Searching for new themes of a higher truth and purity, the group did not only turn to artistic and literary sources of the Medieval Ages, the Renaissance and Romanticism but also to the poetic work of the contemporary Victorian Alfred Lord Tennyson. The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and the poet laureate shared a poetic affinity with medieval literature and culture. The Middle Ages provided an ideal counter world of romance, chivalry, simple order, and religious faith. In an era of modern science, Darwinism, and religious scepticism, Tennyson found his sources of inspiration in Arthurian legends and Shakespearian drama.Between the mid 19th century and the end of World War I, Pre-Raphaelite artists produced a great number of paintings and illustrations, ie. the illustrated Moxon Edition of Poems (1857), based on the work of Alfred Tennyson. Significant thematic fascination was directed towards early romantic maiden poems, i.e. 'Mariana' and 'The Lady of Shalott', both published in 1832 and revised in 1842. This research paper will examine the structure, atmosphere, and symbolism of these Tennysonian ballads and analyze the corresponding paintings of John Everett Millais, William Holman Hunt, and John William Waterhouse.

Die Geschichte und Bedeutung der 'Undine'-Erzählung wird betrachtet, ehe der Fokus auf Libretti und musikalische Mittel der drei Komponisten gerichtet wird.Die 'Undine'-Opern E. T. A. Hoffmanns und Albert Lortzings, beide beruhend auf der gleichnamigen Erzählung von Friedrich de la Motte-Fouqué, zeichnen sich durch sehr unterschiedliche Interpretationen ihrer Vorlage aus. Hoffmanns 'Undine', im Jahr der Uraufführung ein lokaler Erfolg, wurde seitdem nur weniger Male (Ulrich Schreiber gibt 4 Wiederaufführungen der Undine im 20. Jahrhundert an, die letzte davon 1970) inszeniert. Lortzings Oper war bis in die Fünfziger des 20. Jahrhunderts beim Opernpublikum äußerst beliebt, wurde seitdem aber ebenfalls selten zur Aufführung gebracht. Dennoch wird den Werken in der Musikgeschichte eine Rolle zugewiesen, und häufig werden sie dabei zueinander in Beziehung gesetzt: 'Eine symbolische Klammer verbindet zwischen Wiener Kongress und Vormärz die Undine von E. T. A. Hoffmann (1816) und Lortzing (1845)'.In der vorliegenden Hausarbeit möchte ich Hoffmanns, Lortzings und Henzes 'Undine'-Werke näherbetrachten. Dazu werde ich zunächst auf Fouqués Erzählung eingehen und deren Entstehung und Rezeptionkommentieren sowie zu erfassen versuchen, wieso der Stoff als Grundlage musikalischer sowie auch alsGrundlage von Werken jeglicher anderer künstlerischer Gattungen - in der bildenden Kunst gibt es 'Undine'-Gemälde von Johann Heinrich Füssli, John William Waterhouse oder Paul Gaugin, auch Hans ChristianAndersens 'Kleine Meerjungfrau'(1837), Jean Giraudoux 'Undine' (1939)oder Ingeborg Bachmanns 'Undinegeht'(1961) - letzteres ist in Beziehung zu Henzes Ballett zu setzen, da ihn und Bachmann eine engeKünstlerfreundschaft verband - beruhen auf Fouqués Erzählung - bedeutsam ist. Daraufhin werde ich mich denMusikwerken in chronologischer Reihenfolge widmen. Durch die Betrachtungen der Opern und des Ballettswerden einerseits das Schaffen und ästhetische Vorstellungen der Komponisten beleuchtet, zugleich zeigt sichhier Unterschiedlichkeit und Konstantes in der Interpretation des 'Undine'-Stoffs. Diese Gemeinsamkeiten undUnterschiede sollen in einem abschließenden Vergleich zueinander in Beziehung gesetzt werden.

Betoverd door vrouwen" in het Groninger Museum. Het idee voor deze bundel ontstond vanuit de gedachte dat de literatuur in de negentiende-eeuwse kunst een belangrijke plaats inneemt als inspiratiebron voor kunstenaars van verschillende disciplines. De Britse schilder John William Waterhouse is hiervan een bijzonder en belangrijk voorbeeld.
