A certified Royal Air Force 'air ace', Dahl was a friend and wartime colleague of Ian Fleming, and would often meet in New York with Fleming and mutual pal, the Old Etonian Ivar Bryce, (who was, at the time, Britain's only member the OSS). Following the war Dahl worked on the official government report of the BSC network's activities, and remained friends with 'real James Bond' Sir William Stephenson, Bryce and Fleming. His first children's book was The Gremlins, and by the sixties he was one of the world's bestselling authors. His most famous book 'Charlie and The Chocolate Factory' was published in 1964, followed by numerous classics including Fantastic Mr. Fox (1970), The BFG (1982) and Matilda (1988), all of which were successfully filmed. Dahl was asked by EON Productions to adapt Ian Fleming's original novel 'You Only Live Twice' for the big budget 1967 movie, and, following the success of this venture, he was hired by 'Cubby' Broccoli for his next Fleming screen adventure 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' (1968). First edition, first printing, preceding the UK edition by two years. Dahl originally began working on The Magic Finger in 1962, under the title of The Almost Ducks. In the story, an eight-year-old girl, who hates to see animals killed for fun, develops a special power, similar to that of Matilda. The book was part of a project in which a group of writers were asked to create a story for children with a limited vocabulary. Dahl, who was very much against animal cruelty, wrote this anti-hunting story against "all the brave deer hunters and duck hunters in the country". However, Macmillan, who had originally commissioned the story, refused it. Then Knopf, Dahl's regular US publishers, also turned it down. Both, it has been suggested, were wary of repercussions from the US gun lobby. Harper & Row was a new publishing firm for Dahl and they responded with an attractively produced book. The jacket is from the trade issue, with the bottom corner clipped and the top corner unclipped showing the price of $2.50.
