Helmut Hasse (1898 - 1979) war ein deutscher Mathematiker und gilt als einer der führenden Algebraiker und Zahlentheoretiker seiner Zeit. Nach der ?Machtergreifung? der Nationalsozialisten gehörte er am 11. November 1933 zu den Unterzeichnern des Bekenntnisses der Professoren an den deutschen Universitäten und Hochschulen zu Adolf Hitler und dem nationalsozialistischen Staat. 1934 wurde er in Göttingen Nachfolger von Hermann Weyl, der wegen seiner politischen Ansichten und seiner jüdischen Frau in die Emigration getrieben wurde. Während der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus war er als Vorstandsmitglied der DMV in einen Machtkampf mit Ludwig Bieberbach, einem der Hauptvertreter der Deutschen Mathematik, verwickelt, da er die Unabhängigkeit der DMV erhalten wollte. Hasse ging es vor allem darum, das Ansehen der deutschen Mathematik im Ausland zu erhalten. Auch in seiner Zeit in Göttingen bemühte er sich, dem durch die Vertreibung jüdischer und gegen die Nationalsozialisten eingestellter Professoren entstandenen Bedeutungsverlust durch hohe Anforderungen an die wissenschaftliche Arbeit am Institut entgegenzuwirken. Politisch stand Hasse wie viele ehemalige Angehörige der Reichskriegsmarine weit rechts. Er beantragte 1937 die Aufnahme in die NSDAP, die ihm auch 1939 erteilt wurde (rückdatiert auf 1937). Da er aber eine jüdische Urgroßmutter hatte, führte das zu Widerständen in der Partei, in der einige Stellen hartnäckig ein Ausschlussverfahren anstrebten, das aber nach dem Eintritt Hasses in die Marine vorläufig auf Eis gelegt wurde. Im Krieg forschte er für die deutsche Kriegsmarine über Ballistik und Hochdruckphysik in Berlin und akquirierte dafür auch Räume am Mathematischen Institut in Göttingen, teilweise aber wohl auch um deren anderweitige Beschlagnahme zu verhindern. Seine Haltung im Nationalsozialismus blieb umstritten. Während man ihm einerseits zum Beispiel Eintreten für jüdische Kollegen wie Hensel und Emmy Noether zugutehielt, schrieb er andererseits zum Beispiel einen Aufsatz über die Lage der Mathematik in Deutschland in einer Festschrift zum 50. Geburtstag von Adolf Hitler und er trat einer 1937 gegründeten NS-Akademie der Wissenschaften in Göttingen bei. Einige ausländische und emigrierte Kollegen begegneten ihm deshalb später mit Misstrauen. Nach dem Kriege kam Hasse nach Göttingen zurück. Er wurde aber im September 1945 von den britischen Behörden seines Lehrstuhls enthoben. In einem Interview mit Constance Reid räumte Hasse ein, dass dies möglicherweise darauf zurückzuführen war, dass er unverblümt rechtes nationales Gedankengut unter anderem auf der ersten Fakultätssitzung und gegenüber amerikanischen Besuchern geäußert hatte. Godfrey Harold Hardy und andere setzten sich vergeblich für den Verbleib Hasses auf seinem Lehrstuhl ein. 1947 erging als Folge des Entnazifizierungsverfahrens ein Lehrverbot, wobei als Begründung die NSDAP-Mitgliedschaft seit 1938 angegeben wurde, und erst nach nunmehr in deutschen Händen liegendem Berufungsverfahren wurde er 1948 als entlastet eingestuft. Hasse ging währenddessen nach Berlin (Ost), wo er zuerst ab 1946 an der Deutschen Akademie der Wissenschaften und später an der Humboldt-Universität wirkte, an der er 1949 Professor wurde. In dieser Zeit entstanden seine Monographie und sein Lehrbuch der Zahlentheorie. 1950 nahm Hasse einen Ruf an die Universität Hamburg an, wo er bis zu seiner Emeritierung im Jahre 1966 blieb. Gr. 8°. Its objective is the classification of quadratic forms over the field of rational numbers (Hasse-Minkowski theorem). It is achieved in Chapter IV. The first three chapters contain some preliminaries: quadratic reciprocity law, p-adic fields, Hilbert symbols. Chapter V applies the preceding results to integral quadratic forms of discriminant ± I. These forms occur in various questions: modular functions, differential topology, finite groups. The second part (Chapters VI and VII) uses 'analytic' methods (holomor phic functions). Chapter VI gives the proof of the 'theorem on arithmetic progressions' due to Dirichlet; this theorem is used at a critical point in the first part (Chapter Ill, no. 2.2). Chapter VII deals with modular forms, and in particular, with theta functions. Some of the quadratic forms of Chapter V reappear here. The two parts correspond to lectures given in 1962 and 1964 to second year students atthe Ecole Normale Superieure. A redaction of these lectures in the form of duplicated notes, was made by J.-J. Sansuc (Chapters I-IV) and J.-P. Ramis and G. Ruget (Chapters VI-VII). They were very useful to me; I extend here my gratitude to their authors.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Kummer's work on cyclotomic fields paved the way for the development of algebraic number theory in general by Dedekind, Weber, Hensel, Hilbert, Takagi, Artin and others. However, the success of this general theory has tended to obscure special facts proved by Kummer about cyclotomic fields which lie deeper than the general theory. For a long period in the 20th century this aspect of Kummer's work seems to have been largely forgotten, except for a few papers, among which are those by Pollaczek [Po], Artin-Hasse [A-H] and Vandiver [Va]. In the mid 1950's, the theory of cyclotomic fields was taken up again by Iwasawa and Leopoldt. Iwasawa viewed cyclotomic fields as being analogues for number fields of the constant field extensions of algebraic geometry, and wrote a great sequence of papers investigating towers of cyclotomic fields, and more generally, Galois extensions of number fields whose Galois group is isomorphic to the additive group of p-adic integers. Leopoldt concentrated on a fixed cyclotomic field, and established various p-adic analogues of the classical complex analytic class number formulas. In particular, this led him to introduce, with Kubota, p-adic analogues of the complex L-functions attached to cyclotomic extensions of the rationals. Finally, in the late 1960's, Iwasawa [Iw 11] made the fundamental discovery that there was a close connection between his work on towers of cyclotomic fields and these p-adic L-functions of Leopoldt - Kubota.
