I think Borremans has something quite new to bring to the figurative tradition. His subtle, subdued, gorgeous works seem to come from the 1930s or 40s, yet they express the anxiety of our era. The book is small, just 9.75 x 6 inches, so the reproductions are small too. Most are well-presented, though the color on some looks iffy. Some works have been enlarged to cross the gutter, which can be frustrating. But this is still a painter worth getting to know, and thus the book is worth it. A decade from now you'll be glad that you have this first book on the artist on your shelf. Borremans's Zeichnungen/Tekeningen/Drawings is an excellent book, but it's harder to get and his drawings are quite different from the paintings. I recommend both books. With a selection of contemporary artworks explicitly inspired by the world of dream and sleep, the exposition Sleeping Beauties allows its visitors to take a peek into the dream world down the rabbit hole. In accordance with the philosophy of the Kasteel van Gaasbeek both the works of acclaimed artists (Michael Borremans, Spencer Tunick, Bill Viola,.), newcomers and outsiders is shown, and given the chance to interact with the romantic interiors of the castle. During the trip down the wonderland of sleep we meet daydreamers, blissful sleepers, mysterious phantoms and fearsome creatures of the night. Visitors are submerged in a hidden world, an illusory atmosphere, inspired by the blue hour.
