August 1896 in Thorn, Westpreußen; gestorben am 6. Mai 1990 in Concord, New Hampshire) war eine deutsche Fotografin auf den Gebieten des Porträts, des Theaters und der Kunst. (.) Ihre Bilder erschienen in Magazinen wie der 'Berliner Illustrirten Zeitung' oder in der 'Münchner Illustrierten Presse'. Ende der 1920er Jahre machte Lotte Jacobi die Bekanntschaft mit der italienischen Fotografin Tina Modotti. Im September 1930 stellte Modotti ihre Fotografien in Jacobis Galerie aus. Als das nationalsozialistische Regime ab 1933 der Jüdin Lotte Jacobi die Arbeit nahezu unmöglich machte, arbeitete sie zunächst unter verschiedenen Pseudonymen, begünstigt auch durch die Agentur Schostal. Jacobi sah sich jedoch letztlich zur Emigration gezwungen. Ihr Atelier am Berliner Kurfürstendamm 35, das sie zusammen mit ihrer Schwester Ruth Jacobi führte, wurde von dem Fotografen Hein Gorny übernommen. Sie emigrierte 1935 mit ihrem Sohn aus der zwischenzeitlich geschiedenen Ehe nach New York. Hier heiratete sie 1940 den Berliner Verleger Erich Reiß (gestorben 1951), der 1939 über Schweden nach New York emigriert war. Bis 1955 lebte sie in der Stadt und porträtierte amerikanische und emigrierte europäische Intellektuelle, Schriftsteller und Künstler. (.) In addition to winning three Pulitzer Prizes, MacLeish was commissioned by the NEW YORK TIMES to write a poem to celebrate the Apollo 11 moon landing, which he entitled "Voyage to the Moon" and which appeared on the front page of the 21 July 1969 edition of the paper.

Lotte Jacobi (1896-1990) was responsible for some of the most striking and enduring photographic portraits of the twentieth century. Her style, characterized by experimentation with unusual perspectives, cropped heads, and high or low angles, places her work in line with the Neue Sachlichkiet (New Objectivity) school of German photography. She was the fourth generation of her family to take up photography, following an apprenticeship with her father, she took over the 'Jacobi Studio of Photography' in Berlin. Between 1927 and 1935, she photographed many prominent figures from the arts and sciences, including Bertolt Brecht, Peter Lorre, Käthe Kollwitz, and Kurt Weill. John Heartfield was a customer of the studio from 1929 1932, and Jacobi made photographs for Heartfield's montages and book covers. After 1933, Jacobi concealed her Jewish identity by working under various pseudonyms, and in 1935, she immigrated to New York City, where she re-established a studio and successfully resumed her career. In 1938, she was the first woman to photograph on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange; her picture of the deserted floor was one of many of published in the New York Herald Tribune. Despite efforts to retrieve her archive, much of Jacobi's early work was lost when she left Germany.

Each an original silver-gelatin print (printed later); 14cm x 9cm (image areas slightly smaller); each captioned in ink "Prof. Albert Einstein" and signed at lower right by Jacobi. Each print with a brief autograph note on verso, dated December, 1982; to George Wald. Jacobi was among the greatest portraitists of the Twentieth Century, and Albert Einstein was arguably her most famous subject Jacobi's 1938 portrait of Einstein in his Princeton study is certainly among the truly iconic photographic portraits of its time, and probably the best-known image of Einstein in popular culture. The two photographs inclulded here appear to have been shot on the same day, ca. 1938, as Einstein is sporting the same deeply unbuttoned white polo shirt. The first image shows Einstein standing in a small sailboat, just the arm and nose of a female companion visible to the left of him. The second image is a close-up portrait of Einstein in white sunhat and pipe. Both portraits were included in Jacobi's limited-edition portfolio of Einstein photographs, issued in 1979 in commemoration of his hundredth birthday. Book inscription and both postcards addressed to George Wald, who received the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1967 for his work with pigments in the retina and advancements made in the study of vision.
