6 volumes bound as 1. First Dutch edition, the first one to be illustrated, of Pietro della Valle's account of his travels in Turkey, Egypt, the Holy Land, Syria, Iraq, Persia (Iran) and India. Della Valle, an Italian nobleman, sailed from Venice in 1614 to Istanbul, where he arrived in August 1614. He spent a year exploring the city and continued to Rhodes, Alexandria, Rosetta, Cairo, crossing the Sinai desert to Jerusalem, Damascus and Aleppo. Rather than return to Istanbul, Della Valle decided at this point to travel to Persia to meet the Safavid ruler Shah Abbas I. He travelled with the next caravan to Baghdad, where he married Ma'ani-Jowayri, daughter of a Nestorian Catholic father and an Armenian mother, and together they continued through snow-covered Kurdistan to Isfahan (Persia), which they reached in March 1617. Della Valle sojourned in Persia until early 1623, witnessing and commenting on the escalating conflict between Shah Abbas and the Portuguese empire. His account is based on letters sent to his friend the Neapolitan physician Mario Schipano. Volume one contains letters from Constantinople where he spent 18 months, the second and third are devoted to Persia where he stayed for four years, and the fourth to India and his return journey via Basra, Aleppo, Cyprus, Sicily, Corsica and Malta. Della Valle spoke proficient Arabic, Persian and Turkish which ennabled him to understand more of the foreign cultures he visited than many of the other Western travellers at this time. While staying with the Sultan of Bandar Abbas, he "met the son of the ruler of Dibba who was visiting. From this he learned that Dibba had formerly been subject to the kingdom of Hormuz, but was at that time loyal to the Safavids who in 1623 sent troops to Dibba, Khor Fakkan and other ports on the southeast coast of Arabia in order to prepare for a Portuguese counter-attack following their expulsion from Hormuz (Jarun). In fact, the Portuguese under Ruy Freire were so successful that the people of Dibba turned on their Safavid overlords, putting them all to death, whereupon a Portuguese garrison of 50 men was installed at Dibba. More Portuguese forces, however, had to be sent to Dibba in 1627 as a result of an Arab revolt. Curiously, two years later the Portuguese proposed moving part of the Mandaean population of southern Iraq, under pressure from neighbouring Arab tribes, to Dibba" (UAE History: 2000 to 200 years ago - UAEinteract, online). The two-part volume II on Persia was released in 1658, four years after his death, and the set was concluded in 1663 with the volume on India. First edition of this important collection of letters, chiefly between the orientalist and member of the Oratorian order, Jean Morin (1591-1659) and Cardinal Francesco Barberini (1597-1679). Occasioned by the attempt of Pope Urban VIII to unite the eastern churches with the Roman Catholic Church, they document an important early attempt to address the relations between Rome and the Christian communities of the Levant and Near East. The first two letters, from the Samaritan community in Egypt, are addressed to Joseph Scaliger and discuss the differences between their luni-solar calendar and that employed by the mainstream Jewish community; originally written in Hebrew, the present Latin versions were prepared by Morin. Fourteen letters contain the correspondence between Morin and Pietro Della Valle (1586-1652), on Samaritan matters and Islamic chronology. Purchased from the heirs of the French scholar Amelot de la Houssaye, the 94 letters were edited by the pioneering biblical critic Richard Simon (1638-1712), who may be credited with the "first attempt to write a history of the Bible as a piece of literature" (Schaff-Herzog). Focusing his analyses on the text, versions, and commentaries, Simon critically discussed the Septuagint and the Vulgate, and defended the translation of the Bible into the vernacular. He affirmed the critical value of the Masoretic text, while acknowledging the late origin of the Hebrew vocalization system. In his Histoire Critique du Vieux Testament (Paris, 1678) he also dared to suggest "that Moses cannot be the author of all the books attributed to him." Too radical for its time, the work was suppressed and nearly all copies of the first print run were destroyed. First edition of the travelogue of the Spanish diplomat