Original illustrated dust-jacket in very fine condition, not price-clipped. A few small, marginal tears, but overall excellent. Internally near mint. VII, (1), 359, (1) pp. First edition, first printing, of this pioneering study in media theory, which completely revolutionized our understanding of the process of communication and the development of the mind of mankind, from the invention of movable type through to the electronic age" this work actually predicts the world wide web and today's information-dependent world, , making it "the most important book ever written on communication". It is in this groundbreaking work that McLuhan first coins the phrases "global village" and "the medium is the message", completely rethinking our society. Due to this marvel of a book, written twenty years before the PC revolution and thirty years before the rise of the Internet!, "Marshall McLuhan has become an "ism". McLuhanism is a new approach to the relations of man and his technologies, and a radically fresh concept of our electronic world. Marshall McLuhan is a philosopher for the age of electronics, and a humanist for the age of communications. Seeing all of our new technologies as extensions of our senses, he examines the implications they hold for the very nature of human society" (From the front flap of the 5th printing of the work). Herbert Marshall McLuhan (1911 - 1980) was a Canadian philosopher of communication theory. His most famous and influential work is "Understanding Media", in which he coins his two most widely known and repeated phrases, but he has also written other highly important works in communication theory, and his work is viewed as one of the cornerstones of the study of media theory, as well as having practical applications in the advertising and television industries.Although he was a fixture in media discourse in the late 1960s, his influence began to wane in the early 1970s. With the arrival of the internet, however, his works have experienced a great renaissance and he is now considered the most important media thinker of all times and his main work, "Understanding Media", the most important book on communication. "When Marshall McLuhan first coined the phrases "global village" and "the medium is the message" in 1964, no-one could have predicted today's information-dependent planet. No-one, that is, except for a handful of science fiction writers and Marshall McLuhan. Understanding Media was written twenty years before the PC revolution and thirty years before the rise of the Internet. Yet McLuhan's insights into our engagement with a variety of media led to a complete rethinking of our entire society. He believed that the message of electronic media foretold the end of humanity as it was known. In 1964, this looked like the paranoid babblings of a madman. In our 21st century digital world, the madman looks quite sane. Understanding Media : the most important book ever written on communication. Ignore its message at your peril." (Official review of the 2001 Routledge Classics-edition). The first printing is difficult to come by in general and is very rarely seen in a nice dust-jacket.

In den WarenkorbTaschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Ursprünglich 1967 erschienen wirkt »The Medium is the Massage« heute noch jung und provozierend. Damit wurde aus dem ursprünglichen »The Medium is the Message« der neue Titel »The Medium is the Massage«.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Academic Paper from the year 2019 in the subject Literature - Canada, grade: A, , language: English, abstract: Originally published in 1964, Marshall McLuhan's examination of the media and the implication of it for the future at best can be considered ahead of its time. The book, which examines how language, technology and speech shape human behaviour, demonstrated an accurate understanding of the emergent mass media and its potential. The tenements of the author's thesis continue to remain steadfast as the conventional forms of mass media have transformed in the more connected 'New Media' that is outlined by authors like Richard Davis and Diana Owen. While a general understanding of the work can be facilitated by a cursory examination of the text, there is such a wealth of information present that critical thinking for analysis would necessitate breaking down the book into more thematic divisions. As the first and perhaps most poignant dimension for understanding McLuhan, 'The Medium is the Message' is a logical place to start. Understanding that the medium is, in fact, the message is not only a departure from the conventional understanding of innovation but the primary foundation on which all of the author's perspectives are established.

In den WarenkorbTaschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - While 'the medium is the message', as defined by communicative theorist Marshall McLuhan, it must be understood and implemented in educational settings. Educators must be aware that the way in which they teach, affects what they teach, and in turn, affects how students learn. To improve the potential for learning, the method of how learning is communicated must be realized, crafted, and delivered in the most beneficial way to reach ultimate results. Communicating Encouragement is a unique five-step approach for educators to enhance the way messages are crafted and communicated to students and parents to maximize outcomes and learning potential. These same steps can be applied in general day-to-day interactions for anyone to have a more positive outlook and outcomes in their communication.

