In Australia from 1885 to 1888 he contributed to the Sydney Bulletin. He then moved to Paris to study art. By 1890 he had returned to London and was anxious to join James Whistler's Chelsea Arts Club. He was elected in 1891. From 1892 to 1903 May produced Phil May's Winter Annual, which established his reputation as a caricaturist of Bohemian life and urban culture. He also worked for the Daily Graphic, Graphic, Illustrated London News, Sketch, Punch, English Illustrated Magazine and Pick-Me-Up. In den WarenkorbAn atmospherically illuminated poem, written as a tribute to Shackleton after his death and kept in the Shackleton family for over 65 years. The Shackleton-Rowett Expedition (1921-2), Shackleton's fourth and the last of the heroic age, set out with the goal of circumnavigating Antarctica. When Quest reached Rio de Janeiro, Shackleton's health started declining. "Although he appeared in high spirits, buoyed by the prospect of a new adventure, his surgeons remained fearful that his heart would not withstand the pressure" (Howgego). The ship reached Grytviken, South Georgia, in January 1922, where Shackleton suffered a heart attack and died within minutes. When the sad news was cabled to his wife Emily (1886-1936), she decided that her husband should not be brought home. He was laid to rest alongside the whalers in the Norwegian cemetery, facing south rather than the traditional east, in recognition of his lifelong Antarctic aspirations. Quest proceeded to Antarctic waters under Frank Wild's command, returning to England in August 1922. The Epiphany was written as a sonnet in honour of Shackleton immediately after he died in 1922 by the elusive Charles Darling, and it was published in the London Times in the same year. Darling was enamoured with the last words written by Shackleton the day before he died and incorporated them into his elegy: "In the darkening twilight I saw a lone star hover. Gem-like above the bay" (Wild p. 59). Shackleton, himself a poet, had a private library on the Endurance from which he lent freely to his crew. Poetry was a source of solace and motivation on his expeditions. He valued works on heroism, and greatly admired Robert Browning. The illuminator, who signs himself Hodge, was perhaps the Australian Alfred James Hodgeman (1885-1964), an architect, cartographer, sketch artist, and member of the Australian Antarctic Expedition (1911-1914) under Douglas Mawson. Provenance: the illuminated poem remained in the possession of the Shackleton family until 2001, when it was sold at Christie's in the "Polar Sale including the Shackleton Collection" (25 September 2001, lot 115). Howgego IV S25. Frank Wild, Shackleton's Last Voyage, 1923. Manuscript poem on vellum framed by two watercolours top and bottom, signed "Hodge" in lower left corner, within silver gouache border (215 x 125 mm), mounted, framed, and glazed (framed size 342 x 250 mm). Vellum slightly creased. A very good example.

In den Warenkorb*: Bruxelles, 1870 - 1914, complete set ( all published ), bound in 44 volumes , in-folio, issues of 8 pp with minimum 4 woodcut illustrations, from year 17 (1886-1887) onwards issues of 16 pages and mostly photoreproduction illustrations. In all over 28.000 pages. Bound in 44 volumes, mostly nearly uniform half leather bindings, three volumes and the last 6 years in half cloth, some foxing at first and last leaves of some volumes, all volumes with an index bound in, except year 1912 which lacks the index and the Christmas issue. Some volumes a bit rubbed but in all in very good condition. Extremely rare complete set in fine condition of this leading belgian illustrated periodical which had, as its name announces, European ambitions and which tried to emulate the ''London Illustrated News'' and the Parisian ''L'Illustration''. The first issues (November 1870) deal e.g. with the German army invading Paris and the last issue (Nr. 33 of August 16th 1914) reports on the German army invading the Belgian town of Liège and the start of the first world war. It obviously ends when Brussels was taken by the invading Germans. During the first 15 years the periodical was illustrated by means of the classical woodcut. Artists' names include L. Clerget, V. de Doncker, A. de Neuville, Gustave Doré, A. Doms, G. Durand, J. Féret, Gerlier, D. Lancelot, J. Lorain, Oberlander, Pannemaker, E. Puttaert, Sahib, F. Thelen, H. Van der Hecht, Van Kuyck, Wappers, Portaels, Brown, Dansaert. In the first issue of year 16 (November 1885) the editor announces the introduction of new lithographic methods. From year 17 onwards (1886) most of the illustrations are based on photographs and photographical reproduction. At the end of the 19th century the annual special Christmas issues are illustrated with colour printing. The illustrations comprise views of Belgian buildings, landscapes, political events, art reproductions but also international events, wars, demonstrations, voyages, art, etc. A very interesting iconographical survey of the waning Belle Epoque and 19th-century European culture soon to be buried on the battlefields of the Somme, Verdun and Ypres.

In den WarenkorbMelton Prior began working as an artist for the Illustrated London News in 1868. He gained his first assignment as a war artist in the Balkans in 1873 and emerged from the Boer War as the most famous of all the war artists. He later accompanied Lord Wolseley's ill-fated relief expedition up the Nile in 1884-5 - the title page for this album is misleading, it should read "Soudan". The expedition set out to rescue Gordon, residing in Khartoum at the time of the Mahdi uprising. Wolseley chose to follow the Nile, instead of the Suakin-Berber route advocated by others, and just failed to reach Gordon in time. There is much contention over this, but it seems likely that had he arrived earlier, it would have only hastened Gordon's death. The six images, all fine examples of Prior's work, depict the expedition in various stages, and all appeared in the ILN in 1884 and '85: "Lord Wolseley inspecting the Guards Camel Corps at Dongola previous to their leaving for the Front."; "Colonel Maurice buying Camels at Assiout"; The Canadians with the Nile Expedition The Manitoba Boys at Breakfast 6am"; The Pioneers of the Nile Expedition leaving Sarras for Dal November 2nd 84"; "Making the Mudir a Pacha, Lord Wolseley's arrival."; "'El Gemai' - starting point for Expedition putting Gear into Whalers".
