In den WarenkorbZustand: as new. Durham : Duke University Press, 2005. Paperback. 252 pp. Ills. = The history of tattooing is shrouded in controversy. Citing the Polynesian derivation of the word tattoo, many scholars and tattoo enthusiasts have believed that the modern practice of tattooing originated in the Pacific, and specifically in the contacts between Captain Cook's seamen and the Tahitians. Tattoo demonstrates that while the history of tattooing is far more complex than this, Pacific body arts have provided powerful stimuli to the West intermittently from the eighteenth century to the present day. The essays collected here document the extraordinary, intertwined histories of processes of cultural exchange and Pacific tattoo practices. Art historians, anthropologists, and scholars of Oceania provide a transcultural history of tattooing in and beyond the Pacific. The contributors examine the contexts in which Pacific tattoos were discovered by Europeans, track the history of the tattooing of Europeans visiting the region, and look at how Pacific tattooing was absorbed, revalued, and often suppressed by agents of European colonization. They consider how European art has incorporated tattooing, and they explore contemporary manifestations of Pacific tattoo art, paying particular attention to the different trajectories of Samoan, Tahitian, and Maori tattooing and to the meaning of present-day appropriations of tribal tattoos. New research has uncovered a fascinating visual archive of centuries-old tattoo images, and this richly illustrated volume includes a number of those-many published here for the first time-alongside images of contemporary tattooing in Polynesia and Europe. Tattoo offers a tantalizing glimpse into the plethora of stories and cross-cultural encounters that lie between the blood on a sailor's backside in the eighteenth century and the hammering of a Samoan tattoo tool in the twenty-first. Male warriors wore elaborate tattoos on their faces and bodies; women took more delicate chin tattoos. After almost dying out in the twentieth century, Maori tattooing is now experiencing a powerful revival, with many young Maori wearing the moko as a spectacular gesture of racial pride. Mau Moko is probably the most magnificent book ever produced about the moko, from pre-European times to the present day. It examines the use of tattooing by traditional and contemporary Maori and links it to other aspects of Maori culture. Gender issues are considered along with tattooing techniques both old and new. The book features case studies of modern Maori who have made a personal decision to be tattooed; the role and status of the tattooers; exploitation of the moko in popular culture around the world by figures such as rock singers and football players.".

A striking head and shoulder portrait of a Maori in New York wearing a Korowai or tag coat, a white feather in his hair and lower chin Ta Moko or tattoo. It appears that this image is not recorded at the National Library of New Zealand. Charles Eisenmann was born in Germany and migrated to New York City around 1870 and opened his first photography studio six years' later. He began specializing in theatrical and show business portraits and became acquainted with legendary showman and circus impresario P. T. Barnum, whose human oddities or 'freaks' were a popular exhibit at his American Museum. The two came to an agreement where Mr. Eisenmann would photograph the unique performers so cards could handed out as promotion to the public. Mr. Eisenmann's images are noted for particularly being sharp, clear, and well-posed. (adapted from Historiccamera dot com). It is unclear why Keewee was in NY but it was a common thread for tattooed individuals to pose for Eisenmann. Tattooing was banned by the NZ government in 1890 and it was not until 1962 that the ban was dropped. He is wearing a shirt, tie and jacket underneath his cloak, possibly something to do with missionary work. A beautifully constructed image, in very good condition overall, with slight oxidation around some edges of the verso, and some light foxing in the background of the image. 4 1/8 x 2 1/4" The verso text- Chas. Eisenmann, Photographer, 229 Bowery, New York. Portraits take by Instantaneous Process / Extra inducements to the Theatrical Profession. Syracuse University collection holds this image- "0078: Unidentified man with striped tattoos on face - recto: Bust view of an unidentified man with a tattoo of bold, symmetrical lines on his chin and cheeks. He is wearing a coat with bow tie beneath what appears to be a fringed robe. He is identified on the card as a Maori man from Aotearoa.; verso text reads, "KeeWee Maori / New Zealand." A search of the National Library of New Zealand's database for "carte de visite Maori" has 404 entries. Most are pictured, and none appear to be the person illustrated on this carte de visite.

In den WarenkorbZustand: Very good plus. First edition of this classic study of Maori tattooing, profusely illustrated with photographs and Robley's own drawings. Robley, an amateur artist with a deep interest in Maori culture, had a genuine passion for recording the intricate designs, techniques, and history of the intricate art of t? moko; he was also a soldier and, notoriously, a collector of mokomakai: preserved, tattooed human heads, sought after and debased as objects of commerce and display by European and American collectors and museums alike. Robley's meticulous illustrations, photographs, and descriptions have become an invaluable resource for historians and revivalists of traditional Maori arts, preserving unique images of an art form and cultural practice that, at the very same time, imperialistic forces were beginning to efface. An indispensable study. 11" x 9" Original gilt-stamped brown cloth boards, with decoration stamped in black. Black endpapers. Illustrated with 180 plates and frontispiece. [22], 216 pages. Mild edgewear and scuffing to boards at extremities. Spine lightly sunned. Light foxing, primarily to title page and surrounding leaves. Hinges sound.

In den WarenkorbA stunning collection of 34 full page colour portraits, each with a brief biography of the subject on the facing page. The end-papers feature detailed drawings of each intricate tattoo. First edition in unclipped dust jacket. 96 pages. 335 x 245 mm (13¼ x 9¾ inches). Dust jacket and book are both in a very good condition. The clear removable plastic protective cover had sadly been secured by sticky tape, over time some of the residue has transferred to the endpapers (this is shown in the photographs). The portrait artist Harry Sangl created these works of art after seeing a centenarian Maori woman with a moko (chin and lip tattoo). He undertook a three-and-a-half year journey around the North Island of New Zealand during the 1970's, looking for the last remaining Kuia (Maori women) with such decorations.

In den WarenkorbLondon : Chapman & Hall, 1896. Quarto, gilt-lettered brown cloth with moko decoration, (a couple of light stains, minor rubbing at edges, corners a little bumped, small impaction dent to spine), bookplate to front pastedown, photographic frontispiece, 180 illustrations and photographs; a good copy of this scarce publication. Horatio Gordon Robley (1840-1930) was a soldier, artist, and collector. He arrived in New Zealand in 1863 and while stationed in the country drew an unprecedented number of sketches of M?ori life. Moko; or M?ori tattooing is his magnum opus. His acknowledged objective was to put together a text to support the specialised record he had drawn of tattoo patterns. Robley also had a significant personal collection of mokomokai, or preserved M?ori heads with moko design. When he returned to England in 1908 he offered to sell his collection of heads to the government of New Zealand; they declined, and the collection eventually went to the American Museum of Natural History. In 1998 these human remains were repatriated to New Zealand.