In den WarenkorbFirst paperback edition, first printing, of the first collaboration between the prophet of the digital age and the graphic designer who helped bring his message to the masses, together with the audio companion piece produced by John Simon and released by Columbia Records the same year. The late 1960s had seen the rapid growth of mass media and the first buds of computer technology. McLuhan dubbed this era "the electric age" and proselytized that these fledgling mediums would completely reshape human culture. Despite being met with scepticism by his contemporaries, he is now a cult figure whose predictions have largely become reality. This work was published 16 years before the advent of the internet, and promotes McLuhan's famous thesis, that the medium by which information is transferred between people is more important than the content being relayed. It was designed by Quentin Fiore, who is best-known for his collaborations with McLuhan, Jerry Rubin, and Buckminster Fuller. He felt the book "had to convey the spirit, the populist outcry of the time, in an appropriate form. The 'linearity' of the average book wouldn't work. The medium, after all, was the message!" (cited by Miller). As a consequence, the book is non-linear, with many pages printed in reverse. Similarly, the recording uses audio clips of McLuhan interspersed with a patchwork of other sounds to illustrate the complex relationships between people, media, and technology. The title was meant to be "The Medium is the Message". "Massage" was a printer's error, but McLuhan, who delighted in puns, enjoyed the typo and kept it, viewing it as a reference to the "mass age" of communications. "The Medium is the Massage reveals how the medium, or process, of our time - electric technology - is reshaping and restructuring patterns of social interdependence and every aspect of your personal life. How it is forcing you to reconsider and re-evaluate practically every thought and every institution you formerly took for granted" (rear wrapper). J. In den WarenkorbTaschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - McLuhan in Reverse proposes two new and startling theses about Marshall McLuhan's body of work. The first argues that despite McLuhan's claim that he did not work from a theory, his body of work in fact constitutes a theory that Robert K. Logan calls his General Theory of Media (GToM). The second thesis is that McLuhan's GToM is characterized by a number of reversals, including his reversals of figure and ground, cause and effect, percepts and concepts; and the medium and its content as described in his famous one-liner 'the medium is the message.' While McLuhan's famous Laws of Media are part of his GToM, Logan has identified nine other elements of the GToM. They are his use of probes; figure/ground analysis; the idea that the medium is the message; the subliminal nature of ground or environment revealed only by the creation of an anti-environment; the reversal of cause and effect; the importance of percept over concept and hence a focus on the human sensorium and media as extensions of man; the division of communication into the oral, written, and electric ages along with the notions of acoustic and visual space; the notion of the global village; and finally, media as environments and hence media ecology.

In den WarenkorbBuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The United States' education system, especially its universities, is under attack by theideological Left, dominated by advocates of Wokeism and Critical Race Theory. Marshall McLuhan was a brilliant thinker best known for his insight that "the medium is the message.'Universities, as well as our entire educational "medium" including the K-12 system that feeds its graduates into the university and societal systems, are powerful and overarching mechanisms that we use to shape our understanding. For Western nations, the ideal of the university and of education generally has been to provide us with analytical skills, knowledge, and the ability to create and nurture a healthy society that benefits as many people as possible. That ideal, and the university as educational and social "medium,"is under severe attack. The power to use the university as an overarching "medium" that offers a strong sense of legitimacy to even flawed and overstated arguments and assertions is why the institution is a target of an ideological Left that is now dominated by advocates of Wokeism and Critical Race Theory. Once obtaining a strong power base in university disciplines and administrations, the revolutionaries of race, gender, and other radical interests metamorphosed from heroic moral beacons fighting and railing against injustice, and revealed themselves as ideological dictators. The truth is that what we now refer to as the Woke/Critical Race Theory activist movementparticularly that controlled by those who came to power in the past thirty years or sowere not simply seeking to expand the nature and content of the university curriculum, or even what is taught in the K-12 system. Their intent was and is to "destabilize,""transform," and supplant what is taught. They seek to create a culture that elevates their interests while aggressively repressing anything they see as an obstacle to power, including healthy discourse and debate. The activists of the Woke/Critical Race Theory Movement are not an honest intellectual movement. They are intense and aggressive political strategists, self-styled "revolutionaries" seeking to use our educational systems with the framed narrative of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) that is actually one of 'Division, Enmity, and Intimidation/Indoctrination,'all the while claiming their interests are benign and aimed at healing. In reality, they are fracturing our fundamental social order, sowing discord, and deliberately suppressing the freedom of speech and thought essential to the well-being of our democratic republic.Conformity Colleges: The Destruction of Intellectual Creativity and Dissent in America's Universities will help youunderstandwhat is happening and cometo grips with the need to challenge, counter, and reverse this"revolution.' Nothing of significance can be done to stop what is going on unless the DEI administrative bureaucracy that now controls universities is dismantled or substantially weakened.

Unverzichtbar ist in diesem Zusammenhang die Erwähnung des wohl bekanntesten Schlagworts McLuhans: 'The medium is the message'.
