Dustjacket. 368 pp. Ills. 28 cm. - Iconoclastic, generous, inventive, impulsive, sensitive, gregarious, prodigious: these are just some of the words to describe Robert Rauschenberg (1925-2008) and the art he made over his career. From the age of 38, when he received the grand prize at the Venice Biennale in 1964, Rauschenberg was a pivotal figure in the creative explosion of art following WWII. This revised edition of the classic biography of the artist adds a new chapter covering the significant moments in the final years of his life, and offers an in-depth look at his legacy and continued influence on the postmodern art world. It includes new photography and interviews with friends, colleagues, critics, and art historians. Rauschenberg is a richly impressive and highly readable portrait of the artist. The book shows the astonishing dexterity and range of Rauschenberg's art even as an emerging artist, the creation of his now famous combines, his eagerness to bridge art and technology, the establishment of the Rauschenberg Overseas Culture Interchange, and his final collaborative work: the Lotus Series with Universal Limited Art Editions. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Seminar paper from the year 2004 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 1,7, Free University of Berlin (John-F.-Kennedy Institut), language: English, abstract: For a thorough understanding of the development of the American art scene in the 1950s and 1960s, it is essential to have a close look on the early work of the forerunner Robert Rauschenberg whose art bridged the way between Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art. In this context, it is equally important to analyze Susan Sontag's essays on art and style from the mid-1960s which had a precursory function in the art critic world and promoted a new kind of sensibility to the audience. To understand the development of Rauschenberg's art concept, which was breathtakingly new at its time, it is inevitable to look at his artistic career and the different influences on his work from artistic models, teachers, and fellow artists. Additionally, an analysis of the 1950s and 1960s art scene and the change of the audience's reception are equally necessary to recognize the significance of Rauschenberg's work for its time and beyond. Sontag was one of the first critics to fully acknowledge the importance of Rauschenberg's ideas for the development of the American art scene. Her essay collection is thus in itself a pioneer work of a new kind of art criticism. Rauschenberg's artwork as well as Sontag's essays on the arts challenged people's perspective on art and its functions. Even though Sontag only directly refers twice to Rauschenberg's artwork in her essay collection 'Against Interpretations', her ideas of the new kind of art of the late 1950s and early 1960s nevertheless strongly correspond to Rauschenberg's art concept. The artist and the art critic thus paved the way for a new understanding of art and its reception.

In den WarenkorbTaschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - From Picasso's Cubism and Duchamp's readymades to Warhol's silkscreens and Smithson's earthworks, the art of the twentieth century broke completely with earlier artistic traditions. A basic change in the market for advanced art produced a heightened demand for innovation, and young conceptual innovators - from Picasso and Duchamp to Rauschenberg and Warhol to Cindy Sherman and Damien Hirst - responded not only by creating dozens of new forms of art, but also by behaving in ways that would have been incomprehensible to their predecessors. Conceptual Revolutions in Twentieth-Century Art presents the first systematic analysis of the reasons for this discontinuity. David W. Galenson, whose earlier research has changed our understanding of creativity, combines social scientific methods with qualitative analysis to produce a fundamentally new interpretation of modern art that will give readers a far deeper appreciation of the art of the past century, and of today, than is available elsewhere.

In den WarenkorbGebundene Ausgabe. Zustand: Neu. Neu neuware, importqualität, auf lager - Robert Rauschenbergs engagement with photography began in the late 1940s under the tutelage of Aaron Siskind and Hazel Larsen Archer at Black Mountain College in North Carolina. Their combined influence was so great that for a time Rauschenberg was unsure whether to pursue painting or photography as a career. Instead he chose both. This volume gathers and surveys Rauschenbergs numerous uses of photography for the first time. It includes portraits of friends, studio shots, photographs used in the Combines series, silkscreens, photographs of lost works and works in progress, allowing us to re-imagine almost the entirety of the artists work in light of his always inventive uses of photography, while also supplying previously unseen glimpses into his social nexus of the 1950s and 60s.

Oktober 1925 in Port Arthur, Texas; 12. . (wiki) // INHALT : Vorwort Dieter Ruckhaberle; Biographie; Lawrence Alloway Rauschenbergs Entwicklung; Götz Adriani Robert Rauschenberg Zeichnungen, Gouachen, Collagen 1949 bis 1979; Douglas M. Davis Strong Currents; William S. Lieberman Die Illustrationen zu Dantes "Inferno"; Bilder, Combine-Paintings, Objekte; Ausstellungsverzeichnis / List of Works. // . .