Silva y Figueroa (1550-1624), who embarked on an embassy to Persia in 1614, hoping to secure from Shah Abbas exclusive trading rights in Persia and its dependencies. As the Latin manuscript was not published and a Spanish translation did not appear until the 20th century, this French translation published by de Puis (as well as the one issued by Louis Billaine the same year) long remained the only available version of the itinerary. - In 1619, Figueroa was granted an audience in Isfahan with the Shah, who sought to conclude a trading agreement with the Spanish but would not subscribe to the ambassador's demands for the restoration of Gombroon and other Portuguese enclaves, nor to the exclusion of the English and other nationalities. Negotiations were suspended and Figueroa ended up returning to Spain, where he arrived in 1624 after an absence of ten years. His account describes Lar, Shiraz, Kaan, Qazvin, and Qom as well as other places including the caravansaries where he stayed, and gives interesting ethnographic data on the non-Muslim communities, such as the Armenians in Jolfa or the Zoroastrians, as well as a precise description of Persepolis and its cuneiform inscriptions. Although Antonio de Goueva (1602) and Giambattista and Girolamo Vecchietti (1606) had already recognized cuneiform as a type of writing, Figueroa was the first person to describe the cuneiform characters as shaped like "pyramids" and "obelisks", thus anticipating Pietro della Valle. Of the Persian dependencies, Ormuz and Bahrain were considered of particular importance, the former for its trade in silks, the latter for pearls: "Mais ce Golfe [.] qui est beaucoup plus long que large, ayant au milieu cette fertile Isle de Baharen [.] si celebre par tout l'Orient, à cause de sa riche & precieuse pesche de perles" (p. 59). Furthermore, Figueroa mentions falcons "larger and stronger than in Europe" (p. 105) as well as "excellent horses" (p. 426), and "the best dates of all of Persia" (p. 94). - Covers slightly scuffed. First and only edition of Guadagnoli's Latin grammar of the Arabic language, in a luxurious folio format. He notes that they have taken special care with their Arabic setting and with the metre to suit them to the desires of native Arabic speakers, though the fact that the text was in Latin. The main text opens with a table of the letters, showing (from left to right!) the stand-alone, initial, medial and final forms, along with the name of each letter and its pronunciation. The texts used as examples include the first printing of two poems taken from manuscripts in the oriental library collected by Pietro della Valle (1586-1652) in Rome: the "Carmen Chazregiacum" and the "Carmen de invocationibus'.With early manuscript shelf-marks. "Erste deutsche Ausgabe von "A Voyage from England to India, in the Year 1754 and an Historical Narrative of the Operations of the Squadron und Army in India" (London 1773). Verfasser war der brit. Wundarzt Edward Ives (1719-1786). Er reiste auf einem Admiralsschiff der Englisch-Ostindien Compagnie nach Ostindien, wirkte eine Zeitlang an verschiedenen Hospitälern und kehrte vier Jahre später durch Vorderasien nach England zurück. Seine Route von Basra über Hille, Bagdad, Mosul, Diarbekr, Biredjik und Haleb nach Latakia nahm wenige Jahre später auch Carsten Niebuhr. Ives war - nach Ritter - der erste, der von den schon von Pietro Della Valle besuchten Ruinen von Ktesiphon (Mesopotamien) eine genauere Beschreibung nebst Zeichnung lieferte. Der deutsche Bearbeiter Christian Wilhelm Dohm (1751-1820), der später das grundlegende Buch "Über die bürgerliche Verbesserung der Juden" herausbrachte, setzte 1774 sein Studium in Göttingen fort. Diese Verbindung bezeugt auch die kurze Einl. des Göttinger Professors Blumenbach zu den "Medicinischen und chirurgischen Bemerkungen" im zweiten Band. Die auf dem ersten Titelblatt angekündigte Vorrede von Anton Friedrich Büsching (1724-1793) konnte dieser wegen "überhäuften Geschäften" nicht liefern. Zur Provenienz: Der hochgeschätzte Holsteiner Arzt Hensler, Schriftsteller und Reformer des öffentlichen Gesundheitswesens, hat auch in Göttingen studiert. 1769 wurde er zum Nachfolger von Struensee berufen, "der bis dahin Physicus in Altona, der Grafschaft Rantzau und der Herrschaft Pinneberg gewesen war. 1775 wurde er zum königlich-dänischen Archiater bestimmt."
