Gewebe. 211 S. , 22 cm Neuwertig. ** Titus Maccius Plautus (* um 254 v. Chr. in Sarsina, Romagna, Italien; um 184 v. Chr.) war einer der ersten und produktivsten Komödiendichter im alten Rom. Plautus wurde um 254 v. Chr. in dem kleinen apenninischen Bergdorf Sassina (heute Sarsina, Romagna, Italien) geboren. Es hielt ihn nicht in der dörflichen Enge, und er schloss sich als Jugendlicher einer der umherziehenden Theatertruppen an. Bald wurde er römischer Soldat, später Kaufmann. Dabei verlor er sein Geld und musste sich als wandernder Handmüller durchschlagen, so die antiken Viten. Wie viel von diesen Berichten wahr ist und wie viel konstruiert, lässt sich nicht mehr nachvollziehen. Zur Beurteilung sei eine antike Anekdote über Plautus erwähnt: Er sei angeblich schon als Schauspieler zu Geld gekommen, habe ein Handelsschiff ausgerüstet, doch dabei sein ganzes Geld verloren, da das Schiff in einen Sturm geraten sei und Schiffbruch erlitten habe. Danach habe sich der Dichter als Arbeiter in einer Mühle verdingen müssen. Schiffbruch und Arbeit in der Mühle sind allerdings zentrale Themen in den Komödien des Plautus, sodass es sich bei dieser Geschichte mit großer Sicherheit um eine Erfindung handelt, die in der Antike nur zu gerne geglaubt wurde, da man kaum Fakten über die beliebtesten Schriftsteller nach deren Tod zurückverfolgen konnte. Etwa im Alter von 45 Jahren fing er an, Komödien zu schreiben. Inzwischen waren griechische Komödien beliebt geworden. Plautus` Komödien, die ersten Werke waren Addictus und Saturio, waren rasch erfolgreich, sodass er das Müllerdasein aufgeben und sich dem Schreiben widmen konnte. Plautus starb hochbetagt um 184 v. This famous quotation, through its various translations, perfectly encapsulates the themes explored in Cristina Mazzoni?s new book. Man is a wolf to other men - as Plautus undoubtedly meant it - but a wolf can also be interpreted as a human being in particular circumstances. In both Italian and Latin the word lupa can describe a she-wolf or a prostitute, either a ferocious animal or a female human of voracious sexual appetites. This paradox has informed interpretations of the legend of Romulus and Remus since antiquity, where the she-wolf figures as animal, mother, and whore simultaneously, and the complexity and ambiguity of this formative being have given her long life as a symbol representing a myriad of concepts, individuals, and entities. Mazzoni sets herself the ambitious task of exploring the she-wolf in all her forms and interpretations, from the famous Lupa Capitolina to her appearance in modern art, archaeology, poetry, and literature. The organization that Mazzoni adopts for her daunting task is remarkably unique in privileging thematic and disciplinary divisions over chronological phases. The book is divided into three main sections, the first focusing on the Lupa Capitolina herself, the second on the literary depictions of the she-wolf in general, and the third on the she-wolf in the visual arts. Each large section is further divided into three chronological chapters: Antiquity, Middle Ages and Renaissance, and Modern and Contemporary Times. This doubly tripartite organization provides the support for Mazzoni?s eclectic style, which includes complex scholarly applications of gender theory, metaphorical descriptions of the contours of the eternal city, and plain matter-of-fact reporting on historical trivia. As described in her preface, this unusual format is largely borne from Mazzoni?s background in comparative literature 'in which the personal and professional cannot be disentangled from one another.' Trasferitosi nel 1947 all'Università "La Sapienza" di Roma, fu prima docente di grammatica greca e latina e poi, l'anno successivo, nuovamente di letteratura latina. Nell'ateneo romano, ove insegnò fino al pensionamento del 1982, formò molti allievi di valore tra cui il suo successore sulla cattedra universitaria, Bruno Luiselli.
