There are light signs of use at blank corners, about fine. Marlene Dietrich was the true writer of the screenplay for this opus which took her from wealth to ruin to rags to fame to wealth again. The censors crossed out so much of her material (even in the pre-Code period) that by the time a final script was approved, she and director/mentor Joseph von Sternberg had little interest in making the film. They came through, though, with a brilliant odyssey highlighted by Dietrich in many moods, all behind heavy diffusion. Here is Dietrich as the down-and-out vagrant Helen Faraday, with Sidney Toler as the detective on her trail. Photo coded 1385-87.

Après avoir suivi le conservatoire, Charles Boyer commence sa carrière par le théâtre, mais c'est en France, notamment grâce à Marcel L'Herbier, puis à Hollywood qu'il connaît ses plus grands succès comme « jeune premier » au cours des années 1920 et 1930. Les plus grandes actrices de son époque furent ses partenaires : Bette Davis (L'Étrangère), Greta Garbo (Marie Walewska), Marlène Dietrich (Le Jardin d'Allah), Danielle Darrieux (Mayerling, Madame de.), Irene Dunne (Elle et lui), Olivia de Havilland (Par la porte d'or), Ingrid Bergman (Hantise, Nina), Michèle Morgan (Maxime). Il continue encore d'avoir des rôles jusqu'à sa mort, mais avec un succès moindre. En 1938, il décroche le fameux rôle de Pépé le Moko, le voleur en fuite dans Casbah, un remake en langue anglaise du film français Pépé le Moko (avec Jean Gabin). Bien que dans le film, Boyer n'ait jamais dit à Hedy Lamarr « Viens avec moi à la Casbah », cette phrase était présente dans la bande annonce du film. La phrase lui collera à la peau, grâce aux parodies des Looney Tunes. Le rôle de Boyer dans Pépé Le Moko était déjà célèbre quand l'animateur Chuck Jones responsable du personnage de Pépé le putois, la mouffette rayée romantique (et non un putois) apparaît pour la 1re fois en 1945 dans Odor-mesure Kitty. "Vera fotografia" (cm.10,5x15) prodotta dalla ditta "Alterocca -Terni" nel 1941, raffigurante un intenso ritratto con autografo. Al retro della cartolina, non viaggiata, si intravvede la traccia a matita: "Isa Miranda Via Angela Merici Roma ed Il nome (o la firma) del marito dell'attrice, il produttore Alfredo Guarini (forse l'appunto di un ammiratore o forse di pugno dello stesso Guarini). Ottima copia. Fu negli anni Trenta la prima diva di classe internazionale: nel biennio 1934-'35 due pellicole ("La signora di tutti" di M. Ophüls e "Passaporto rosso" di G. Brignone) la lanciarono sul mercato straniero, prima con film in doppia versione italo-tedesca e poi, nel 1937-'39 facendola approdare ad Hollywood dove interpreterà due pellicole di scarso successo, anche perché gli agenti delle Majors cercheranno di vendere la sua immagine facendo leva sulla rassomiglianza con la divina Marlene Dietrich. Al suo rientro in patria, nonostante l'ostracismo del Minculpop, nel 1942 riesce ad ottenere il ruolo di protagonista in due capolavori del realismo calligrafico: "Malombra" di M. Soldati e "Zazà" di R. Castellani, fornendo due prove magistrali. Nel dopoguerra il cinema non scorda il suo talento: da "Le mura di Malapaga" di R. Clement, accanto a J. Gabin (1949), a "La Ronde" di Ophüls (1950), a "Siamo donne" di L. Visconti (1953) prima di affrontare, saltuariamente, parti di caratterista: da "Gli sbandati" di F. Maselli (1954) a "Il portiere di notte" di L. Cavani (1974). Dal 1932 al 1960 è stata anche attiva come primattrice in teatro, recitando con successo in numerosi paesi.
