Verschiedene Stationen seines Lebens zeigen die Gründe auf, weshalb er sich intensiv mit der Bestrafung und Verhinderung von Genoziden befasste. Beginnend wird versucht darzulegen, was der Auslöser für Lemkins Werdegang war. In seiner Kindheit und Jugend erfuhr er in seinem Heimatdorf durch Tradierung von Neuigkeiten mindestens zweimal von Massakern und Völkermorden. Fraglich ist, ob und wenn ja welcher Völkermord das Zünglein an der Waage war, dass er sich dem Schutz von Minoritäten und Schwächeren verschrieb.Danach werden die ursprünglichen Ideen, Konzeptionen und Definitionen Lemkins bezüglich des Genozid-Begriffs dargelegt, um aufzeigen zu können, wie sehr und warum sich Lemkin darum bemühte.Im Wesentlichen wird die Kritik heutiger Genozid-Forscher an der von den Vereinten Nationen verabschiedeten Konvention über die Verhütung und Bestrafung des Völkermordes behandelt. Ebenso wird versucht, die zugrunde liegenden Leitfragen zu klären.Schließlich werden Abwandlungen des Genozid-Begriffs aufgezeigt und und die Art und Weise, wie er heute definiert beziehungsweise von der internationalen Staatengemeinschaft gehandhabt wird.Die Leitfragen sind, inwiefern Raphael Lemkin seinen ursprünglichen Entwurf, den er bereits vor Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs prägte, bei der Schöpfung der UN-Konvention durchsetzen konnte.
