August 1806 in Paris) war ein französischer Maler, Zeichner und Radierer des Rokoko zur Zeit des Ancien Régime. Er war Schüler François Bouchers und entwickelte dessen Malstil konzeptionell weiter. Fragonard bildete sich dann in Rom weiter aus und wurde nach seiner Rückkehr durch sein Bild Koresos und Kallirrhoe Mitglied der Akademie. Dem herrschenden Geschmack entsprechend, verließ er das Fach der historischen Malerei ganz und wurde zu einem Maler der Erotik und des heiteren Lebensgenusses im Stil von Antoine Watteau. Neben Boucher und Watteau gehört er zu den drei Meistern des französischen Rokoko. In der Französischen Revolution verlor er sein durch zahlreiche Staffelei- und Dekorationsmalereien erworbenes Vermögen und starb, da er sich der neuen klassizistischen Richtung nicht mit Erfolg anzuschließen vermochte, in Armut und Vergessenheit. Seine Bilder wurden von den bekanntesten Kupferstechern seiner Zeit reproduziert; zudem schuf er selbst Kupferstiche nach eigenen Motiven und nach Tintoretto, Giovanni Lanfranco, Sebastiano Ricci, Annibale Carracci, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo und anderen. Sein Sohn Alexandre-Évariste Fragonard wurde Bildhauer und Maler, sein Cousin Honoré Fragonard war Anatom und Präparator. Fragonards Arbeitsstil zeichnet sich durch eine flockige und lockere Malweise aus (ähnlich Tiepolo). Dadurch wirken seine Figuren weniger porzellanhaft und lebendiger als die Bouchers. Teilweise erinnert seine grobe Pinselführung an Werke von Frans Hals und ist wie bei diesem vorausweisend auf den Impressionismus. Der Asteroid (8235) Fragonard ist seit 1999 nach ihm benannt.
