkes, and Stephen Bikos? With the rise of right-wing political parties in many countries, the question of how to organize democratically and effectively has become increasingly urgent. Although today's leaderless political organizations are not sufficient, a return to traditional, centralized forms of political leadership is neither desirable nor possible. Instead, as Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri argue, familiar roles must be reversed: leaders should be responsible for short-term, tactical action, but it is the multitude that must drive strategy. In other words, if these new social movements are to achieve meaningful revolution, they must invent effective modes of assembly and decision-making structures that rely on the broadest democratic base. Published by H-ArtHist (March, 2003) Waere eine ausserirdische Revolutionaerin in unseren Raum und unsere Zeit herein transportiert worden, muesste "Empire" von Toni Negri und Michael Hardt ihre Pflichtlektuere fuer unterwegs gewesen sein. Dadurch haette sie schon ein falsches Bild vom revolutionaeren Potential bekommen, das sie auf der Erde erwartet. In ihrem Hotelzimmer faende sie eine Handbibliothek vor, und sie wuerde glauben, sich anhand von Lazzaratos "Videophilosophie" ueber die neuen Medien unterrichten zu koennen. Zusammen mit dem Eindruck, den sie etwa ueber das Fernsehen, den "Aufseher der Zeit", von ihrer neuen Umgebung bekaeme, haette sie das Gefuehl, alles sei schon im Gange, alles sei neu, oder dabei, sich zu veraendern. Innovation, Erneuerung, Ueberholung, Revolution ,--so die Auskunft der Werbung. Was davon Selbstbeschreibung des Kapitalismus waere, koennte sie nicht einschaetzen. Sie wuerde dem Autor folgen, wenn er Henri Bergons "Materie und Gedaechtnis" heranzieht, um zu zeigen, auf welch bahnbrechende Weise darin die Zeitlichkeit des bewegten Bildes erforscht wird. Die Vision des russischen Filmrevolutionaers Dziga Vertov, wuerde sie als noch nicht eingeloest begreifen. "Das ,Kinoauge: die Faehigkeit, das Unsichtbare sichtbar zu machen.fuer die kommunistische Entzifferung der Welt." Seine Anstrengungen, die Arbeitsteilung des Kinos von innen heraus zu sprengen. Seine Hoffnung, sehen zu lehren: "Das Kinoauge oeffnet die Augen." Aber nicht indem eine vorher bekannte Lektion weitergegeben wird. Was er von seiner Produktion erhoffte war, dass damit allmaehlich die sichtbare Welt zu entdecken waere. "Millionen von Arbeitern werden, wenn sie einmal den Blick zurueckerobert haben, die Notwendigkeit anzweifeln, dass die buergerliche Struktur der Welt gestuetzt werden muesse". Die Arbeit und die Theorien von Kuenstlern wie Nam June Paik oder Angela Melitopoulos kaemen ihr als eine Bekanntschaft mit der Andersartigkeit des Videobildes und seiner Moeglichkeit, die Zeit angemessener zu behandeln, gelegen. "Die Videotechnologie enthuellt nicht nur die Bewegungen und die unendliche Variation der Bilder, sondern auch die ,Zeitmaterie', aus der die Bilder (die elektromagnetischen Wellen) gemacht sind." Die Entwicklung vom Foto ueber den Film bis zum Video erweist sich als gerichtet auf die Erfassung der Bewegung selbst. Mit den letzten Worten des Buches, einem Zitat von Benjamin,wuerde die Ausserirdische, bevor sie das Zimmer verlaesst, weil sie ihre Aufgabe schon laengst erfuellt glaubt, in ihren Kommunikator sprechen: "Barbarentum? In der Tat. Wir sagen es, um einen neuen, positiven Begriff des Barbarentums einzufuehren. Denn wohin bringt die Armut an Erfahrung den Barbaren? Sie bringt ihn dahin, von vorn zu beginnen."Die Auftraggeber auf ihrem Heimatplaneten wuerden sie dann wahrscheinlich abschreiben oder zurueck beordern. Schade. Wie konnte das passieren? "Problem: Wo sind die neuen Barbaren des 20. Jahrhunderts? Offenbar werden sie erst nach ungeheuren sozialistischen Krisen sichtbar werden und sich kristallisieren."
