Kingsley (1862-1900) ist eine der unkonventionellen, von der Entdeckungsgeschichte gern vergessenen Afrikaforscherinnen. Ihre zweite Reise begann im Dezember 1894 und führte zunächst nach Calabar im Süden Nigerias. Kingsley erforschte die Region des Cross River und die Insel Bioko, danach das Mündungsgebiet des Ogooué in Französisch-Kongo (heute Gabun) zwischen Libreville, Port-Gentil und Lambaréné. Im Kanu gelangte sie den Fluss Ogouoé aufwärts bis zu den Alembe-Stromschnellen. Danach wagte sie sich von Lambaréné in das Gebiet zwischen Ogooué und Remboué zum berüchtigten Volk der Fang, die als Kannibalen galten. Bevor sie nach England zurückkehrte, ging sie noch in Kamerun an Land und bestieg, vermutlich als erste Frau, den Kamerunberg (Mount Cameroon, 4095 m). Auf ihren sehr abenteuerlichen Reisen durchquerte sie Regionen, die von Europäern noch nicht betreten worden waren, wobei sie mehrfach nur knapp mit dem Leben davonkam. Ihr humorvoll geschriebener, publizistisch damals sehr erfolgreicher Reisebericht »Travels in West Africa« erschien in London 1897 und trug maßgeblich zu einer kritischeren Sicht auf den Sklavenhandel und auf den britischen Kolonialismus bei (vgl. Eutiner Landesbibliothek, Katalog Reiseliteratur).

Mary Henrietta Kingsley (1862Ð1900) was an English ethnographer, scientific writer, and explorer whose travels throughout West Africa and resulting work helped shape European perceptions of both African cultures and British colonialism in Africa. Frontispiece b/w photograph of an Angolan fisherman at home. Slight foxing in the preliminaries, otherwise very good indeed.

Original dark red cloth, gilt title lettering to spine. 2 lithographed plates of fish, 16 photographic plates, and numerous vignettes in the text. Scattered blotches of foxing throughout, never very heavy. Old ink owner's name to half-title, plus inked note in manuscript to top margin of first pages of text. Ex.libris Albert Ruskin Cook, with his Makindye, Kampala, bookplate to front pastedown. Cook (1870-1951) was a British medical missionary in Uganda, who established the Mengo Hospital in Uganda, the oldest hospital in East Africa. He was President of The Uganda Society in 1933-1934.
