In den WarenkorbLetter. Three-page letter on both sides of one 9-3/4" x 7-3/4" sheet to a Mrs. [Margaret Stuyvesant] Rutherford SIGNED in full by Taylor who grants permission for Mr. Potter to set to music to his poem "Bedouin Song" and wondering about the mechanics of doing so: "Remember that I do not read music, and if the air and accompaniment were sent to me without hints as to where the lines terminate, I might produce effects not anticipated by the composer." He also discusses an upcoming meeting with the artist Elihu Vedder: "it might be a little awkward for me to write and urge the illustration of one of my poems. Hath he been furnished with the necessary sheet of card-board? Methinks an accidental failure in this respect may account for the failure of his sketch. Artists are (of right) exceptional beings, and, like nervous cows, require to be tied up, hoof and horn, before they will allow their imaginative faculty to be milked." Taylor was a successful poet and America's first travel writer. Minor creases from mailing, some variation in ink strength. Near Fine.

In den WarenkorbFirst play edition, inscribed by the author on the title page in the year of her death, "To Clive Hirschhorn from Daphne du Maurier, 1989", and signed by her on an Ex Libris bookplate. Signed copies of du Maurier's theatrical adaptation of her famous novel are scarce. The runaway success of Rebecca (1938) prompted both du Maurier and Alfred Hitchcock to adapt the novel for performance. Their stage and film versions premiered weeks apart, du Maurier's first, on 11 March 1940 at the Opera House, Manchester. The landmark event was frequently discussed in the newspapers. The Tatler ran an article titled "Rebecca simultaneously on stage and screen" (3 July 1940). Herbert Farjeon of The Bystander praised the play's "brooding atmosphere and strong drama", led by Celia Johnson as the second Mrs de Winter, who appears "with a sensitive delicacy that is incapable of error" (24 April 1940). After Manchester, the play moved to the West End, where it ran at the Queen's Theatre from 5 April up until the bombing of the theatre on 7 September 1940. Directed by George Devine, the cast also starred Owen Nares as Maxim and Margaret Rutherford as Mrs Danvers. The Broadway premier took place at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre in 1945. It is from the theatre collection of Clive Hirschhorn (b. 1940), who spent decades as the Sunday Express's film and theatre critic and whose various histories of Hollywood include The Warner Bros. Story (1978) and The Hollywood Musical (1981). Small octavo. Original black cloth, orange paper spine label. With dust jacket. Stamp of importers Grahame Book Company of Sydney below imprint on title page, and visible underneath the signed Ex Libris bookplate on front pastedown. Spine ends bumped, toning of leaves; jacket price-clipped, spine toned, small chips to spine ends, ghost of a removed label on front panel: a very good copy of this wartime production in like jacket.

In parts: "My wife, Margaret Rutherford, and I thank you very much for sending us `The Pipers Inn` to read. It is not in the least a `Farce` it is a simple country tale told with sincerity and zest and I read it with affection. [.] It is only the greatest artists at moments of inspiration, with all their craft and experience behind them who can pin-point and hold such simplicity for the stage or screen. There must be deep knowledge - style - and just that touch of novelty - slightly ahead of the fashion - which looks so easy when it is done because the art of it is concealed. Then you have a J. M. Barrie a Renee Claire film or a `Mr Deeds goes to town`. I do not feel that your theme carries sufficient individual creative power to inspire this very high standard of treatment necessary to commend it to the attention of those who make films or plays for my wife.
