Bald aber zeigte sich, daß die gegenseitige Hilfe ihre Grenzen hatte: Auch der arrivierte Wilson hatte immer wieder schwere Existenzsorgen, die denen Nabokovs kaum nachstanden, und mußte wie dieser einen täglichen Kampf mit Redakteuren und Verlegern führen.

Nabokov's stature as a literary critic was founded largely on his four-volume translation and commentary on Alexander Pushkin's novel, Eugene Onegin, published in 1964. The commentary concluded with an appendix titled Notes on Prosody stemming from Nabokov's observation that while Pushkin's iambic tetrameters had been a part of Russian literature for a fairly short two centuries, they were clearly understood by the Russian prosodists. On the other hand, Nabokov saw the much older English iambic tetrameters as muddled and poorly documented.

Finely illustrated --- A lovely illustrated edition of Pushkin's masterpiece, one of the most famous texts of Russian literature. Limited to 600 copies and printed under the supervision of Dobuzhinsky's eldest son, Rostislav, and Yakov Noevich Blokh, the owner of the publishing house. This is the first appearance of the full set of Dobuzhinsky's illustrations, with the original text in Russian, after a publication in London in English the previous year. Alexander Benois Dobuzhinsky's fellow member of the artists' association Mir Iskusstva - wrote on that occasion: "Eugene Onegin has finally received worthy illustrations. I consider this an event of paramount importance in the Russian art world. Dobuzhinsky presented the reader-viewer (for the time being English, but hopefully, over time, Russian as well) with a genuine masterpiece" (p. 178). Dobuzhinsky began working on the drawings in 1936 and finalised them for the 100th anniversary of Pushkin's death; the original drawings featured in the landmark Pushkin exhibition organised by Serge Lifar in Paris in 1937. The editor Vladislav Khodasevich noted in his Afterword that he based this edition on the 1837 text of Onegin and that he corrected numerous errors and restored the lines excluded due to censorship. Petropolis' edition also contains 'Onegin's Album' and fragments of the partially destroyed 10th chapter, first published in 1910. Khodasevich, himself a prominent poet, "Pushkin's literary descendant on the Tiutchev line" (Nabokov), wrote multiple articles and books on Pushkin, including The Poetic Economy of Pushkin (1924), Petersburg Tales of Pushkin (1914), On the Gabrieliade (1918), Pushkin, the famous banker (1928), Dueling stories (1937), Pushkin's Wife (1938) et al. The publishing house Petropolis had become at the time the largest Russian foreign publishing house. Founded in Petrograd in 1918 by the translator Grigorii Lozinskii, Petropolis became famous for publishing the leading names of the Russian Silver Age, such as Akhmatova, Gumilev, Kuzmin, Mandelshtam. Blokh, then owner of Petropolis, left for Germany in 1922 and significantly developed his publishing activity in the "Russian Berlin" of the 1920s. In 1938, he moved on to Brussels, where this edition of Onegin appeared. He then left to Switzerland after the outbreak of the war. Provenance: Avenir Nizoff (émigré, pianist, who lived in Edmonton, Canada, in the second half of the 20th century, and gathered a large, wide-ranging library of Russian works, especially covering art, history and literature). Weniger bekannt ist, daß er sich seit der Flucht seiner Familie aus Rußland 1919 während seines lebenslangen Exils intensiv als Übersetzer zwischen verschiedenen Sprachen betätigte. In Berlin, wo er fünfzehn Jahre lebte, fertigte er russische Übersetzungen von Lewis Carrolls Alice im Wunderland sowie von Romain Rollands Colas Breugnon an und begann dort auch, seine eigenen Romane ins Englische zu übersetzen. Nachdem er mit seiner Frau Véra und seinem Sohn Dmitri auf dem Umweg über Frankreich aus Nazi-Deutschland entkommen war, lehrte Nabokov in den USA an verschiedenen Colleges. Für seine Vorlesungen zur russischen Literatur an der Cornell University befaßte er sich mit den Übersetzungen der Klassiker und war damit so unzufrieden, daß er sich entschloß, selber Abhilfe zu schaffen. 1949 begann Nabokov seine bewußt auf Reime verzichtende Übersetzung von Alexander Puschkins Versroman Jewgenij Onegin. Für die deutsche Ausgabe wurde Puschkins Originaltext von Sabine Baumann aus dem Russischen in zeilengetreue Prosa übertragen. Dazu schrieb Nabokov einen hier erstmals auf deutsch vorgelegten Kommentar. Mit Abstand das zeitaufwendigste und umfangreichste all seiner Werke, ist es zugleich der Höhepunkt seines übersetzerischen Schaffens. Vladimir Nabokov, geb. am 22.04.1899 in St. Petersburg, entstammte einer großbürgerlichen russischen Familie, die nach der Oktoberrevolution von 1917 emigrierte. Nabokov selbst ging zunächst nach England, wo er am Trinity College in Cambridge französische und russische Literatur studierte. Von 1922-37 lebte er in Berlin, wo er 1925 die Russin Vera Slonim heiratete, der er bis zu seinem Lebensende nahezu alle seine Bücher gewidmet hat. 1938 verließ Nabokov Deutschland und ging mit seiner Frau und seinem Sohn nach Paris, bevor er 1940 nach Amerika übersiedelte. Wegen seiner Kenntnisse als Schmetterlingsforscher erhielt er 1942 einen Forschungsauftrag der Harvard Universität. Er beschrieb eine Reihe von neuen Schmetterlingsarten, von denen eine nach ihm benannt wurde. 1945 wurde er amerikanischer Staatsbürger. Mit der Hilfe von Freunden und unter anderem aufgrund der Studie über Nikolai Gogol, die er 1944 veröffentlichte, wurde ihm 1948 eine Professur für Vergleichende Literaturwissenschaft an der Universität von Cornell angeboten. Hier arbeitete er zehn Jahre lang, bis ihm der der Welterfolg von "Lolita" es ihm ermöglichte, seine Lehrtätigkeit aufzugeben. Nabokov zog in die Schweiz, wo er sich ganz dem Schreiben widmete, Schmetterlinge fing und seine russischen Romane ins Englische übersetzte. In gewisser Weise hat er sein Exildasein bis zu seinem Lebensende bewusst aufrechterhalten. Nie besaß er eine Wohnung oder ein Haus. Er lebte in einem Hotel in Montreux, wo er am 5. Juli 1977 starb.
