Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. "There are no days more full than those we go back to. All those Christmases collide into each other and my memory is decorated by a series of mirrors, flashing light into chambers of sound and colorthe briquettes sparking red-layered on the fire, the crinkling of the ridiculous paper hats at dinnertimeand the laughter moving to deep silence at three in the afternoon when we leaned up against one another like old tires, full of turkey and gravy and trifle and God knows how many slices of plum pudding." From 'Every Christmas Morning now, Every Christmas Morning' then by Colum McCann. Packed with contributions from some of Irelands best-loved writers, including Roddy Doyle, Alice Taylor, Colum McCann, Sinead Moriarty and John Boyne, among others, each of the author royalties from this collection will be donated to Aware, a charity that supports individuals and families affected by depression. Festive stories vary from vivid recollections of a childhood Christmas spent in Ireland to travels as far as modern-day New York. Each unique story captures the range of emotions that come bundled up with Christmas memories. Without a doubt, The Little Book of Christmas Memories is the perfect fireside companion for this season as well as an ideal Christmas present! 480 g.

William Colenso (1811-1899) was an early missionary for the Church Missionary Society and pioneer printer in New Zealand. His M?ori languagetranslation of the New Testament, printed by himin 1837, was the first book printed in New Zealand and the first indigenous language translation of the Bible published in the southern hemisphere. The pamphlet was printed by the firm of R. S. Waterhouse & Brothers (i.e. Rowland Skipsey, William, and Jabez Bunting Waterhouse, the sons of Wesleyan missionary Rev. John Waterhouse, the first Superintendent of Wesleyan Methodist Missions in Australasia and Polynesia). During 1840 the Waterhouse brothers were advertising themselves asGeneral Printers and Bookbinders in Elizabeth Street, Hobart Town, at what was formerly Andrew Bent's printing office; the following year they would go into partnership with fellow Wesleyan William Pratt as Waterhouse & Pratt. London, Taylor and Francis, 1844. 8vo. In a nice later half morocco binding with five raised bands and gilt lettering to spine. Blind stamped to upper outer corner of first leaf of table of contents. In "The Annals and Magazine of Natural History", volume 13. A very fine and clean copy. [Darwin's paper] pp. (1)-6 + 1 plate. [Entire volume:] viii, [1] - 528 + 14 plates (4 hand-coloured). First edition of Darwin's paper on marine arrow worms collected by him on his voyage on the Beagle. It is one of Darwin's early papers on invertebrates, which was originally intended for publication in The Zoology of the Voyage of HMS Beagle. Described by Darwin as "one of the most anomalous animals in the world," the origin of these strange carnivorous animals, which Darwin found highly interesting, is still unresolved. These early works are rarely seen on the market. The plate, drawn by Darwin, is based on his drawings made during the Beagle Voyage.Darwin arrived back in England from his voyage around the world on the Beagle in October 1836. He immediately set about writing up the results of the expedition-first, his general account, the Journal of the Beagle, and then, publishing the scientific observations and collections he had made while on the Beagle. The majority of these were published in the Zoology-including parts on mammals, fish, birds, and reptiles but Darwin ran out of funds beforehe could bring out the volume on invertebrates:"Darwin undertook to provide a comprehensive programme for the publication of the zoological results of the Beagle voyage - he obtained a Treasury grant to pay for the necessary engravings, and, having enlisted the leading taxonomical specialists in the several fields, he superintended the publication of the Zoology of the voyage of H.M.S. Beagle from February 1838 to October 1843 - The work comprises five parts: Fossil Mammalia, by Richard Owen" Mammalia, by G. R. Waterhouse Birds, by John Gould Fish, by Leonard Jenyns" and Reptiles, by Thomas Bell-a total of nineteen quarto issues. Darwin contributed a substantial portion of the text, drawing uponhis field notes for geological and geographical data and for the descriptions of the habits and habitats of the species - Darwin had originally planned to include descriptions of invertebrates in the Zoology but the exhaustion ofthe government grant forced him to abandon the idea. Instead he decided to publish his own observations and descriptions of the specimens that he considered to be important new discoveries, and did so in articles on Sagitta finished during the autumn of 1843, and Planariae, described in 1844" (Burkhardt 1986 p. xv.).PROVENANCE: From the collection William Pickett Harris, Jr. (1897 - 1972) (pencil note on p. iii). American investment banker and biologist. Following a career in banking, Harris was appointed Associate Curator of the Museum of Zoology at the University of Michigan in 1928. "[Harris] played a highly important role in developing mammalogy and systematic collections of mammals at the University of Michigan" (Hooper p. 923).Freeman 1664.

(1748-1817, Admiral) saying he has "reason to believe that a letter of thanks which I had the honor of addressing to you when Lord St Vincent quitted the Admiralty, was neglected to be forwarded, or has miscarried, and having been since favored by yours of the 30th May, inclosing one for William (which I conclude he has acknowledged from the Mediterranean) I cannot resist, though at so late a period, expressing our obligations for your kind attentions on all occasions, & particularly for your continued friendship to William, who has a grateful heart, and feels all your goodness to him as he should do. The principles and professional knowledge he acquired under your auspices have alone rendered him what he is, & we are all flattered by the most favorable reports of him as an Officer, and a Gentleman. He has written fully to Mr Pickford on the subject of some serious accounts with the Partners and Executors of the late Mr Waterhouse, on the balance of which he must be entitled to a considerable sum, and I fear he has too much reason to complain of the backwardness and delay that has occurred in bringing forward even a statement of his account. The manner in which former applications have been treated in England is distressing, and by my advice William intends to solicit your countenance for Mr Pickford to obtain an investigation of the accounts and if possible part of the balance. My Father, who thank God, keeps his spirits. directed me to present his kindest regards & compliments whenever I should write to you." with a long postscript saying that should he "at any time wish to place the Son of a Seaman in Greenwich (Hospital) School, I shall always have a nomination at your Service. The prescribed age for admission is between 11 & 13. Lord St Vincent is unusually well & begs his compliments.", 3 sides 4to., 41 Trinity Square, 15th November From 1803 until 1804, Duckworth assumed command as the commander-in-chief of the Jamaica Station, during which time he directed the operations which led to the surrender of General Rochambeau and the French army, following the successful Blockade of Saint-Domingue. Duckworth was promoted to vice-admiral of the blue on 23rd April 1804, and he was appointed a Colonel of Marines. He succeeded in capturing numerous enemy vessels and 5,512 French prisoners of war. Admiral of the Fleet Sir William PARKER entered the Royal Navy in February 1793 as a captain's servant on the third-rate HMS Orion, serving under Captain John Duckworth. In the Orion, which was part of the Channel Fleet commanded by Lord Howe, Parker took part in the Battle of The Glorious First of June in June 1794 during the French Revolutionary Wars. When Captain Duckworth was assigned to another ship, the third-rate HMS Leviathan, Parker followed him, and sailed with him to the West Indies Station where Duckworth appointed him acting lieutenant in the fifth-rate HMS Magicienne. John Jervis, 1st Earl of ST VINCENT (1735-1823) was an admiral in the Royal Navy and Member of Parliament in the United Kingdom. Jervis served throughout the latter half of the 18th century and into the 19th, and was an active commander during the Seven Years' War, American War of Independence, French Revolutionary War and the Napoleonic Wars. Jervis married his cousin Martha, daughter of Lord Chief Baron Sir Thomas Parker and so George's sister.
